I loved coming to Fairlane when I was a kid and running up and down the ramps. These days the only store worth visiting at this mall is Macy's and it's a fairly small location compared to the Macy's at other malls. Most of the mall is closed storefronts or cheap clothing stores. There aren't a lot of options at the food court either. It's only a matter of time until Fairlane closes down like so many other malls in the metro area.

This visit to the GM Renaissance Center felt bittersweet. With GM moving its global headquarters to…read morethe Hudson's Detroit building, much of the RenCen is already closed for renovation. Level A - the first floor was closed, and we could only walk around Level 1, with limited access to view the cars from above. For years, this has been one of my favorite spots to bring friends when they visited Detroit. Seeing everything from vintage GM models to upcoming vehicles all in one place always felt iconic. Knowing this was likely one of the last visits before major demolition begins made it feel even more emotional. We'll truly miss this space as we've known it. The change, while disappointing at first, makes sense. The two office towers closest to the river, along with the connecting podium, are slated for demolition. The original 1970s-era design simply no longer fits modern work needs, especially with the shift toward remote and hybrid work. While it's sad to see this space go, the future plans, opening up the riverfront and creating a Navy Pier-style park and entertainment area, give hope that something even better is coming.

Phase one was completed in 1977 with additional towers added in 1981 for a total of seven! Sadly, General Motors decided to relocate its headquarters elsewhere and much of the office space is vacant. I checked and Devonshire Malls right over the border here, about 3 miles or so. I checked the directory and it had a decent selection of things to check out, so off I went. The parking lot here's atrocious, and really needs an overhaul. Small parking spaces, uneven pavement, potholes and a general mish mash of messiness. NOT a great first impression. It's not the fanciest mall and seems rather dated on the outside. Could use a facelift big time. BUT, walking in it was a totally different story! The inside was great. Very up to date and let me tell you, the bathrooms here are NICE! LOTS of stalls, very cool with a beautiful sink setup with lots of mirrors and room to move around. I will say, the mall was bigger than I'd expected. It's laid out a little different and seems to "fork off" a bit. They have a Roots store here, which I used to love as a kid, but I think has since closed in Birmingham. It was all the rage when I was growing up! They had a cute kitchen store that was going out of business but I didn't buy anything there at all. They had a Hudson's Bay store, but I didn't really like anything there either. The food court here was super cool, large and had a great selection of food to choose from. I secretly wanted to try the Mandarin place but was holding out since I had other plans for lunch. They also had some super nice Christmas decorations up along with a "meet santa" area as well. It was so cute! Overall, it was a decent experience to get some steps in, see what's happening here and get out of the house!

Parking is plentiful but can be a walk depending on where you park. Inside is welcoming and updated in a modern design. Very clean as well. Food court is solid! Tons of options and places to sit. Lots of stores! Nothing too high end but still some good stores to check out. Roots is my personal favorite. Benches throughout if you needed a shopping break. Spent a few hours here both shopping and eating.

I think it's dog-friendly as we saw someone with their cute pup inside shopping. The space was open and not too cluttered, which I always appreciate since I can get kind of overwhelmed in vintage/antique shops. Each area was nicely curated and it was easy to tell where each "booth" started and ended. I saw a variety of housewares, clothing, decor, etc. and had fun looking around finding some treasures. We didn't end up buying anything this time, but would definitely stop in again next time we're in the area.

I replaced them and continued to have issues. I then spent $60 on a part that did not fix it. The other part I need is another $75. I asked if they could help or replace the part (they have several in store) and was having a conversation with one of the owners who then proceeded to read and ignore my messages for days. Then asking again and I was treated awful. They refused to help at all and claimed to not have the part. I have attached the pics of my conversation. I was also told I shouldn't have used Arcade 1up support to try to fix it. I bought a microwave, an arcade, and several small items totally around $600. This business doesn't care about customers. They want your money and then don't care if you ever return. Scum of the earth business practices from scummy people. You should be ashamed. The claim that I was allowed to fully test in store is also false. A man stood there holding the power cord and extension cord and after 3 seconds of it being on started saying everything looks good. I was rushed and sold bum product. They have at least 5 other units and claim not to have the parts to replace it. What a joke. Better Business Bureau will also be contacted. Stay away and save your money.

