Yeah, they're down an anchor store and that's vacant storefronts here and there but by 2022 standards Fairlane is bustling. There was a decent crowd around noon on Monday in January. I made a couple trips here recently, buying a new belt at JC Penney after my cheap Meijer bought belt broke and paying my phone bill at the T Mobile cause, well, I was just in the neighborhood. The layout is a bit confusing and the three levels kind of go back and forth between odd sub-levels but it does lend the place something of an epic, labyrinthine feel. And like any mall it's some huffing and puffing to get around but I much prefer this type of layout to the giant endless oval of Great Lakes Crossing. If I wanted to navigate a humongous paper clip I'd drive NASCAR. Fairlane has that classic Taubman feel, sharing many similarities to Lakeside, albeit with more actual business. The occasional sculpture, the glass elevator with track lighting, both shut down presumably to save money, the sunken lounge areas with large leather sectional sofas. Fairlane lost their fountain though, while I think Lakeside still has theirs? I don't know. That's for another review. The food court still has a few options but with so much good ethnic restaurants none was tempting enough for me to fork over some ducats and park my butt at a table. The giant chess set by the food court is a fun free novelty. If I'd been there with another chess player I'd definitely want to try it. On my JC Penney outing I made some small talk with a couple playing chess. It was her first time playing; she was learning on that board! And one of the queens was missing so they just had both sides play without a queen. Fortunately on my more recent visit the missing queen had re-emerged though the board sat unused. The AMC theater, done up to look like the Chinese Theater here, unfortunately closed recently. I've had issues with overly yappy moviegoers talking over the film there in the past but that's still a bummer. They did have an IMAX and I loved the architecture of the place. Word is the owners are looking for another chain to reopen the cineplex though I'm sure there would be a remodel first so it'll definitely sit unused for awhile. The giant vacant hotel at the edge of the lot looms like a white elephant, too. I think "Town Center" can be anything on the complex and not just the actual mall, right? So it would be nice if a new tenant(s) took that over. That mid century glassy modernist style of the past somehow looks extra depressing sitting there vacant. Did you know back in the day a monorail ran between there and the mall? There's malls I thought about reviewing on here but never did and they're gone or will be gone shortly. I do believe Fairlane is safe for the foreseeable future though. Put this in a time capsule to see if I'm right but I think it will actually still exist as a shopping center in 20 years. If it outlasts Great Lakes Crossing I'll be especially happy.

This visit to the GM Renaissance Center felt bittersweet. With GM moving its global headquarters to…read morethe Hudson's Detroit building, much of the RenCen is already closed for renovation. Level A - the first floor was closed, and we could only walk around Level 1, with limited access to view the cars from above. For years, this has been one of my favorite spots to bring friends when they visited Detroit. Seeing everything from vintage GM models to upcoming vehicles all in one place always felt iconic. Knowing this was likely one of the last visits before major demolition begins made it feel even more emotional. We'll truly miss this space as we've known it. The change, while disappointing at first, makes sense. The two office towers closest to the river, along with the connecting podium, are slated for demolition. The original 1970s-era design simply no longer fits modern work needs, especially with the shift toward remote and hybrid work. While it's sad to see this space go, the future plans, opening up the riverfront and creating a Navy Pier-style park and entertainment area, give hope that something even better is coming.

Phase one was completed in 1977 with additional towers added in 1981 for a total of seven! Sadly, General Motors decided to relocate its headquarters elsewhere and much of the office space is vacant. Parking is plentiful but can be a walk depending on where you park. Inside is welcoming and updated in a modern design. Very clean as well. Food court is solid! Tons of options and places to sit. Lots of stores! Nothing too high end but still some good stores to check out. Roots is my personal favorite. Benches throughout if you needed a shopping break. Spent a few hours here both shopping and eating.

