Trying to order online from retailers is cost prohibitive without being able to really see the items first. Visiting Mountain Gems made my trip entirely worth it. I got some great deals on beautiful material and spent over an hour talking rocks with two great guys. They have a good selection of cabochons and faceted gems in really cool carousel display cases. I saw some things I've only ever seen online and learned about some material from BC. Unfortunately, I'm not an experienced enough metalsmith to justify buying some of the cabs I really wanted, but it's definitely on my list when I visit in the future. As an amateur lapidarist, I was ecstatic to look through their shelf of slabs. I bought probably an unhealthy amount, but hey, I need to transport it across the Pacific Ocean. I might as well make it worth it. They walked me through some of the things I picked out and showed me some things I missed that I ended up loving too. Plus they wrapped everything neatly because it was going to be travelling. The staff was incredibly helpful and knowledgable. Guys, if you're reading this, sorry, I completely forgot to get your names. I really appreciated the time you took to talk about everything I was interested in seeing and giving me pointers and ideas on the slabs I bought. On the manufacturer's website, it showed that this Coast Goods store sold the products, so I decided to check it out IRL (as opposed to purchasing it blind on the web). This shop is quite small, right on Victoria Dr at the corner of Charles. There are lots of trees on both sides of the street and the area is very residential. Even with GPS, I drove right past the shop initially without seeing it (the canopy of trees obstructed the shop sign and street sign for Charles). FYI. (Granted, I'm not familiar with this particular area). Once you know where the shop is, there are ample free parking spots on Victoria proper. The store interior is small but jam-packed with incredibly well-curated items. I really like that all (or the vast majority) are Canadian-made, and many, artisanal. From jewelry to greeting cards to candles to pottery and dinnerware, from textiles and cocktail napkins to organic cleaning supplies... you'd be hard-pressed not to find something perfect here, for yourself or a gift for others. I like how they carried local artists' works but also a few other well-known companies' works (i.e., Jenny Bird jewelry, for example). The two women who worked here when I visited couldn't have been nicer. Silk tanks by Graham and Spencer are a bit pricey ($300 and over), but the Cheap Denim jeans are not too heavy on the wallet. I picked up a gift for my niece or nephew. The salesperson was very helpful when I mentioned I was looking for a gift. From the website I learned this is a Native - owned shop opened in 1987. In fact the owner is a relative of Chief Wickaninnish! They also work with artists and are able to assist customers with ordering custom made items. I also thought this was an interesting tidbit: "The Wickaninnish Gallery is named after a powerful First Nations chief, Chief Wickaninnish of the Tla-o-qui-aht People from Clayoquot Sound on Vancouver Island. The name Wickaninnish translates to "having no one in front of him in the canoe". During the time of European contact, Chief Wickaninnish was a highly revered leader and was very influential in the fur trade." There is no shortage of NW Coast art in Vancouver, but this little gallery is affordable, Native - owned, and carries some nice pieces. May you have no one in front of you in the canoe!
