Mac's Country Store

Mac's Country Store

Sometimes the best food is in unlikely places and according to Saveur Magazine and The Washington…read morePost, Mac's is a hidden gem truly hidden in middle of nowhere backwoods Virginia. It's in cellphone reception-less Roseland, Virginia off a few country roads. Once you see the only gas station for miles, it would be easy to move on, but just wait...Mac's is in the gas station! Passing a beaten up truck and a few overall wearing locals, walk inside and order the fried chicken sandwich with all the fixins (onions, lettuce, a jumbo slice of a tomato, and mayo) for a whopping $4. If they ask if you want potato wedges, save $2 and skip it. They weren't very good and you literally get 5-6 of them. The chicken sandwich itself was good for being in a gas station. It's definitely better than Chick-fil-A but not as good as the best you've ever had. If you stumble upon Mac's randomly, you'd be blown away by how good a simple gas station in literally the middle of nowhere could make such a good sandwich. However, if you're coming from a city with good food, save the trip. Sorry Saveur and The Washington Post.

Mac's is a nondescript country store and gas station on Highway 151 in Roseland that happens to sell outstanding fried chicken - crisp and moist with just the right seasoning. This is what fried chicken is about, not that greasy junk at KFC. Indeed, Mac's chicken is as good, if not better, than Mitchell's in Lynchburg (also in the Crummy But Good genre). Choose the number of pieces, white or dark meat and whether or not you want a side and dinner rolls. Mac's offers other items, but it's hard to make a case when the chicken is this good. The store managers are friendly and there are a handful of rustic tables in the back of the store should you wish to dine-in. Mac's is a great place to stop for lunch while visiting the local orchards. If you're willing to overlook the exterior, great fried chicken will be your reward. Just be sure to top off your tank before heading back to town.

They never have any food cooked. Before lunch, at lunch or after lunch it's the same story. No food…read moreprepared. When you ask the cook, When are you going to have more chicken up? "Well, we have some cooking , but it's already sold" WTH? I don't care when you come in there, they never have anything fixed and the employees are idiots. Go somewhere else.

Early day. Long day. Hot day. If you're driving along TN Hwy and feeling parched because you…read moredropped / spilled / forgot your cup of ice, learned (painfully) the metal water bottle is hotter than the pavement outside, the a/c is not working well, the car spews waves of heat into the air as it gasps on the last drops of gas fumes in the tank, and now you're hallucinating palm trees, coconuts and umbrella drinks on every broken stripe on the highway, take heart. Around the next bend is Shady's. Shady's is a standard convenience store/gas station. It's a little drab on the inside, but the people who work here are pretty awesome and that brightens it up. The a/c functions (I think), the beverage coolers are well stocked with every type of liquid refreshment, there are plenty of snacks, the gas pumps work, and the stray cats outside begging for food are really good at it. The day I stopped in, Shady's air conditioning wasn't working and the employee was sitting outside in the shade; but compared with the inside of my car, I could have been at the north pole. The cold water numbed my frustration, but then so did the friendly employee who apologized for the lack of air conditioning and then spent time commiserating. I don't know though, she only might have been pretending empathy once I started talking about the umbrella drinks in the middle of the highway.
