It's a popular road trip stop with mostly foreigners who are guaranteed to generate a constant queue, one that moves swiftly making a visit an easy enough venture. Pies are a tick below 10 NZD, the menu constantly shifting during our visit around 1PM since they were freshly baking and selling out of pies constantly as the line moved. A Steak & Cheese was suddenly fair game upon making our way to the till and I also ordered an extra far out selection in the form of the Pork Belly & Apple Sauce pie. It was interesting securing a spot outside where all the tables are located though be prepared for crumbs galore since parties are constantly rotating through. Super flakey pie crusts are to be had. The pork belly with apple sauce sweet and savory combo worked surprisingly well. The candied pork belly on top was a neat added bonus. These were sensible, comforting pies, in my humble opinion, though its renown probably diminished by its fast-paced touristy vibe which, I imagine, could affect consistency and quality at times. Our pies were one of great enjoyment though! read more

18 months ago Fairlie Bakehouse was top of the tree. Best in class best in show pies. Meat pies Not now. That was then. This is now. Today visit earns a solid 2 star review. Edible. Bad soggy underdone pastry. Taste free cheese un melted. Pie not served hot. Meat chunks unremarkable nor many. Ten bucks tiny pie didn't impress in value / quality. International staff still delightful. Busker Ken Irish music out front the best of the best day we've enjoyed in a long time read more

I've heard a lot of recommendations that this is the best meat pie in New Zealand, and after visiting, I can definitely see the argument. The store was extremely busy, but everything moved quickly. The meat pies were flaky on the outside, but rich on the inside. The meat wasn't dry, and the seasoning was wonderful. A must-visit! read more

A couple of our hosts recommended this place, and since Fairlie is a small town when we traveled from Twizel to Hanmer Springs! We arrived around 2 pm and found about 20 people in line, but it moved quickly thanks to the efficient staff. We ordered the beef moussaka pie (ground beef with eggplant and cheese) for $9. The pastry crust was very flaky, though the filling-to-crust ratio felt a bit light. Still, it was tasty and worth trying. We also got the smoked chicken and mushroom pie, which we both preferred--the smoked chicken had great flavor and was overall more satisfying. I was charged for a cup of water, even when I provided my own cup. There's free parking, they accept credit cards, and they offer a selection of desserts as well. Overall, a nice spot to stop by if you're in the area. read more

Came here pretty early in the morning early summer and there was no line and lots of seats available. My partner and I ordered one each to eat there and the box of 6 random frozen pies for NZ $40. I enjoyed the seafood paua (Maori for sea snails) that I ordered. The frozen box came with a mix of chicken, mince, and breakfast options which we ate over the next two days. Overall, this was one of the better meat pies I've had over 3 weeks in New Zealand. The pastry is nice and flakey while the filling was nicely seasoned. read more

I think I stopped into 4-5 bakeshops to try New Zealand meat pies.....and Hands down the best pie and baked goods on the South Island PERIOD!!!! Everything about these pies is perfection: The crust, fillings, bake, balance etc. All the other items were great too. Sure there is always a line from local and tourists alike. Sure it is fair away from most towns. But if you want to taste the best...this is the place. read more

Great stop on our road trip from Lake Tekapo to Christchurch. This bakery is known for their delicious and unique variety of fresh hot pies, but they also offer coffees, sandwiches, and sweet pastries. My husband and I shared 3 pies - the salmon & bacon, pork belly & apple sauce, and the goat curry. All of them were incredible. The crust was just the right buttery and crispy texture, and the fillings were so juicy and generous. My husband (a self-proclaimed meat pie lover) said these were some of the best pies he's ever had. Absolutely recommend! read more

A 5 star experience at the Fairlie Bakehouse! We drove about 39 minutes from Lake Tekapo to try their pies and baked goods and were not disappointed. Both the steak & cheese and the mince & cheese were delicious, with the crust being the flakiest we've had yet. The cronut was a great way to finish the meal- topped with what seemed to be an apple compote and filled with a fresh custard. Definitely worth stopping at! read more

Tried their vegan Mince and Cheese pie and understood why it won an award. After Fairlie we didn't want to eat minced pies elsewhere.

On a long drive from Methvan to the isolated Mt. Cook, I researched where to pit-stop for hot pies and discovered Fairlie Bakehouse. A popular eatery, the line was quite long, but moved quickly, with a variety of unique pie flavors, sweet baked goods, and takeaway coffees. We ordered a salmon & bacon and pork & applesauce takeaway ($7each) Compared to some other takeaway pies, I wasn't overly impressed by the pies. The outside crusts were perfectly buttery and flaky, but the insides were a bit dry needing more sauce (&pop). They were well stuffed, but I wouldn't overly recommend as a 'must-stop', more of a 'if you're hungry'. read more

On our drive from Lake Tekapo to Christchurch, we were looking for a quick place to stop. Fairlie looked like the best option (Geraldine was the other nearest town) as their bakery is famous for their meat pies. We dropped in on a late Monday morning (around 11:00 am). It was busy the whole time we were there. Lots of seating both inside and outside. Service is fast, friendly and they bring your drinks to your table. The menu is small; basically pies, sandwiches, bread and pastries (muffins, scones, cakes and donuts). Of course, there's coffee (using Caffe Prima beans). - Flat white ($4.50 NZD large) - B liked it. Comes with cute coffee artwork. - Apple ginger muffin ($4.00 NZD) - it's huge! Muffin was filled with real apples in the middle and wasn't too sweet. Had a hint of ginger flavour in the background. Get one. - Pork belly & applesauce ($6.50 NZD) - this was boooooomb. Filling is pure pork belly. Absolutely no filler. The pork crackling on top adds a crunchy element and the bits of applesauce was icing on the cake. The flakiness of the crust had us swooning. BEST meat pie during our trip, hands down. Nothing comes even close. - Bacon & salmon pie ($7.00 NZD) - the first pie was so good that we got a second for the road. We ate it a few hours later so it wasn't hot but it still hit the spot. Again, generous portion of salmon. A must stop if you're driving through Fairlie. BEST pies we had during our month long New Zealand trip. read more