Whether it's clothing, electronics, sunglasses, the food court, or even personal care products , it all sucks. The Bath & Body Works store that they have here doesn't even have soap that's not scented so much for it being a bath and body store. All the clothing here that I've seen regarding short sleeve shirts are exposing the undershirt from under the sleeves which is a terrible trend. None of the electronics stores sell electronics that I like nor the watch stores sell the watches that I like. I can't buy a Casio Edifice watch from here. I can't buy Sony Xperia smartphones from here. Also because I use Sony Xperia, none of the lame phone repair stores here want to ever fix my phone even if I am willing to pay money for them to do their jobs. They just suck and don't want to. The food court has the worst variety of restaurants I've ever seen. Regarding the sunglasses, nobody here sells Bottega Veneta sunglasses. I wish Seen Vision Care remained here. That store is 10 times better in terms of variety than the garbage Sunglass Hut. Because they have way more variety. They sell Bottega, they sell Cartier, they sell a German brand that's actually very high-end but not a lot of people know about it, it's called Cazal. They haven't even heard of Bottega Veneta sunglasses in this mall. This mall is a joke people have absolutely zero taste when they come here to shop.

I think it's dog-friendly as we saw someone with their cute pup inside shopping. The space was open and not too cluttered, which I always appreciate since I can get kind of overwhelmed in vintage/antique shops. Each area was nicely curated and it was easy to tell where each "booth" started and ended. I saw a variety of housewares, clothing, decor, etc. and had fun looking around finding some treasures. We didn't end up buying anything this time, but would definitely stop in again next time we're in the area.

I replaced them and continued to have issues. I then spent $60 on a part that did not fix it. The other part I need is another $75. I asked if they could help or replace the part (they have several in store) and was having a conversation with one of the owners who then proceeded to read and ignore my messages for days. Then asking again and I was treated awful. They refused to help at all and claimed to not have the part. I have attached the pics of my conversation. I was also told I shouldn't have used Arcade 1up support to try to fix it. I bought a microwave, an arcade, and several small items totally around $600. This business doesn't care about customers. They want your money and then don't care if you ever return. Scum of the earth business practices from scummy people. You should be ashamed. The claim that I was allowed to fully test in store is also false. A man stood there holding the power cord and extension cord and after 3 seconds of it being on started saying everything looks good. I was rushed and sold bum product. They have at least 5 other units and claim not to have the parts to replace it. What a joke. Better Business Bureau will also be contacted. Stay away and save your money.

The manager here was informative and kind. Authentic materials rooted in our wonderful past and brought to us living and filled with joy. I enjoy the colors of many of the objects but, beyond that, I really like the designs within the fabrics. The yarns and threading material used in most of the textiles is natural and durable. A testament to artistry and craft. Service here is also exceptional. Management and staff are knowledgeable abut their clothing and wares. Last but not least there are objets d'art of unqusetiinable beauty. Prices are reasonable.

This mall is laid out in a very different manner relative to other more conventional malls. It…read morelooks linear with side halls from the schematic...but it doesn't feel like it. It does not have the grand, high-ceiling, well-lit atrium most large malls would have. It's a little dim inside and feels a little dead since an alarming number of its storefronts are empty. There's also very few food options giving people less reason to spend time there. The anchors are reduced to Kohls and Penneys, and I fear for the longevity of the latter. There were very few people in the mall when I was there save a few mall walkers and a couple of people pacing on their phones. On the plus side, there is a nice children's play area outside Penneys and the large atrium at the end of the mall is a nice space, even though dark. The Easter Bunny was there and set up for kids' pictures, so there was still some evidence of at least minimal vitality. And some of the shops still open were favorites such as Penney's, Kohl's, Spencer's, Lids and Victoria's Secret. It is my theory that about 20 - 25% or so of the existing large 60s-70s-80s era malls will survive over the next few years because that wil be all that the market will support. That trend, of course, is already well underway. Those that survive will need to remake their malls into destination experiences in some way. Malls used to be entertainment hubs in themselves just because of the fact that they provided shopping and dining experiences and a place to hang out (younger crowd) or a place to escape (Mom's day out). But reduced foot traffic in malls and higher operating costs have exposed too-thin margins that are killing mall retail populations rapidly. And people shifting their tastes to experiences rather than material goods is causing consternation among retailers as well. Add to that the fact that malls aren't that attractive as hangout places anymore, which is not unrelated to the retail demise. As most malls continue to disappear or morph into something else through deliberate re-purposing (eg., residences), this one does not seem like it has the right ingredients to be a mall survivor. It just feels like a dead experience when you're there. 6 PM on a weeknight might not be at the top of primetime, but evidence of life should have been better than what I saw. This mall seems like a place where you go to pick up something at a particular store and you leave. There's little temptation to stick around once you've accomplished your purpose because there's no reason to do so. That's not sustainable for the retailers. The business model of malls dictates the opposite if it's going to work. The tenants are supposed to synergistically support each other in attracting patrons who come to browse multiple shops. It seems like this is going the way of the transition in retail that is embodying the end of an era. Change is happening rapidly in America's commercial culture. But that's life. Who knows? Maybe someone with some vision and creativity will figure out a survive-to-thrive plan for this establishment. But realistically I don't think this place will still exist in ten years, at least not as a conventional mall.

