I'd return to Strasbourg for that dessert. Back to the night before: both our hosts and we were transported by the Mont Blanc, a chestnut and cassis dessert that was unique in both appearance and flavor. Don't miss it. Our hosts, both French born, said they'd never tasted such a delicious version of that dessert, and that the addition of cassis was unique and genius of this pâtissier. Also, for what it's worth, the elegant woman in the shop was lovely. In short, for the best French pastry in Strasbourg, don't bother going elsewhere.

After browsing the Christmas markets around the cathedral, we doubled back to sample their wares. At the back of the chocolate shop, there is a winding staircase to the dining room. It's charming and small, and a pastry display case is in the center. We weren't sure of the ordering procedures up here -- one of the staff motioned to me to go over to the pastry case -- I wasn't sure if it was self-serve or not -- but I sat back down and waited. I requested a holiday spice tea -- they said they were out -- and the rest of our party ordered hot chocolate. It was rich and thick and served in mugs (like cacao bean), and although good, some expressed that it wasn't the best they'd had. I was served a rich chocolate pastry and tea. The warm and cozy ambiance is the best part. Purchase chocolates in the shop downstairs before you leave.