There are a lot of name brand and quality pieces in their shop, especially the toys: it really surprised me. We didn't really see pricing on items in the store and it is packed with products (enough so that it can be hard to find or view things), but I realized afterwards that it would be better to check their website beforehand for whatever you want and then check the site when in the store for pricing on random items you find.

I enjoy the colors of many of the objects but, beyond that, I really like the designs within the fabrics. The yarns and threading material used in most of the textiles is natural and durable. A testament to artistry and craft. Service here is also exceptional. Management and staff are knowledgeable abut their clothing and wares. Last but not least there are objets d'art of unqusetiinable beauty. Prices are reasonable.

This mall is laid out in a very different manner relative to other more conventional malls. It…read morelooks linear with side halls from the schematic...but it doesn't feel like it. It does not have the grand, high-ceiling, well-lit atrium most large malls would have. It's a little dim inside and feels a little dead since an alarming number of its storefronts are empty. There's also very few food options giving people less reason to spend time there. The anchors are reduced to Kohls and Penneys, and I fear for the longevity of the latter. There were very few people in the mall when I was there save a few mall walkers and a couple of people pacing on their phones. On the plus side, there is a nice children's play area outside Penneys and the large atrium at the end of the mall is a nice space, even though dark. The Easter Bunny was there and set up for kids' pictures, so there was still some evidence of at least minimal vitality. And some of the shops still open were favorites such as Penney's, Kohl's, Spencer's, Lids and Victoria's Secret. It is my theory that about 20 - 25% or so of the existing large 60s-70s-80s era malls will survive over the next few years because that wil be all that the market will support. That trend, of course, is already well underway. Those that survive will need to remake their malls into destination experiences in some way. Malls used to be entertainment hubs in themselves just because of the fact that they provided shopping and dining experiences and a place to hang out (younger crowd) or a place to escape (Mom's day out). But reduced foot traffic in malls and higher operating costs have exposed too-thin margins that are killing mall retail populations rapidly. And people shifting their tastes to experiences rather than material goods is causing consternation among retailers as well. Add to that the fact that malls aren't that attractive as hangout places anymore, which is not unrelated to the retail demise. As most malls continue to disappear or morph into something else through deliberate re-purposing (eg., residences), this one does not seem like it has the right ingredients to be a mall survivor. It just feels like a dead experience when you're there. 6 PM on a weeknight might not be at the top of primetime, but evidence of life should have been better than what I saw. This mall seems like a place where you go to pick up something at a particular store and you leave. There's little temptation to stick around once you've accomplished your purpose because there's no reason to do so. That's not sustainable for the retailers. The business model of malls dictates the opposite if it's going to work. The tenants are supposed to synergistically support each other in attracting patrons who come to browse multiple shops. It seems like this is going the way of the transition in retail that is embodying the end of an era. Change is happening rapidly in America's commercial culture. But that's life. Who knows? Maybe someone with some vision and creativity will figure out a survive-to-thrive plan for this establishment. But realistically I don't think this place will still exist in ten years, at least not as a conventional mall.

This is a brand new store. Curiously located right next to a TJ Maxx (they're practically the same…read morestore) in a busy strip mall. Now, it was certainly my own mistake for visiting on the Sunday two weeks before Christmas, but this place was an unorganized madhouse! There were probably way more people in the store than a fire marshal would allow. Products all over the floor, strewn about. And again, this is a brand new store... why design the store with seven checkout lanes if you're only going to have four open on one of the busiest shopping days? Gripes aside, it's a decent store with a slightly different selection than your average TJ Maxx and Marshall's. As we got away from the clothing/shoes/accessories, we found the home goods section to be in much better order. We picked up a few nice picture frames for less than $10 each, so I'd call that a win. They also had a great selection of auto accessories, surprisingly. The wait in line was about a half hour... very ridiculous. Anyway, they need more cashiers on duty to handle demand and also dedicated staff to keep stock off the floor.

However, the selection in this store doesn't represent the true Ross experience. There is not as many high quality brands that Ross usually sells at a deep discount. They do carry a lot of cheap, trendy clothing. There is not a wide variety of sizes for women. The designer handbag selection has never been great. They do occasionally have a great shoe selection. It is really hit or miss. The store is usually clean & organized. The prices are usually good if you can find a treasure. However, the next door neighbor, TJ Maxx, usually has a better selection. The Ross stores I have been to in the north are very different than the ones in the south. This isn't it. The buyers for this store are cheating you out of a great Ross experience.
