We stayed for four nights in late May at the Hot Springs, SD KOA…read more We have visited the Black Hills several times over the years and wanted a quieter experience than is offered at Palmer Gulch or Rafter J. This KOA at Hot Springs definitely fit the bill! A beautiful little KOA right off Highway 79 close to downtown Hot Springs. We used this KOA as a base of operations for exploring the Black Hills / Custer / Rushmore area in addition to Badlands National Park and of course, Wall Drug! Although not as close to Rushmore as Hill City, the drive through Custer State Park is absolutely amazing! Our site was a FHU pull-through patio #51. This is a great site as it's on the end with lots of room on the camp side. Very long with ample room for tow vehicles / toads. As we travel with two juvenile labrador retrievers (LOL) getting them exercise was not a problem. Their dual area fenced Kamp K9 was a great place to let them let off steam. A lush grassy enclosure! There is also a leashed pet walk area at the back of the campground to walk the pups . Pine trees are everywhere and it created a nice shaded atmosphere. Interior roads are dirt and sites are gravel, but dust was no problem. Our patio site seemed fairly new and had lots of room with table, chairs, fire ring and gas grill. There was also lots of space to set up our outdoor dog pen. Perhaps it was the time of year, but everything in the area was very green and beautiful. We did have haze from the Canadian fires one night, but it was not a problem. Staff was very helpful and offered tips on the surrounding areas. Camp store was smaller, but had a good variety of items. Pool was not open for the season yet, but it looked nice!

It felt like a nice hotel where they could deliver ice, food, wood... Loved the cool and refreshing pool. Clean and easy laundry facilities. We needed $15 dollars in quarters for lots of laundry and there was no problem. They recycle! So many do not. They even took our recycling from our previous travel. The camp store had what we needed. The location was great for us. I generally do not post reviews but the management was so great that I wanted to post.

Restrooms and roomy showers were clean. We had a 25' TT and site accommodated our tow vehicle. We had 2 sites a back in (3 nights) and pull thru (2 nights). Beautiful hiking trail behind campground. We had a fire ring and location is somewhat hilly so difficult for handicap to get around. All in all a great location and easy to find. Nice general store on site. Definitely have to get some homemade pie from the Purple Pie House, blueberry, apple and bumbleberry were delicious warmed ip with a scoop of Vanilla ice cream! The Claw Antler & Hide store had very unique and cool items bought antler whistles for the grandkids. Had the best buffalo burger at Black Hills Burger and Bun but go early its very popular! We had seen a few places along our travels and a lot listed in the tourist guide. We chose Country Charm Cabins and Corrals based on the advice of John and Ann (proprietors at The Shady Rest Motel). This was a great decision. Owen and Lois (I hope I am remembering their names correctly) are awesome. They have owned this location for 12 years. Lois is a riding instructor. Upon calling and making reservations I was asked about our skill level and told exactly what to wear and what to bring. The ride time is 2 hours. Riders ride their own horses. My son who is 6 was on his own horse with a lead. We are inexperienced riders so we were given instruction on how to handle our horses. Each rider is given a bag to take with them for water and a camera. Helmets are required for children. My husband and I wore one as well. The trail takes riders on a lovely tour of some flat grassy areas and some hilly areas. Lois is fantastic about explaining plants, trees, history, etc. along the way as well as explaining the correct way to handle the horses. The only thing I wish I would have known is they do not accept credit cards. We had some cash on us but not enough for the 3 of us. We were willing to give them all the cash we had and stop by with the rest the next day. They offered to let us mail it. We loved this ride. My son loved when we were able to trot.

The size was great, the location was easy to find, GPS lead me straight there and there was plenty of signage to make sure I was going to the right spot. The cabin itself was very clean and well stocked with towels, blankets, and pillows. I found the bed very comfortable. We had an issue with the fire alarms, however it was resolved by the owners promptly. The cabin was like one cabin split in 2, so we had the front half and had some neighbors on the back half. It felt very separated though and we never even saw our neighbors. The price was cheap for what you get. They had tons of dishes ready to use and even had some gallons of water ready to go in the fridge. The WiFi was great, lost the tv signal for a bit while it was storming but that is expected. I was impressed and I'd rent this place again in the future if I'm ever in the area again!

First, the hospitality and management are down to earth. Very friendly and were able to answer all our questions. They have a small store with some basics.. mustard, ketchup, and beer to name a few items. Very friendly. Second, the campsite was very reasonable considering full hookups and pull through. The campsites do share water, meaning one main water faucet that is split between two campsites. The pressure isn't a problem at all. Our problem was that my camper's water was on the front left of the camper. Given the sharing, my original 20 or so foot water hose couldn't reach. Our fault for not having an extension, but we ended up having to park the other way with the camper to hook up the water. Bottom line: we are newbie campers, so just make sure you have an extension. Lesson learned. They do have a cool little lake/pond that offers fishing and swimming as well as boat rentals. Water is clear and they have it sectioned off to prevent swimming too deep. Finally, you are within 5 or so minutes of Cold Brook Reservoir, an Army Corp of Engineers recreation area. They have a super nice beach, and facilities there. You are also within minutes of the cool little town of Hot Springs. If you are looking for a cool and out of the way campground with all the amenities, check this place out!
