I wouldn't usually be reviewing a butcher shop, but this one deserves a special mention!…read more As soon as you walk in you will notice something different about this place. Hats off to the guy who works here, who is dressed up to the nines in traditional butcher's costume - stripey red and white cap included. It's almost like walking into one of those trad candy stores... it's quite a special experience being served by someone who cares so much about his profession that he dresses up every day! Then you have the store itself.. it's like stepping back into the 70s... brownish tiles and very retro interior which probably hasn't been modernised since it was built. Very cool indeed. And then when you go to pay, the butcher has a special accounting room he goes into to collect your change. With all this old world charm how could you possibly do your meat shopping at a clinical supermarket?!?

You have to ask for their 'original' sausage. Yes!, they are better that 'SuperQuinn' sausages, obviously in my opinion but also several family and friends would agree. I really have to start paying attention, earlier this week I reviewed 2 craft butchers in Newport…read more(Co. Mayo) and said something like "you dont find this sort of thing in Dublin". I then come home, wander through my local town Sandymount and see roght in front of me michael byrne craft butcher - I go in all the time, I've just never thought of it as noteworthy, but it is! Aside from the usual selection of meats they have something very special indeed - a fresh fish counter - surprisingly rare in the area and odd considering we are right beside the sea, anyway, the fish is always very fresh but a little expensive - actually thats probably a fair comment overall... but worth it for the odd treat or when you are feeling flush!

It was last Sunday, the folks called, 'Annie we are on our way we decided to surprise you for Sunday dinner.' Which translates as, 'Annie we are on our way to snoop around your apartment and to see if you care enough to cook us Sunday dinner.' I woke with my pillow stuck to my hungover face when the text woke me. Stuffing the party paraphernalia of the night before in the washing machine in haze whilst sleeping bodies twitched at my feet. Once the clean up was done, the dinner panic ensued, this butchers signage welcomed me in. Once the butchers stopped laughing at me, they picked out the best cut of meat to cut in a hurry, they even told me the best temperature to put it at. Best of all they are cheap, I'm all about the cheap. The result was the folks loved it and believe that I am a well adjusted adult.

In addition to stocking the usual items you'd expect to find in a butcher, Morans has a decent range of veges and sauces to complement your meat purchases. If you're not sure what you're after, they recommend you a cut based on your requirements. The meat is always good quality, if you ask them to vacuum pack it it'll last for 5 days and it's better value than supermarkets. As well as standard meats, they do a range of marinaded stuff, some ready meals and side dishes you just need to put in the oven. The best thing about the place is the fridge they mature their steaks in - an absolutely fantastic sight for a carnivore. I'd recommend a t-bone or a cote de boeuf.
