The Exeter Inn is the oldest pub in the small town of Ashburton, a few miles west of Newton Abbot and not actually in Newton Abbot as the address suggests. It's foundations supposedly date to the 12th century, probably making it one of the oldest pub sites in the country.
Inside, it has a good, old fashioned pub look and the beer is well kept; not only that, but the beer is also rather nice ! Unfortunately, that seems to be where the good points end. When I visited a few days ago, the barmaid was pleasant enough but, having served me, she then carried on doing other things and eventually sat down behind the bar withouit making any real effort to bring about any sort of conversation. Two local customers at the bar were also far more interested in themselves than in being particularly welcoming to a stranger.
This is a pub that should do well and probably doesn't. As a 'free house' it has the opportunity to develop its trade as it sees fit but there was no real sign that much enthusiasm was present. It was disappointing. read more
