And what makes this so crazy is the fact that this location was renovated about 5 years ago! I want to start with the good and talk about the people here. They do have great employees that are always kind and emphatic to you, but must not have any control over the condition of the hotel. They do have a market like most Marriott properties where you can buy frozen food, drinks, and snacks, and have a continental breakfast every morning with eggs, some sort of meat, yogurt, waffles, bagels, cereal, and usually either hash brown patties or biscuits. Each room comes with the basics. A TV, bathroom, closet, window, etc.. There are no balconies in any of the rooms. Last time I was here, the shower drain was stopped up and ended up flooding my bathroom a bit. This time, NONE of the room keys could open ANY of the room doors, meaning that no one could get into their room. The ONLY thing that they had was a little key fob that they used to get people in their rooms. Meaning that the employee working at the front desk had to go with the resident to their room to open their room for them. That is ridiculous. And there have been issues before that, but these are the two recent ones. I would not recommend staying at this property.

The staff was excellent. They helped at every opportunity, with even the cleaning staff taking…read moretime to say hi and to offer anything to make my stay more enjoyable. Let me tell you about the time we stayed at the most unforgettable hotel. We came for the marathon,…read moreand if we had known there were so many other options. PRO TIP: River Hotel of Southport is just down the road. We had to wait about 10 minutes for someone to come to the front desk - and every time we came to the front desk it was always the same. Nobody was there. The moment we walked in, we were welcomed by a delightful scent - and no, it wasn't the fresh bouquet of flowers you'd expect. Nope, it was a thick cloud of smoke that made you wonder if the room had been a hotspot for secret smokers' club meetings. It was like a Willy Wonka nightmare. Candy trash was everyone. We found 3 pieces of trash... including a whole box under the bed. But the real surprise was that housekeeping clearly did not believe in their duties. The trash sat there, like some sort of statement piece, mocking us the entire stay. I was almost tempted to start a scavenger hunt to see how many more wrappers I could find, but I figured I had better things to do than cleaning up after whoever stayed there before us. Now, let's talk about the sheets. They were like Swiss cheese--full of holes. If I'd known I'd be sleeping under a patchwork quilt of fabric flaws, I could've just gone to a thrift store for a better deal. It was like they had taken the concept of "sheets" and said, "Nah, let's just make them as threadbare as possible and hope no one notices." But we noticed, and I couldn't shake the feeling that the sheets might collapse into a pile of dust at any moment. Alright, here comes the icing on the cake: breakfast. I don't know what they were going for, but if "breakfast" means stale bagels, tasteless fruit, and eggs that looked like they had been sitting in a science experiment for 72 hours, then congratulations, you nailed it. We passed on the "eggs" after realizing they were just yellow rubbery blobs that had no business being called food. And the coffee? Oh, the coffee was so weak, I wondered if they were just heating up tap water with a hint of coffee grounds. I didn't even bother asking the staff about the breakfast options because, well, I'd already come to terms with the fact that no one was really around to help us anyway. Not to mention the SPOT LIGHTS from the front of the hotel coming straight through our windows. Luckily, we bought cheap trash bags at the luxury Wal Mart down the road. At this point, we decided we couldn't take another night in this hotel. The lack of staff, the smoke-filled room, the candy wrappers, the non-existent housekeeping, and the shredded sheets were more than we could endure. We made the executive decision to bail, driving five hours home in defeat. We left the hotel room exactly as we found it--because who were we kidding? Housekeeping wasn't coming for it. I would say this hotel is "one of a kind," but honestly, I hope it's the only one of its kind. If you're looking for a place where you can sleep under a cloud of smoke, live among the ghosts of candy wrappers past, and pretend your sheets are still functional, then by all means, book this place. For anyone else, though, save yourself the trouble. One star for the sheer comedy of it all. Wouldn't stay here again if they paid me. We heard rumors of bugs from other guests. But we can't confirm that.

No matter how wonderful all of those trips have been our family will always hold a special place in our hearts for Bald Head Island. So here are the disclaimers: 1. If you are looking for putt putt golf and go carts...don't go here 2. If you are looking to eat out every night at a different restaurant...don't go here 3. If perfect cell service is a 100% must...don't go here 4. If you like being around a lot of people with the hustle and bustle...please don't go here. Bald Head Island is a secluded island off of Cape Fear NC. The only way to the island is by ferry after leaving your car on the main land. Once on the island there are golf cart like trams that take you and your luggage to the your home (rented or owned). The majority of the island is a nature preserve covered in trees and marsh land which is only disturbed by the pathways used by golf carts that bustle around the island carrying visitors to the Golf club, the Social Pool club, the Harbor or the beach. There is a grocery store, a couple clothing stores and a couple of restaurants on the island. For our family the allure is cooking dinner together at our rental then sitting around and playing board games and talking. Most of these are a lost art in daily life. Bald Head Island is so special that it caught the eye of Southern Living Magazine which built its annual design house on the island last year. For those who like excitement I suggest Myrtle Beach or Vegas. To reconnect with your family I fully endorse Bald Head Island.

Back in September of 2024 room 321 was infested with mold so badly it needed to have been attended to by professionals. The owner of this IHG hotel claimed it on his insurance and then had their maintenance staff go in with mops and a product called Gel Pro and get the mold off the walls, then just paint over the surfaces. People have no idea they are breathing in Black mold spores floating throughout this hotel. Sure everything looks clean on the surfaces but that's only because they cover up the mold as it presents in each room with painting. They also have two illegal immigrants LIVING and working in the hotel being paid under the table while the other housekeepers are getting paid next to nothing. Housekeepers are expected to wear uniforms but the 2 illegals that live in the hotel, do not and the rules don't apply to them. When the housekeepers wanted a raise the "second in command" Cindy King told the supervisor at the time that the housekeepers will only appreciate the raise on their first paycheck after. The management is awful to the staff and if you don't conform to their every whim they will dismiss you without a legal reason. Back in September 2 housekeepers filed discrimination complaints that the owner of the hotel, 2nd in command Cindy King and 3rd in command John were all aware of, they fired them due to it. Also a supervisor was let go after disclosing a disability only 3 days later via text message. (there is noted documentation) Do not support this hotel and do not put yourself at a health risk staying here for any amount of time. The picture added below is from Room 321. Other rooms that have had issues include 412,414, 416, 323, 209, 409,309, 107 and the list goes on. They will also have a list of excuses degrading those that have spoken out about the mistreatment of staff and the black mold issues at this hotel so just be prepared.
