Cigarettes are super (like insane) cheap, but things like, oh, I don't know, nuts and Mr. Pibb are kind of outlandish. They sell food here. Nachos, sandwiches, slushies... they even have a salad bar (smart!) and this place is clean as heck. They have free coffee here on Sundays. They have digital scales and rolling papers, I can't imagine what for. Unfortunately, they do not tonic or soda water. (Guess who likes gin?) I'm fine with this place existing. I'll continue to support my habits here.

I wouldn't drive out of my way, and I certainly wouldn't pass up a Supermercado El Rey for Monterey…read morebut that's the South Side standard. Monterrey is a Latin grocery, medium sized, and I always wondered why South American Spanish speaking culture is called, Latin. Turns out, of all the modern Romance languages, Spanish is the closest to the Roman language. It's closer to Roman Latin than modern Italian! This is the sort of thing one learns when stuck with a socio-linguist for any amount of time at a conference. Anyway, Monterrey doesn't quite have the variety of produce at El Rey, and MM is a little cramped. I was worried about knocking something over the whole time I was in the first time, my second and third times I felt a little more familiar with the layout but still it's a little close for comfort.

There are places you go to buy lunch, and then there are places that somehow turn buying lunch into…read morean experience. G. Groppi Food Market is the second kind. I walked into G. Groppi Food Market expecting to grab a sandwich. Somehow, about 30 seconds later, I felt like I had accidentally wandered into a tiny neighborhood market somewhere in Italy. This place has character. Everything feels old-school in the best possible way--beautifully organized produce, fresh meats, Italian sausages (including garlic Italian sausage and something appropriately called the "Angry Italian"), cheeses, olive oils, wines, prepared foods, and enough little discoveries on the shelves to make you forget you originally came in for lunch. Then there's the deli. The gentleman making sandwiches looked like he had stepped directly out of a 1920s movie: tall, slender, full mustache, old-school cap--the whole look. I half expected him to hand me my sandwich and then go outside and start a Model T. But beyond the style, he was incredibly welcoming, courteous, and genuinely added to the charm of the place. I ordered the turkey panini and had them make it spicy. Fantastic. The bread was perfectly toasted--crisp on the outside without being destroyed by the panini press--and the sandwich itself was fresh, flavorful, and exactly what I wanted. But here's where Groppi really got me. I took my sandwich and a bottle of San Pellegrino out to their little garden/patio area. It was one of those perfect Milwaukee fall afternoons: sweater weather, leaves falling from the trees, sunshine coming through the branches, and I'm sitting there eating this ridiculously good Italian sandwich thinking, Where has this place been hiding? They even have a bar in the back where you can enjoy your sandwich with a glass of wine, do a wine tasting, or grab another drink. They also make hot prepared foods--including mac and cheese and other meals you can take home--so this isn't just a deli. It's part neighborhood grocery store, part Italian market, part deli, part bar, and part little neighborhood escape. You can come here to grocery shop. You can come for fresh meat and sausage. You can grab a sandwich. You can sit outside with lunch. You can have a glass of wine. Or, apparently, you can walk in for a sandwich and spend the next hour pretending you're on vacation in a tiny Italian neighborhood. Absolutely loved this place. One of those Milwaukee gems that makes exploring the city worth it.

Santa Fe and Cubano are my two favorites. They are huge, so if you're not seriously hungry get the half and you'll be plenty full. They also have a wine bar in the back with a nice tap list of beers. There is a killer patio to hang out in, sip on your wine/beer as you savor your panini. You definitely feel like you're in Italy when you step into this market. Definitely one of the highlights when visiting the Bay View neighborhood.

That is only part of what I came to discover the BD really is. Since the first time I stopped in, I have been hooked on this little joint. The best way I can summarize what they offer is to say that they sell everything you could need for a beautiful summer day, whether you're grilling, boating or just hanging out. They have a decent selection of the standard beer, wine and liquor, but they also have some fun and quirky summer drinks to try as well. What I love even more than the drink selection is their little cold case full of deli items. They smoke their own pulled pork, which makes the best BBQ north of Kansas City. They also have these baked beans, man, I don't know what they do... So flippin good. Oh and get this: amazing steaks! They have fork-tender ribeye steaks, hand cut to order, for an insanely low price!!! They also have great brats from The Sausage Haus in Oconomowoc (represent the Dirty O!). Look, if you live in the Pewaukee area and don't know the magic of this small town, family-run mini grocery where you might find a 12-year-old exchanging your propane tank or swiping your credit card, then you need to get over to the Beer Depot and stop throwing your money at Pick N Save!

The store it self was unique because it's a liquor store but is has Bbq to go, pizzas, fresh rib eyes, cheeses, take and bake food, sandwiches, liquor, beer, wine, cigars etc. Unfortunately the Bbq is cooked in batches and sold out of the deli case cold that you have to reheat, not a big deal for me. I followed my rule that if you smell smoke when you walk in, I'm getting the full slab even though it's wrapped in foil and I couldn't see them. The full slab was very reasonable at $16.95 by the way. At first unwrapping I'm like dam nice bark and look how meaty the rack is, I hate that some places give you thin and bone racks so thank you for a nice rack. After heating up a third of the rack the bark came to life and was tasty, thick and sticky. The ribs were very meaty/tasty with that nice pink smoke ring but not very Smokey. The rib meat was moist and pulled clean off the bone. While there I bought a package of jalapeño meat sticks and a Czech beer from 1842, Pilsner Uequell imported it says. For a liquor store doing Bbq I'm giving them 4 stars because the ribs were good and they use meaty racks and at $16.95 for a full rack it's a good value. I would definitely get these take and bake Bbq ribs again and try other Bbq items from here.