Before a recent trip to New Zealand, I heard that Fairlie Bakehouse was the spot for the best meat pies in the country. I haven't tried many meat pies but DAMN! These were phenomenal! My wife and I stopped in for breakfast while traveling from Lake Tekapo to Christchurch. We ordered three pies and each one was perfectly flakey. The Pork Belly + Applesauce Pie was filled with tender slices of pork and creamy applesauce; A very nice combination. Next was my favorite: the Mince + Cheese Pie. This pie was filled with rich seasoned ground beef mixed with gooey cheese. The pastry nicely soaked up all the juices. Finally, the Bacon + Salmon Pie was full of flakey fish and bits of meaty bacon with a hint of creaminess. I did not know pastries filled with meat could be this good! Do yourself a favor and visit this house of deliciousness. read more

We stopped by on the way to Christchurch from Twizel, and the bit of research we did told us that this was the best place to try meat pies. Being from the US, I don't have much experience eating meat pies and wanted to try a good one (we had one at a random cafe, and it wasn't that good). This is a popular spot, and lines can be long. However, it moved pretty fast. We ordered a creamy chicken pie as well as a meat and cheese pie. I'd recommend the latter over the former - while the chicken was tasty, in my opinion it was quite one-noted in flavor. It's similar to a chicken pot pie, but without the vegetables or different types of seasoning that you'd find in one. The meat and cheese was better. I found the filling quite substantial, and it went well with the crust. I would have loved it if the pies came with some veggies on the side in order to cut the richness a bit. Despite this, I still really enjoyed the meal. If I ever came back, I'd try ordering something a bit more interesting (they had pork belly & applesauce, chicken and salmon, etc). It's a good stop for lunch and a stretch of the legs, especially if you've been driving for a while. read more

We were recommended to try this bakery by our Airbnb hosts. My husband was blown away by their meat pies. We've had chicken pot pies (USA) and char sui baos (China), and this was something totally amazing! Not to compare the other two to this but we've wondered why it wasn't popular in the US. We ordered the vension and cranberry and the salmon and bacon. They were delicious and so flakey. You can hold the pies and eat them. We're still thinking about them a year later. Found some from Trader Joe's but it's not the same. Can't wait to go back in Feb 2020! read more

During our holiday in NZ, I'd heard of Fairlie meat pies. After a bit of traveling we found the small town and the Bakehouse. Wow! I've tried a variety of pies in other places like Sydney and Victoria, Canada and no one compares to Fairlie! I had the mince while my wife tried a venison n cranberry pie. Both were great with light, flaky crusts, flavorful and well seasoned fillings all served piping hot! I tried the mince since it's a pretty straightforward item but the way Fairlie cooks the mince produces a meaty filling in a smooth sauce. Magical! It's a bit of a trip to find but has the best pies in NZ n possibly the world. I kid u not... The venison n cranberries was also very good. So good that my wife only let me have the tiniest of bites! Ha! What I did have had a great meaty, but not gamy, taste balanced by the sweetness of the cranberries. Wow! read more

Touted as one of the best pies in NZ, had to stop by and see what the fuss was about. The lines were long and had great anticipation. Got the steak and cheese and pork belly pies. No tomato sauce available for purchase. How do you run out of tomato sauce at a pie shop??? The pork belly pie was dry, crackling was good but it was a little bland if I'm honest. The steak and cheese pie was good but wasn't anything special. Ok to drop by if you're in the neighbourhood but nothing to write home about. read more

Oh my goodness this was the best pie I have ever had!!! We were recommended to stop here by some locals we meet at Lake Wanaka. We had planned to stop at Lake Tekapo for lunch on our drive from Wanaka to Christchurch but the bakery there had sold out of most pies so we decided to have a quick coffee and stop here instead. So very glad we did. I had to be the decision maker on what to get as our son was asleep in the car- as soon as I saw the pork belly pie I knew it was just what my husband would want- pork belly with Apple Sauce with cracking in the pastry top it was Amazing!! I had the smoked chicken and mushroom pie while it was amazing I wish I would have also bought a silverside and potato pie. Salmon and bacon are also on the menu and seemed to be a favourite. I would definitely stop here again if I am in New Zealand. read more

I almost didn't post a review of this place in fear of making it more popular. You wouldn't think a small town in the middle of nowhere makes the best pies in NZ, but it does. My family regularly travels from Christchurch to Wanaka and our trips are carefully timed to coincide with the Fairlie bakery opening hours. Its pretty much a revolt if we arrive and its not open for one simple reason - the pies are beyond amazing. My personal favourite is the salmon and bacon, we are talking huge chunks of fresh salmon and massive amount of bacon combined with a light and fluffy pie pastry. My dad swears by the pork crackling pie. Even the mince and cheese pie (sounds pretty pedestrian right?) blew me away with its intense meaty flavour and chunkiness of the filling. Its like they put liquid heroin in here or something. So yeah, this place is a must stop for the pies alone, although I also hear rave reviews of the sweat treats which do look very good in the cabinet. The line always looks long here but service is quick. There are a couple of tables indoors and out if you want to sit down. Bottom line: stop for pies. You won't regret it. read more
