One can live the Avocado Festival vicariously through just this one photo.

You know how you get disappointed when you think you've hit the jackpot of ripened avocados only to realize that the avocado you selected has an unruly enlarged pit and is slightly already rotten on the inside? That's the feeling I felt driving away from Sunday's Avocado Festival. Let me get this shock out of the way before proceeding my review: I don't like avocados. No, I wasn't dropped as a child. Yes, I've tried them already and still don't care for them. And no, I don't even like guacamole (which is essentially just smashed avocado). However, with six months of marriage under my belt, I've learned quickly that the key to a happy husband is a.) compromise and b.) a revolving door of avocados always in our pantry. Avocado Festival or Bust! My parents read about the Annual Fallbrook Avocado Festival in the AAA Westways Magazine and brought it to my attention (knowing how much my husband obsesses over these green grenades). After pitching the idea to the hubs, we decided to take our participation one step further and turned the festival into a staycation weekend by booking a hotel down in the area and inviting the catalysts themselves to join in the fun. Since the festival was only scheduled for one day, we booked a hotel for Saturday night in Rancho Bernardo to take advantage of visiting that area before hitting the road 30 minutes North to Fallbrook on Sunday to get our 'cado on. Conveniently, the festival provides free parking and shuttle rides to / from some local schools to avoid having to deal with finding parking in the midst of street closures, etc. The process from the school onto the shuttle and to the festival was easy, but that's where the excitement ends. What does one expect to find at an avocado festival? Avocados. Apparently the avocado shortage is no joke because that is what we witnessed on Sunday. With the exception of two vendor booths selling guacamole slumped onto a nacho bowl of tortilla chips and avocados on the t-shirts of the sponsors, avocados were absolutely NO WHERE to be found. I felt bad for my husband who expected a swimming pool of avocado ice cream, a green smoothie, avocado dressings, or honestly just anything unique related to avocados. We would have had more luck finding avocados rotten in the lockers of the schools the shuttles ran from. What did we find? A street fair with the longest length of repeat vendors in Southern California. Thankfully the weather was beautiful and the people watching opportunities were endless but everything else about our visit fell...unripened. Food vendors were typical overpriced fair food prices and the entertainment main stage was so incredibly small. We sat and watched a band play during lunch which was enjoyable but the follow-up Bluegrass band could barely be heard. There was a ton of people there visiting the festival and I didn't see too many security patrol outside of those checking ID's in the beer garden by the main stage. For the amount of people walking the streets, I found this to be extremely unsafe. The line to take the shuttles back to the schools' parking lots was absolutely chaos. No one knew which bus headed back to where so even my husband had to step up to take control of the line and direct traffic accordingly. We are still waiting for that paycheck... Was it worth the trip? Any family time is worth the ride. But will we be back next year? Guaca-NO-le!

This was my first time since living in Fallbrook that I've been to the Avocado Festival. They had quite a few blocks closed. They had a live band playing. A variety of vendors. My favorite was the mommas boy cookies. They are veteran owned and they have this coconut oatmeal chocolate chip cookie that no one else has. I buy it everywhere I see them. Fun little festival.

This Avocado Festival has grown into a street fair sorry to say. Located in downtown Fallbrook it stretches about a mile now. If you get there by 8 am you may find curb parking. Later than that and you pay $10 to park....lots of that. Also sorry to say not more than four street vendors really had anything to do with avocados. A guac stand (2) and an avocado gelato...I'm rounding up. There were lots of cheap jewellery and moo moos for women. What surprised me was all the construction, insurance and what not vendors. There were more stores with avocado themed merchandise than the festival....no kidding. If you you were hungry then this was the place for you. At every street intersection was food booths ...bbq lots of it. Tacos, sausage, brats and street corn. Kettle corn to of course. They were selling avocados for a buck, I get them at Ralph's for 79 cents. Tip....come early say by 9am because by noon you could hardly walk around....lots of people. I hope next year they downsize and have more avocado themed foods and products.

Probably one of the biggest street fairs without admission fee that I've been to, and parking was only $5! The street parking was all full by the time we got there so free parking was not an option. It's a big fair, and you'd be very happy if you like fairs and don't care for avocados, because if you do, like me, you'll just end up with disappointment. We walked for 3-4 blocks without a sight of an avocado... And finally when we saw one, it was hass avocados at a produce stand, which you see plenty at a Von's or Sprouts... I was really hoping to see different varieties of avocados! We also tried the famous deep fried avocados. Although they don't sound appealing to begin with, we still gave it a shot. Meh. Don't bother. We didn't even finish the tray! The best thing that happened there was my purchase of some dresses made in India/Nepal as I love the unique designs. This fair was great about having a lot of everything but very little avocado or avocado related products.

