I've been waiting three years to write this review.
The first Fairfield apartment my wife and I were shown someone had hastily moved out of or were evicted from. Cabinets were broken. There was trash everywhere. Alcohol bottles. The toilet was cracked and broken. But this is the apartment Fairfield chose to show potential renters. We didn't rent that apartment obviously, but this should have been a sign.
My wife and I moved into our apartment at Fairfield on the Bay in August 2019. When we got there I spent the first day cleaning the entire apartment because the cleaning company didn't come, and although the super cleaned it, it wasn't the best job. The apartment was filthy. We wanted part of our first months rent deducted or part of our security deposit back and they refused, and instead offered to have someone come clean the apartment, after we already cleaned it.
Our neighbor three doors down was a constant nuisance and while we lived there, three sets of tenants moved out of the apartment next to him because of the fact that he was constantly fighting with his girlfriend, screaming at all hours, selling drugs out of the apartment, having other people living there illegally and getting into fights. I'm 33 and lived in several apartments in college and never have had such a bad living experience.
This same neighbor verbally and almost physically attacked my wife in November 2021, calling her homophobic slurs and throwing garbage and debris at her and when we informed Fairfield Properties they essentially told us there was nothing they could do. They took no action to make sure that we were okay, or that anything like this would happen again. I had to constantly call and email them to even get them to give me insufficient, rude and condescending responses. I have never dealt with a company with worse customer service, and such incompetent employees.
I asked for a copy of my lease for months after this incident and the only time they had the courtesy to respond to me is when I told them I was breaking my lease. Suddenly someone was immediately available to send me lease break paperwork. But from November until March no one was available to take my calls, or answer my emails unless I emailed the company repeatedly. I also work in Melville near the corporate office, and although I understand not wanting people to contact property managers at their place of work, when I had to file a police report and had other concerns, they could have made someone available to speak to me.
Speaking of the conditions of the apartments:
They flooded after Sandy and many were destroyed and then redone, but no other mitigating measures were taken to make sure these apartments would not flood again, and the electricity is still faulty in the apartments that face the water.
Our foundation / floor was uneven and there was an actual space between the floor and baseboard where drafts and bugs would get in. ants, disgusting house centipedes, the list goes on.
The apartment was always freezing even when the heat was on 70 degrees plus.
The tile in the bathroom and the tub probably hadn't been replaced since the 60s. The tub was scratched and very slippery. The caulk would constantly slough off in pieces. Our drain never drained and would sometimes back up into our tub and sink.
The communal laundry rooms were disgusting, and although that's partially the tenants fault - we were paying over $2,100 to live in these apartments, and had to deal with laundry machines that were constantly broken, garbage cans that were not cleaned out where people would put their personal garbage - I saw it full of maggots once, and drains on the floor clogged with hair and garbage. Someone also took a shit in their comforter and just left it on the communal table in the laundry room - dirty. That was the last straw, and when we started using a laundry service.
It seemed like I was the only one making the calls to get the machines that were always backing up with water and breaking fixed.
There were no recycling services offered. The garbage was often over flowing because pick up was only about twice a week.
People would also never clean up after their dogs, which again is the responsibility of the tenants, bur ground maintenance should then make an effort to clean it up as well. I shouldn't have to walk out of my apartment to a giant mound of dog feces.
Our super was honestly the only good thing about our apartment. He is such a sweet man. He definitely deserves a raise for dealing with such awful people, and tenants.
It is a absolutely reprehensible that a company worth 43 million dollars according to figures I found on google, let's people live in such disgusting conditions and puts profit over quality service, and their tenants satisfaction and safety.
Listen to the reviews. Don't ever rent from Fairfield.
