She has helped me with copy and print services, answered my questions and found my keys and remembered who I was (I had only been there a few times) so when I stepped out of the elevator she waved me down to return them. We met a man who was working (or was he just hanging out? not sure) there and was nice enough to give us a special tour of the place! He was so knowledgeable about the history of Portsmouth and was so passionate about the town. I saw some really neat artifacts here, including whale vertebrae...which totally made me squeal in excitement. Just take a visit to the Portsmouth Athenaeum and strike up a conversation. We went to the North End History exhibit and it was super-informative and very interesting. Lots of neat old photos and details about parts of Portsmouth we drive by on a regular basis without realizing their historical significance. Ask for James, ask a few questions, and sit back and laugh as he takes the history of the area and wraps it up in funny and memorable stories and anecdotes. Just a note - finish your food and coffee before visiting. There are some incredibly old books in this place and you don't want to spill!

This is an amazing public library. They have a very knowledgeable staff that will help you find…read morewhatever you're looking for - they have not only books but also CDs and DVDs - and if they don't have it will get it either by inter library loan or buying it themselves for the library's collection. They also have a great selection of magazines. The most current issue of each magazine has to stay in the library (you can read at one of their many tables or desks) but any older editions are available for checking out. They also have a great selection of audiobooks, which is great especially for children - listened to Harry Potter all the way to Canada and back when I was in middle school! This is also a wonderful place to study. I spent a couple weeks studying for the DAT for dental school here and the environment was great. Quiet, clean, and well lit I found it easy to work. There were also dozens of places to sit and free fast Wi-Fi. They have events for kids and reading hours, as well as helping you set up your eReader for access to NH's online library. This really is just about as good as a public library gets.

George Washington…read moreslept here The very first Newburyport Library was founded in 1855 and the books were housed in the building that is now the town hall. It was soon obvious that this was a pretty bad location so a new building was soon found. This new location for the library was the lovely federalist mansion built for Nataniel Tracy in 1777. Tracy was a very rich merchant that fought for the country as a privateer during the revolution. Tracy had lots of cool friends and guys like George Washington, John Adams, Aaron Burr, Thomas Jefferson and General Lafayette all were entertained and slept over in this house. Tracy made some foolish business decisions and lost all his money and his wonderful mansion ended up as the town's library. Over the years additions were added and the great old building changed in appearance to more Victorian and then modern. The last major addition was in 2001 and added a whole lot of new space. Still a very cool building, if you look you can see the incongruity of the structure and the roof lines inside and where many of the additions and changes took place. It is now a wonderful library just dripping with history. Lots of great old pictures of great old guys and grand staircases and antiques everywhere. A truly stunning building worth taking the time to visit and explore. I think there might even be some books inside.

When I've taken my young granddaughters they have treated us as if we were family. My granddaughters become excited when I simply offer to drive them there.
