The employees allowed vandalism and major damage to my unit. Thousands of dollars. They have ignored all requests for video coverage. They proved negligence in not providing security while removing the door and lock. This company is from California and does not carry any values that represent our community in Kona. This company does not care and will not take appropriate steps to rectify what they supervised. When I denied insurance, I did not sign up for this company removing my door. What this company did to me was an extreme violation of my life damaging my belongings and everything I own. Their response on the BBB was complete mainland aggression and their corporate office running from the problem. The employee on duty the night of the vandalism tried to make excuses that everyone should know Extra Space Storage in Kona has rats and I must be from New York if I don't know that. But the issue at hand is that employees threw over thousands of dollars of boxes onto leather couches and new washer and dryer. I am a teacher in the community and thanks to this business my items are damaged which took me many years of my career to save for. This company has put me in tears and I dearly regret ever doing business here. This is some of the poorest business practice I have ever experienced from a large company. read more

Gary is very professional and helpful and even loaned us a lock when we were in the process of moving from one unit to another. We came in looking for a smaller 5x10 unit and the employee, robin, took us out on a golf cart to see the unit. It isn't climate control like we needed but she assured us that it doesn't get too hot. She tried to meet our needs and even called another storage unit location to see if they had climate control available. I recommend this place even though they are practically sold out (for good reason). The gated units give me peace of mind as well read more

This place is pretty awesome. Needed a place to store some goods with only 2 hours notice. The gentleman working was very nice, got me the smallest room available which was 4x8 and about 10 feet tall. Only cost about 60 bucks for the month. And the first month was half price! He also knew I was in serious need of moving supplies so he hooked me up with a large moving box and some packing tape and even a lock for my storage unit! Couldn't ask for better service. Definitely recommend it for everyone. Clean facilities, long hours, lots of cameras and a gate with a pass code at the entrance. Your stuff is safe here! read more

Worst facility ever. The owner denied us access to our deceased father's unit, even though before he went into a coma, he gave us the key so we could retrieve his things. I have to leave for the mainland without family photo albums dating back to the 1880s. So my options are to pay the monthly fee on a unit I can't access for the rest of time, or let it go, she eventually auctions off the items of value and pockets the money and throws away the thing I really care about that have no value to anyone but me. All of this after telling me that she didn't care that our father died, that it wasn't her problem, it was mine. read more

In 2013 November I rented a 5x5x9 space from a local storage business called Big Island Storage. The space was within a large building and assumed they used pest control. This business (and all the privately owned local storage spaces) were bought out in October of this year by massive corporation Extra Space Self Storage. So I went in to sign a new contract but found the following . . . 1. There was no rate structure and they just charged me a higher rate with no price break down. 2. When I talked with rep that there had been a rodent & silverfish infestation with damage "that was not their problem" - but she would contact me about it after calling her supervisor - But she never did - and after several calls over a week period. 3. So tried emailing the corporation - But they just ignored my email (that was not nasty - only wondering why). 4. So I began to see the writing on the wall - they will probably upgrade the facility and start charging lots more - as they eliminate the competition by buying it all out - So I immediately moved out and into one still locally owned place - Aloha Plus Storage - and am very happy with them! - They use rodent & insect control and gave me a much better rate! . . . And do not act like impersonal corporations taking over the planet! NOTE - I filed a complaint with Consumer Affairs and noticed that not many others are very happy with Extra Space corporation either. read more

We have had a small storage closet near the Kona Costco for three years and it has made our 2x year month-long visits in rented houses so much easier. We can store beach chairs, snorkel gear, fishing gear, an inflatable double kayak, an SUP and paddles, umbrellas and toys, kitchen items including good knives and stable food sealed in air-tight packaging, paper products and basic tools that always seem to be missing when someone walks through a sliding screen door. It has paid for itself and the fact that it has no AC has not caused any deterioration in our belongings. The employees at Extra Space have always been helpful when we have questions and we feel secure in paying a year's fees ahead, gaining us a free month. We figure we have saved 4 months rental over the years and that pays for a lot of mai tais! All read more

At the end of January 2015, I was able to reserve online a great deal for a storage unit. Within minutes, I received a call from Robin confirming the reservation. She also mentioned to me that if I thought I would need more room, she had other units to show as well. I was pleased that she was friendly and helpful, since it was my first time doing this. The following day, I went to the office, which was conveniently out of the hustle and bustle of the Costco area traffic. I was greeted by Gary, the Manager. He was very friendly, fast and knowledgeable. Every question I could have thought of, he answered without me even asking. They also had boxes, tape and storage locks for sale too. Gary showed me the unit; it was clean and perfect for me. I signed up for the automatic payment because I don't go out to that area often and things are way too busy for me to remember to make the payment in person. I just checked my bank account and the monthly payment was taken out exactly when Gary said it would be. I'm happy with my entire experience. Fast, friendly and affordable! read more

Extremely pleasant managers/staff. Place is very clean and well-maintained. Rules and policies very clearly explained and are very reasonable. Posted offer was 1/2 off. Taxes and fees added to rent makes it a little expensive, but if you need the space, it has to be paid for. Felt that my belongings will be safe and secure, with easy access. Definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for some extra storage space. read more

We just rented a 10X12ll unit at this Extra Space Storage location and the were pleased to find the first month was free and additional months competitively priced with other local storage places. We moved from Colorado to Kona in January and all of our personal household goods, furniture and tools arrived by boat in Hilo in early February. We're building a house and it won't be ready till April, so we rented a furnished house till then. The staff at Extra Space were efficient and courteous, explaining clearly how it worked. When we hauled the UBOX with our goods to the storage unit, we easily pulled right up to the unit, found the space was clean and unloaded it all in less than an hour. We've been buying furniture for the new house and unloading what we buy into the unit. The key pass at the entrance and exit work well and it's fast in and out with great security. We were pleased to find this place. It is located a block from Costco and that is the least expensive location to buy fuel for vehicles by far so this location is just right for us. We feel great with our choice! read more