There were way too many people to attend this one day event. Ridiculous crowds!

If I could give this a negative 5 stars, that's what I would give it. This should NOT have been called an Avocado festival when it was nothing more than a VERY LARGE flea market. We did not see one avocado vendor or anybody selling anything to do with avocados. It was a complete waste of time and energy. The food might have been good if we could've ever gotten to the front of the line to actually try it. There were too many merchandise vendors and too little food and beverage vendors. We drove two hours to get to this event and needles to say we will never be back again. The avocado festival in Carpinteria California definitely knows how to put an avocado festival together. They actually have avocados there. To the city of Fallbrook or whoever put this event on, you might want to look into how Carpinteria does it so you know how to make it better in the future.

My cousin has the most fabulous bacon avocado tree. But it only produces every other year. This year wasn't one of them. So, why not go to an avocado festival? (Okay, I was bribed with the additional bonus of lunch & slots at Pechanga & shopping at Tom's Farms. Incentive was needed to get me up at 5:30 in the morning and drive all the way down there.) This was a big festival. Booths lined Main Street for blocks and blocks. Food and farmers market booths were on some side streets. We were there too early to experience any live music. I'd really rather think of this as a city street fest, rather than say that avocados were the main focus. A lot of local businesses and other groups were interspersed between the many craft booths. Tip: check out the various booths selling the $5 bags of avocados before you buy. We found this one booth that offered a variety of good-sized avos in each bag. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/BGp9lHK4ecL9ByyA0N6vEA?select=6ADpymWZCiEPwTTa_GiwMQ Found a vendor selling proteus flowers and couldn't resist buying three lovely stems. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/BGp9lHK4ecL9ByyA0N6vEA?select=H6WLgX5aafWlHhdsGSPZ1g http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/BGp9lHK4ecL9ByyA0N6vEA?select=TbmK5wtqU_J3b62errARyg The hubby wandered through the classic car show. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/BGp9lHK4ecL9ByyA0N6vEA?select=4JU0dKaSBOjZsRvsPXxlkQ http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/BGp9lHK4ecL9ByyA0N6vEA?select=BBTpayuVQNrjac8nEHltuA Spent some time watching the dog obedience demonstration and felt bad that we're such failures. LOL Got some pretty good stuff though, really. A grocery tote, eyeglass cleaner, pens, chip clip, keychain, can cooler, useful pest & health info, hand sanitizer, etc. Friendly atmosphere. But, go early! By the time we left around 10:30, it was already getting crowded!

Okay, so I'm sort of new in San Diego. I had heard of Fallbrook but had no idea where it was. I see an "Avocado Festival" on social media, and thought what the hell? Sort of misleading I might say. The title should have been "Giant Street Fair". We walked for blocks without seeing ANYTHING avocado. I was getting a little perturbed, as I can check out a street fair anytime without driving 40 miles. Finally I spotted some people walking around with guacamole and chips and I (almost tackled) asked them where the got it. They pointed me to the holy guacamole booth. (Same guys at every Farmers Market) I grabbed a $6 boat of chips and guac and headed on my way to find some avocados. I finally arrived at a couple of booths that had produce and lot's of avocados. I was so bummed because I wanted avocado chips, avocado oil, etc. All I could find was few fresh produce booths, and couple olive oil booths. The rest of the blocks were filled with trinket booths. Kinda weird to call this an avocado festival. Especially since I was standing in the Avocado Mecca of the universe, Fallbrook.

A festival, yes. A street fair yes. Not really sure what it had to do with Avocados. Really disappointed.

The festival was moved to the Vista Antique Gas & Steam Engine museum and it has been a great venue for this two day event held late September. And the amount of people that we know that go here is growing. We meet up with several who also attend this event annually. And recognize lots of other regulars. I literally cannot wait to get the Swedish meatball dinner! It comes with smashed potatoes and lingonberries. Seriously it's the best combo. To drink is to have a drink of the times a cider or particularly a Mead! So many great and local vendors for that! This visit I got to try a free Viking Berry Monster drink. I don't usually drink these but it was actually a pretty nice treat & I liked it. This time around we came prepared with enough cash and credit...and had given ourselves a budget in order to get the drinks, food and just enough to get merch items that we wanted. I finally created a combo oil blend that I had gotten at a Renaissance faire, in No Cali, way back in the 90's! The oil is put into a vile of your choosing. So I picked a small one that doubled as a necklace. Definitely created nostalgia in a mini bottle! So much going on this year! It's a two day event and some stay and attend the entire weekend. Or they just come back the next day. If you like this sort of outing you should go!!!
