A Steak & Cheese was suddenly fair game upon making our way to the till and I also ordered an extra far out selection in the form of the Pork Belly & Apple Sauce pie. It was interesting securing a spot outside where all the tables are located though be prepared for crumbs galore since parties are constantly rotating through. Super flakey pie crusts are to be had. The pork belly with apple sauce sweet and savory combo worked surprisingly well. The candied pork belly on top was a neat added bonus. These were sensible, comforting pies, in my humble opinion, though its renown probably diminished by its fast-paced touristy vibe which, I imagine, could affect consistency and quality at times. A couple of our hosts recommended this place, and since Fairlie is a small town when we traveled from Twizel to Hanmer Springs! We arrived around 2 pm and found about 20 people in line, but it moved quickly thanks to the efficient staff. We ordered the beef moussaka pie (ground beef with eggplant and cheese) for $9. The pastry crust was very flaky, though the filling-to-crust ratio felt a bit light. Still, it was tasty and worth trying. We also got the smoked chicken and mushroom pie, which we both preferred--the smoked chicken had great flavor and was overall more satisfying. I was charged for a cup of water, even when I provided my own cup. There's free parking, they accept credit cards, and they offer a selection of desserts as well. Came here pretty early in the morning early summer and there was no line and lots of seats available. My partner and I ordered one each to eat there and the box of 6 random frozen pies for NZ $40. I enjoyed the seafood paua (Maori for sea snails) that I ordered. The frozen box came with a mix of chicken, mince, and breakfast options which we ate over the next two days. Fairlie looked like the best option (Geraldine was the other nearest town) as their bakery is famous for their meat pies. We dropped in on a late Monday morning (around 11:00 am). The menu is small; basically pies, sandwiches, bread and pastries (muffins, scones, cakes and donuts). Of course, there's coffee (using Caffe Prima beans). - Flat white ($4.50 NZD large) - B liked it. Comes with cute coffee artwork. - Apple ginger muffin ($4.00 NZD) - it's huge! Muffin was filled with real apples in the middle and wasn't too sweet. Had a hint of ginger flavour in the background. Get one. - Pork belly & applesauce ($6.50 NZD) - this was boooooomb. Filling is pure pork belly. Absolutely no filler. The pork crackling on top adds a crunchy element and the bits of applesauce was icing on the cake. The flakiness of the crust had us swooning. BEST meat pie during our trip, hands down. Nothing comes even close. - Bacon & salmon pie ($7.00 NZD) - the first pie was so good that we got a second for the road. We ate it a few hours later so it wasn't hot but it still hit the spot. Again, generous portion of salmon. A must stop if you're driving through Fairlie. Being from the US, I don't have much experience eating meat pies and wanted to try a good one (we had one at a random cafe, and it wasn't that good). This is a popular spot, and lines can be long. However, it moved pretty fast. We ordered a creamy chicken pie as well as a meat and cheese pie. I'd recommend the latter over the former - while the chicken was tasty, in my opinion it was quite one-noted in flavor. It's similar to a chicken pot pie, but without the vegetables or different types of seasoning that you'd find in one. The meat and cheese was better. I found the filling quite substantial, and it went well with the crust. I would have loved it if the pies came with some veggies on the side in order to cut the richness a bit. Despite this, I still really enjoyed the meal. If I ever came back, I'd try ordering something a bit more interesting (they had pork belly & applesauce, chicken and salmon, etc). The Pork Belly + Applesauce Pie was filled with tender slices of pork and creamy applesauce; A very nice combination. Next was my favorite: the Mince + Cheese Pie. This pie was filled with rich seasoned ground beef mixed with gooey cheese. The pastry nicely soaked up all the juices. Finally, the Bacon + Salmon Pie was full of flakey fish and bits of meaty bacon with a hint of creaminess. I did not know pastries filled with meat could be this good! We've had chicken pot pies (USA) and char sui baos (China), and this was something totally amazing! Not to compare the other two to this but we've wondered why it wasn't popular in the US. During our holiday in NZ, I'd heard of Fairlie meat pies. After a bit of traveling we found the small town and the Bakehouse. Wow! I've tried a variety of pies in other places like Sydney and Victoria, Canada and no one compares to Fairlie! I had the mince while my wife tried a venison n cranberry pie. Both were great with light, flaky crusts, flavorful and well seasoned fillings all served piping hot! I tried the mince since it's a pretty straightforward item but the way Fairlie cooks the mince produces a meaty filling in a smooth sauce. Magical! It's a bit of a trip to find but has the best pies in NZ n possibly the world. I kid u not... The venison n cranberries was also very good. So good that my wife only let me have the tiniest of bites! Oh my goodness this was the best pie I have ever had!!! We were recommended to stop here by some locals we meet at Lake Wanaka. We had planned to stop at Lake Tekapo for lunch on our drive from Wanaka to Christchurch but the bakery there had sold out of most pies so we decided to have a quick coffee and stop here instead. So very glad we did. I had to be the decision maker on what to get as our son was asleep in the car- as soon as I saw the pork belly pie I knew it was just what my husband would want- pork belly with Apple Sauce with cracking in the pastry top it was Amazing!! I almost didn't post a review of this place in fear of making it more popular. You wouldn't think a small town in the middle of nowhere makes the best pies in NZ, but it does. My family regularly travels from Christchurch to Wanaka and our trips are carefully timed to coincide with the Fairlie bakery opening hours. Its pretty much a revolt if we arrive and its not open for one simple reason - the pies are beyond amazing. My personal favourite is the salmon and bacon, we are talking huge chunks of fresh salmon and massive amount of bacon combined with a light and fluffy pie pastry. My dad swears by the pork crackling pie. Even the mince and cheese pie (sounds pretty pedestrian right?) blew me away with its intense meaty flavour and chunkiness of the filling. Its like they put liquid heroin in here or something. So yeah, this place is a must stop for the pies alone, although I also hear rave reviews of the sweat treats which do look very good in the cabinet. The line always looks long here but service is quick. There are a couple of tables indoors and out if you want to sit down. Bottom line: stop for pies. You won't regret it. read more