This is a brand new store. Curiously located right next to a TJ Maxx (they're practically the same…read morestore) in a busy strip mall. Now, it was certainly my own mistake for visiting on the Sunday two weeks before Christmas, but this place was an unorganized madhouse! There were probably way more people in the store than a fire marshal would allow. Products all over the floor, strewn about. And again, this is a brand new store... why design the store with seven checkout lanes if you're only going to have four open on one of the busiest shopping days? Gripes aside, it's a decent store with a slightly different selection than your average TJ Maxx and Marshall's. As we got away from the clothing/shoes/accessories, we found the home goods section to be in much better order. We picked up a few nice picture frames for less than $10 each, so I'd call that a win. They also had a great selection of auto accessories, surprisingly. The wait in line was about a half hour... very ridiculous. Anyway, they need more cashiers on duty to handle demand and also dedicated staff to keep stock off the floor.

However, the selection in this store doesn't represent the true Ross experience. There is not as many high quality brands that Ross usually sells at a deep discount. They do carry a lot of cheap, trendy clothing. There is not a wide variety of sizes for women. The designer handbag selection has never been great. They do occasionally have a great shoe selection. It is really hit or miss. The store is usually clean & organized. The prices are usually good if you can find a treasure. However, the next door neighbor, TJ Maxx, usually has a better selection. The Ross stores I have been to in the north are very different than the ones in the south. This isn't it. The buyers for this store are cheating you out of a great Ross experience.

Personally, a friend of mine had flown in to Detroit so we got a room right around the corner from the airport. While we were in town for a beard and mustache competition, we still had plenty of time for me to show the sites. Since Dearborn and Taylor were in the middle of our hotel and where we needed to be in downtown Detroit, we decided to check out a few places outside of our trip to Ann Arbor. We had to be out of our room by 11am and the flight didn't go out until 4pm, so we had a few hours to kill. I needed to get a new piercing ring, so I figured I would find a Spencer's or Hot Topic; some place like that. That led me to the Southland Center in Taylor. The way the GPS took us, it felt like it was the back way and this shopping center was some sort of hidden destination. The parking lot seemed adequate and clear. Inside the mall, it was relatively quiet, but it was also midweek. The atmosphere was really trendy. There were a lot of couches and chairs in seating areas which were filled with students and their earbuds. It didn't take long for me to find a jewelry place. And we decided to roam around some more. Found some really cute shops and it was here I was introduced to PMA Designer Oils and Auntie HoneyBee's homemade line of lotions, potions, and soaps. Heaven. One other thing that really stood out to me was the section which connected the mall to the Best Buy. I have never seen a Best Buy connected to a mall like that, so that in itself was pretty interesting. But the transitions area, complete with bathrooms, also had benches and a nice relaxing pond and waterfall.
