Went in a couple of Sundays ago in the evening after getting a misdiagnosis at an urgent care clinic a few days before. I was in New Hampshire on vacation and didn't really know where else to go. The check-in procedure was quick and the administrator was friendly. Within minutes a nurse took me back to take my vitals. They suddenly got busy (it is an ER after all) and I was pushed back while the more urgent new cases were handled. After about 45 minutes I was taken to an ER room. The nurses who attended to me were great--courteous, communicative, informative. I was given the names of everyone who might handle me and explanations of what these people would possibly do. After just a few minutes, I was attended to by a PA who was professional and friendly. He asked all the right questions, diagnosed me, and sent me on my way with a prescription within minutes. Check-in to check-out took maybe an hour and a half total. Thank you Exeter Hospital. read more

From what I understand, if you have a balance due with a hospital, most hospitals will give you a discount if you offer to pay off the balance. However, I was told by a representative that "We don't do that....unfortunately". Really?? Unbelievable. Exeter is rated one of the most expensive hospitals in the country yet they are unable to give their patients any sort of a break. I was hoping to get just a 20% discount by offering to pay off my balance. The answer I received left a very bad taste in my mouth, that's for sure. This is the very first time I have EVER written a reivew of anything. DO NOT go to Exeter Hospital if you have an emergency. I took my daughter there the other night at 9:30, there were a couple of people waiting, and probably a a couple in rooms, not a busy night, and it took 5 hours for her to see a doctor and be given a prescription for a kidney infection. The nurse started an IV but just left it in her arm with nothing in it. Lots of people passed by the room but only one girl told us that it would be soon the doctor was coming, around 1:45 AM. It was the worst service I have ever had at a hospital. Try to get the doctor to call back on Monday - not a chance!! I had all three of my children there, had three surgeries, several procedures all that went great with scheduled appointments. If you have an emergency go to Portsmouth Hospital. read more

My husband was recently diagnosed with Sarcoidosis. Yesterday he woke up with drooping on the left side of his face. He went to see his primary care physician who, with another colleague who was also an MD, made the decision to send him to Exeter Hospital Emergency Department to get an MRI. It appeared that he had Bell's Palsy. If a person with sarcoidosis has any neurologic issue, advanced imaging is part of the standard of care. This is clearly stated in the medical literature. His referring doctor wrote that he wanted an MRI to be done before sending him. At the ER, a PA made the decision to override the decision of 2 MD's and cancel the MRI. Today, my husband called his doctor to report than no MRI was done. The doctor ordered the MRI and it was done this evening, requiring another trip to the hospital and several hours there. Our Healthcare system is so broken that proper care is not performed even when an individual's physician, who knows the patient and his history, specifically wants certain tests done. This is done even when these tests are recommended in the medical literature. I have to be very suspicious of an emergency department that second guesses the plan of an MD. I am not confident that appropriate medicine is being practiced at the Exeter emergency department. read more

Worst experience in a ER...no one to help you once your placed in a room. Had to ask the orderly to find nurse for meds they were suppose to bring. They keep saying, we will get to you in 10 min but don't believe them 10 min turns to 30 min than an hour if you can't find someone to track ER staff down! Thank God for that orderly who helped us on 4 diff occasions, especially to get discharged! 5 1/2 hrs is too long and 1 hr is too long to have to wait for pain meds when your in agony! Do yourself and loved ones a favor and don't go here! Portsmouth is a little further but worth it! read more

I gave birth to my daughter there and it was a wonderful experience. I can't praise the nurses in the Family Center enough. They also recently redid their rooms...private suites with bath, flat screen TVs and free wireless. It's like a nice hotel. Their ER is also great. I've unfortunately had a few goes there, but never a complaint about either the wait or the treatment. The only recommendation I have is that they could use some more comfortable chairs in the waiting area. read more

If you're in the New Hampshire area and need to go to the hospital, please don't ever consider going to exeter. They're extremely neglectful and don't know how to do any of their jobs properly or come to a diagnosis for an obviously very ill patient with fever spiking up to 104 (whom of which they DISCHARGED with said high temperature). Go to Portsmouth, Dartmouth or Boston even, save yourself the grief of dealing with incompetent and extremely neglectful doctors with deplorable bedside manner. read more

