The Fairfield Inn & Suites in Southport opened in September of 2020. I was told it was once a Hampton Inn that was renovated to a Fairfield. The building looked brand new to me so the renovations were great. The front desk staff was so friendly when I arrived as well as when I checked out. My questions about the area were answered and I learned about getting to the ferry from the hotel. Yelp did not have any photos so I did my best to capture what to expect. The fitness center is large with a variety of equipment. The outside pool wasn't opened yet. The breakfast area was large and there was a good assortment to choose from. I didn't care for the eggs and the oatmeal was watery. I liked the variety of toppings for the oatmeal though. The hotel has just one elevator but there was never much of a wait. My room was a good size with plenty of room. I liked the hooks on the wall. The tv lineup had some cable stations but not the full lineup. The wifi was adequate so no complaints there. There is an Italian restaurant on the other side of the parking lot so that was convenient. I will stay here again the next time I am in the area.

The Inn at River Oaks

This little inn is a great way to take in the charm of Southport, NC. It's an older roadside motel…read morefrom the 1950s, but is in the process of being renovated and updated under its new management. Rebecca, the innkeeper, is an incredible host, and the rest of the staff is equally friendly and accommodating. The rooms my family and I stayed in were newly renovated, with hardwood floors, new beds, paint, fixtures, appliances, and furniture. The WiFi worked perfectly, the beds slept like a dream, and the overall ambience really worked for our getaway. When we come back for another Southport visit, we will be returning to River Oaks. A few things to keep in mind: - Not all rooms are fully updated yet, but each room has new features that are slowly being added, like curtains, beds, lamps, better WiFi, and so forth. All will eventually be updated, per a discussion with Rebecca. If you want one of the more updated rooms, reach out to her for more info. - The inn does not run like a normal one, as it's more of a vacation rental than a standard inn. Management lives offsite, but is readily reachable by phone and can quickly arrive if needed. The staff for maintenance and cleaning arrive in the morning and leave in the afternoon, but can also help with anything. - Your room key is delivered by phone, via OpenKey, which was a new experience for us. Just download the app before your arrival, and it makes the process easier. It's a fairly simple key to use; just open the key within the app and press the black button on the door; rather quickly, the door unlocks. If a physical key is needed, please ask management and they will provide one for you. - There is very little need to use a car, as the main attractions and areas of Southport are easily reachable by walking. Downtown is a ten minute walk, and Yacht Basin is about 15. - The town has a strict "no branding" policy, when it comes to businesses, which really offers up a unique opportunity to support locally owned eateries and shops. That being said, leave any expectations for Starbucks and McDonald's far behind. - Like I mentioned at the top of this post, this is a building from the 1950s, so it does have an older presentation on the outside and interior, in terms of design; things weren't built then as large as they are today. The rooms aren't closet-sized by any means, but are more in line with the size of a guest bedroom/bath at a standard house.

I'm the energy of this place is so wonderful. The trees tell stories of the past and the ocean just looks extra beautiful from here. There are so many different styles of places to stay in. No matter how wonderful all of those trips have been our family will always hold a special place in our hearts for Bald Head Island. So here are the disclaimers: 1. If you are looking for putt putt golf and go carts...don't go here 2. If you are looking to eat out every night at a different restaurant...don't go here 3. If perfect cell service is a 100% must...don't go here 4. If you like being around a lot of people with the hustle and bustle...please don't go here. Bald Head Island is a secluded island off of Cape Fear NC. The only way to the island is by ferry after leaving your car on the main land. Once on the island there are golf cart like trams that take you and your luggage to the your home (rented or owned). The majority of the island is a nature preserve covered in trees and marsh land which is only disturbed by the pathways used by golf carts that bustle around the island carrying visitors to the Golf club, the Social Pool club, the Harbor or the beach. There is a grocery store, a couple clothing stores and a couple of restaurants on the island. For our family the allure is cooking dinner together at our rental then sitting around and playing board games and talking. Most of these are a lost art in daily life. Bald Head Island is so special that it caught the eye of Southern Living Magazine which built its annual design house on the island last year. For those who like excitement I suggest Myrtle Beach or Vegas. To reconnect with your family I fully endorse Bald Head Island.

We booked 2 rooms for 2 days. There was a very strong odor of dog urine in the office. The owner/…read morereceptionist had 3 dogs running around in there. The rooms were reasonably clean. However there were used false eyelashes and a couple of press on nails left on top of the microwave. The first day went well. The second day we went to the pool. There was an electrical outlet on the wall that my daughter plugged her phone charger into. There were no signs stating not to use outlet. The owner/ receptionist came out and started screaming at my daughter for using it. My daughter repeatedly apologized but the woman continued screaming, cursing and verbally abusing my daughter in front of my grandchildren and other motel guests called her stupid, an idiot, a moron ect. Continued screaming as my daughter was walking away. The woman was wanting a fight and we would not argue with her. She was screaming "I'll have you kicked out of here" I gathered up my grandchildren and our belongings, went back to the room and started to pack up our stuff to leave. We were embarrassed and confused as to the owners behavior and no longer felt comfortable or safe staying there. While packing up I lifted the bed covers and discovered a bed bug ( took pictures)upon further inspection I found more , which would explain the bites on my legs when I woke up. We were there for my grandsons birthday. Needless to say the owners hysterical, unprofessional volatile meltdown put a damper on the celebration. We have been going there for 10 years and never experienced this type of behavior from the staff. I believe she may have a problem with people of color since we brought a friend with us who is non-white and haven't experienced this behavior previously
