Not sure if it's worth driving to The Valley just for cake, but What Would Ethan Hunt Do?…read more Like I'm sure at least 30% of their clientele, I first heard about Doan's when multiple news outlets started posting about the magical White Chocolate Coconut Bundt Cake that Tom Cruise gifts colleagues and associates every year right before Christmas. Whatever you think of Tom Cruise, he is a towering figure in entertainment and thus a pillar of Los Angeles civic pride... if Pete "Maverick" Mitchell esteems a piece of dessert to this degree, who are we mere mortals to ignore such ambrosia? You can get a whole 10" cake delivered to you anywhere in America for $140... or you can make the trek out to Woodland Hills and get it for much less. For a simple "taste test" if you're counting calories or afraid of commitment, they also have Mini Bundt Cakes about the size of a large slice of cake for individual or shared enjoyment. The cake is good: I wouldn't say it's great... although I suppose to someone like Tom who rarely ever consumes sugar, it probably tastes like Heaven. Sweet but not teeth-achingly so, the mix of cream cheese frosting, coconut flakes, white chocolate chips, and coconut bundt cake really reminds me of something grandma would serve you when you'd go for a visit... Definitely would go great with some hot coffee with lots of cream and sugar. I got a Mini Bundt Cake and a cookie for $21.50... not the most affordable treat but also not an absurd price for something that has reached near-mythical status. Would I drive to The Valley just for this? That's a big HELL NO from me... but if I'm in the area and looking for something sweet and a story to go with it, Doan's Bakery provides a fantastic option.

Today was my second visit to this bakery, and I felt bad for not thinking to give them a five star…read morereview on my first visit. I just moved into a new residence in Woodland Hills and wanted to find some treats that I could gift my new landlords. I found this bakery using Google maps. This business is in a shopping center with plenty of parking but the center does get busy so you might have to look for a spot. The business itself is not very big. Upon entrance, you'll see their main display counter with many cookies, cupcakes, regular cakes. And then just to your right you will see a refrigerator with more cakes. On my first visit, I asked to fill a box with cookies-- two cookies of each kind. We definitely did not get to include all of their cookies, because two of each kind will fill up one of their little boxes quickly, but it was more than enough for my two landlords. Honestly, the cookies looked delicious and I wanted to eat them, but they were a gift so I restrained myself. As it turned out, one of my landlords is diabetic so he was not going to be able to enjoy the cookies I bought them, but his wife was more than happy to accept the gift. Today I stopped by to see what kinds of small personal cake options they had for a friend who is going through hard times. As I was looking through the options, it was brought to my attention that they do have some sugar-free options available. Now I know that I can come back and get more gifts for my Landlord's and include some sugar-free options. Today Millie helped me pick out a beautiful little mango cake for my friend. And it was clarified to me that this bakery is owned by a couple, one of whom is an artist and the other is a baker. And I was not surprised because the pastries here are all very aesthetically pleasing, and I can only imagine that they taste just as good as they look, if not better. I watch what I eat routinely very strictly, but I do look forward to returning here many times for all of the gifts that I will be getting for the people in my life. And Millie was such a delightful person. Such a pleasant human being. She helped me happily and warmly and all on her own was reason enough to leave a five star review, let alone all of the delightful and beautifully prepared treats that are offered at this business. A solid five stars all around for this business. Bakeries could not possibly be any better, only bigger. And that might not necessarily be a good thing. Five stars five stars five stars!