Today is last time I go to Exeter Hospital. I went there today at 5:00 PM as my daughter fell and hit her head. She complained of stomach pain and dizziness. She appeared to be dazed and just not her self. I decided it best to have her checked out. Waited in the waiting room for a few hours then a nurse brought us to a room and told us the doctor would be in shortly. We left at 11:00 PM as no doctor ever came to see my daughter. Scary to think this organization is not thorough enough to review it's employees background or have time to evaluate all it's patience. Think I'll get a bill for services rendered? read more

I received the absolute worst care from the most unsympathetic nurses and doctors. I went in for help stopping drinking. They offered none and I was sent out the door 12 hours later even though I didn't have a ride. The doctor who discharged me was evil. She has no business being a doctor. I had to walk to downtown to find a warm place to wait for a ride. I went directly to Catholic medical center in Manchester where I had the kindest, most sympathetic doctors and nurses. They addressed the medical issues I needed for a safe detox and gave me a prescription for something that helped and had someone work with me on an aftercare plan. I am sober today. read more

NEVER go to the Emergency Room of Exeter Hospital! Go to Portsmouth Hospital instead. I didn't complain about my first nightmare experience: having to wait over 8 hours to see the Emgcy Room doctor when I was curled up in the fetal position in agony from stomach pains the entire time. EVERY SINGLE patient that arrived that day was taken in while I sat there, most for scheduled "checkups." My husband checked with the nurse every 1/2 hour, so I was not "forgotten," and just heard "we have no idea when you'll be seen." When I finally got into a treatment room at 8 p.m. (arrived before noon), still in agony, the nurse said she'd try to get the Dr. to see me immediately. Instead, he went to the room NEXT to me and took care of a girl with a minor bladder infection (I could hear). When he finally got to me, he was quite rude and uncouth, but luckily the problem was not serious (it easily could have been, with severe abdominal pain). So flash forward to the next visit, when my husband didn't want to take the extra time to drive to Portsmouth because he was in severe pain. They treated the problem, but the Emgcy Room Dr. Scott Paige apparently isn't in the Cigna network and sent us a bill for $1,111.50 OVER AND ABOVE Cigna's coverage and our required portion of it. It is called "Balance Billing" and means the health care provider can legally charge WHATEVER HE WANTS--far above the normal and allowable charges--and the patient has to pay out of pocket. It is absolutely UNETHICAL of Exeter Hospital (and the Dr.) not to give patients a "heads up"--we would have driven to Portsmouth Hospital to avoid throwing away over $1,000 on top of all we had already paid. read more

I have to be completely honest, I live 40 minutes from Exeter Hospital, I have 3 hospitals closer to me, and still I wouldn't go anywhere else, Exeter Hospital ROCKS! Everybody is amazingly nice. read more

I was in Exeter for a hockey tournament with my 14 year old. During the game another player broke his arm. Exeter was a quick shot down the street. We arrived and were taken car of very quickly. The ER doc got him meds and xray quite quickly. I never saw the Dr. again after that. The nurse and the PA were wonderful. We were told at the time that there wasn't an ortho doc in the hospital to deal with this. Just a knee guy. After giving him a quick call he said he didn't want to touch that. So, they Splinted him gave us xray and sent us on our way. The bad part of the experience come 2 days after we left. I brought him to a very respected sports med. Ortho Dr. in Concord He was amazed that they did not set my sons arm. His words were perturbed I not knowing anything about what should be done in a case like this.(as I shouldn't, that's why I went to the ER.). The ortho dr. gave us a choice Novocain and set it or go to the OR and do it under anes. due to the fact that is it very painful. My son, a trooper opted for the Novocain. What a horrible=y painful experience for him. The shot itself was so painful. Had I known I would opted for the OR. Based on this, although my son plays hockey in Exeter during the regular season, I will drive anywhere but here if this or any other injury were to happen. Upset that it seems it was an inconvenience to fully treat him that day! I would not send or recommend this hospital to anyone ever! read more

I had an emergency appendectomy about 5 years ago and the doctor nicked my colon. I had to spend 2 days in the hospital to check for infections. The bill came to over $30,000 of which my insurance company paid 90%. I was responsible for the difference and began paying in installments. App. 4 months later I noticed a bulge in my abdomen which was where the drainage tube was removed. As the months when on, and I continued to pay my bill, the bulge grew from golf ball size to softball size. I contacted Exeter Hospitals "customer care" and asked to be examined and have the remainder of my bill removed (app $2,000) dollars. One week later I received a letter that basically said I knew the risks and I needed to continue to pay for my deformity. They refused to examine me (my primary care physician examined me and said I had an umbilical hernia from the surgery) and when I stopped paying my bill, sent it to an attorneys office for collection. I talked to the attorney and explained my dilemma and he, of course, continued to insist I pay the bill. After several months, they said they were going to report me to the credit bureaus, which they did, and ruined my credit. I currently wear a harness to hold in my intestines and cannot remove my shirt in public. Recently, I have been getting calls from a collection agency insisting I pay the bill in full. Of course, I will never pay them another penny and have nothing good to say about Exeter hospital and their "customer care". read more

David B. Newmarket On 10/07/15, I was suddenly overcome by sever abdominal pains and difficult breathing. Newmarket FD Ambulance transported me to Exeter Hospital ER providing me with some relief along the way. ER Staff went to work immediately Acessing my situation and giving me more relief from the pain. Following Emergency Surgury For a perforated duodenal ulcer, I spent 2 days in ICU and 4 days in recovery. Every staff member, Doctors, Nurses, Nurses Aids, House keeping and office personel were very professional, caring and kind always asking if I needed or wanted anything. I was never ignored. My real praise goes out to the Nursing Staff. Those lovley ladies were always there keeping a constant vigil over me checking on my condition. There is no doubt in my mind that I am still standing upright today because of the actions of the Professionals at the Exeter Hospital. read more

I grew up in Exeter and I am BLOWN AWAY that this hospital has 5 stars?? This can't be real. This hospital has misdiagnosed me countless times, and my sister as well. The first time they did with me, MY HEART STOPPED. LITERALLY!!! And they had to call a different hospital to ask how to treat me. The next time they did it, they "made a mistake" that took me from going home that day, to being airlifted to Mass General where I had to stay for NINE MONTHS!! Not to mention the outrageous rate of malpractice suits that they have, which are far above the average. Or how about most recently the case of the drug addict that they employed and gave hepatitis to tons of patients??? Go to Portsmouth Hospital. Whatever you do, DO NOT GO THERE!!!!!!! I feel very strongly about this. They have misdiagnosed everyone I know so many times and it has led to serious serious problems. This is your health and your life. Don't risk it. read more

An oversight brought me to this ER. While I was present, I was not allowed to use the bathroom and, a nurse tried to give me a bed pan because it made her job easier she said. I explained that although I am in a wheelchair I can transfer myself in the bathroom. She started to threaten me with a straight catheter to obtain a urine sample. A family member was with me and he began to advocate for me as none of this was appropriate. The entire 37 hrs I was only allotted the bathroom once. If I asked again, I was thrown from my wheelchair like a rag doll restrained, and given a shot (twice). The doctor said it was easier for her to sedate me and she didn't care that it was wrong, or not good for me. Because I needed a bathroom, and a drink of water she screamed "this is not a hotel!" and sedating me was good for her she said. She said she didn't care about me. I was restrained for asking for water, or food, or the treatment through an IV port and, other life-saving oral treatments they haulted on baseless grounds. Many times refused food and water. I have a heart condition that went unmonitored many shifts and, untreated. Security had no reason to throw me around and, my family member witnessed the attacks and, started to video it. They called the police on the family member (a defenseless elderly person). Once released as no basis to hold me existed, the security gard who called me "bitch" said I had to wait outside (freezing rain in a hospital gown with the back open). He shouted insults at me working to upset me saying I deserve the heart ache in my life (my mom died suddenly this Christmas and it's been a tough go). I was really afraid of these people. I have a medical condition including a heart issue I cannot be out in a short sleeved jonny in freezing winter rain. Worst ER experience EVER. read more

This is not a true choice to go to their infusion lab. It is only because I'm 100% covered financially. If you had a choice don't go. The manager and nurses couldn't be more callous or rude, and sadistic. If you are early they will make you wait another hour after the appointment has been made. If you take a bus they will always try to schedule you for a day that's not your choice. Cindy (the nurse) should have been fired from here. She pretends she can't find your vein while se gets the ultrasound tech from downstairs to find your vein, immediately. They act like it's all your fault and I'm making a bid deal over nothing, while I'm covered in bruises. She was desperately trying to get me to respond a certain way. Cindy was trying to cause extreme pain and anguish, while the manager laughs and says "no rest for the weary". Watch out for these people they care nothing for others, it's a good paycheck, although they would say "What paycheck"? read more
