Subject: Outstanding Emergency Care at Exeter Hospital On Christmas Eve, my wife became suddenly ill while we were attending a family dinner at our daughter's home in Kensington, New Hampshire. She became unresponsive, and we immediately called an ambulance, which transported her to Exeter Hospital. From the moment she arrived, she was taken directly into the emergency room, placed in a bed, and attended to without delay. The nurses and attendants were calm, professional, and compassionate, and they clearly explained to our family what they were doing and what tests would be performed. The physician examined her promptly and ordered a full series of tests. Once the test results were available, the doctor came in to explain the findings. By that time, my wife had begun to regain responsiveness and improve. The doctors determined that the cause was dehydration, started her on IV fluids, and continued to monitor her closely. After about five and a half hours, she was discharged--still a bit weak, but almost completely back to normal. I cannot say enough about the quality of care we received. The doctors, nurses, and staff were extremely considerate, reassuring, and kept us informed every step of the way. We were comforted by their confidence and professionalism, and by their belief that she would make a full recovery. The facility itself was clean, well lit, efficient, and very pleasant--especially important during a stressful emergency situation. Everything about the experience reflected a well-run, compassionate hospital. I'm a senior. I had a fall that injured my lower back. I experienced severe back spasms whenever trying to lie flat or nearly flat. My CORE physician said these things usually clear up in a couple of weeks and go to Physical Therapy. After a couple of weeks there was no change. I went to EH PT with severe back spasms whenever trying to lie supine. Physical therapist had me do some movements and then required me to lie flat so "I could describe what I was experiencing." Told him I didn' t think I could do that because of the pain and I could describe it without demonstrating. He insisted on a demonstration. So I did. Had severe spasms and accompanying pain. (Looked roughly like a worm tossed on a hot pan.) He had me get up under my own power -- again excruciating. Then prescribed at-home exercises including bending from the waist, twisting side to side, lifting light weights with shoulder shrugs. Which I did (stupidly.) Another two weeks later, no improvement and have been sleeping upright in a chair for more than a month at this point. Finally smartened up and made an appt. with the osteopaths upstairs for an evaluation. First thing ordered was an x-ray. Ten minutes later back in the exam room looking at a vertebra compression fracture, the cause of the symptoms. Doc said absolutely do not do any stretching, bending, twisting, lifting. Cold cause further compression on your at 50 percent now. Prescribed immobilizing back brace for approx 12 weeks. Fortunately surgery was not required. I had previously heard that EH physical therapy had a bad reputation. I'm a sample of just one case, but I'll add my voice to that view. And, in addition to exactly the wrong advice and negligence of basic diagnostic protocol, the therapist was rude. I had the temerity to ask if massage might help. His curt response, "I'm not a masseuse, sir." Not an answer to what I was asking, but, from empirical evidence, he was accurate at least on that count. If he did perform massage I think he would have been a masseur, not a masseuse. Bottomline -- dangerous advice that could have worsened my injury from someone who should know much better coupled with confrontational communication. Amazing. I called the patient relations coordinator three times asking for a call back to discuss. Never got a call. At least the food service soup in the cafeteria is edible. read more

Horrible experience. ER grossly understaffed. Exceptionally long waits, and uncaring hospitalist and ER Director. This place is so overwhelmed they are setting up IVs in the waiting room! Go anywhere but Exeter ER. The Beth Israel Lahey medical system really sucks. Check out their Google reviews too. This has to be one of the worst hospitals in America. Shame on them. I usually don't write bad reviews but have to say something to warn others about this hospital! Went in for a study and the receptionist was abrupt and rude. Waited for an hour in the moldy waiting room, just to be told that the study was canceled because they did not agree with my doctor's order! They then rescheduled it the following day. I was relieved to have the study done but will never go back there because of this humiliating experience. read more

WARNING: Stay clear of EXETER HOSPITAL!!! I have had a horrible experience with Exeter Hospital that I want to share here so no one else has to go through this. My husband had Physical Therapy at the hospital. We checked with our insurance about coverage and were told that it was in network and there would only be a copay. However, after completion of the therapy, we received a large bill. When I contacted the hospital, I was told that they bill through the hospital and therefore it is subject to our hospitalization which is 80/20. Not at all what the insurance told us nor did they ever tell us this. I reached out and finally got them to agree that they would remove the diagnostic charge and I would only owe an extra $100 (not including the copay we had paid at each visit). I immediately paid the $100 and moved on. A month later, another bill arrived for the large amount with no reference to this arrangement they had made with me. I have been dealing with the hospital for the past year and they are refusing to make any adjustments to the bill. My mistake was I somehow misplaced the person's name that told me they would take off the diagnosis and took my $100 payment. After 12 months of arguing with them, they have refused to do anything to make good on what I was told. Beware that this hospital will tell you things and not honor what they say so keep copious notes of who you speak to. Because now I have to get my lawyer involved to fight for what was offered to me as a solution. I am so impressed with the customer service and overall business plan of this hospital. Everyone is very professional, friendly, and efficient. Probably should have went to a lawyer about this, but don't have the time or money. Long story short - went in for an endoscopy, wasn't properly anesthetized, and then they performed the wrong procedure on me!!! I will never go here again, most friends have advised me to take legal action, but I really can't add any stress to my life right now. Full story - I went in for an endoscopy (having my throat scoped) with complaints of constant acid indigestion. The goal was to have them look at my lower esophageal sphincter to determine if it was "loose", and causing excessive acid indigestion (if this were the case, it would change how they would go about treating my acid reflux). While at the operation, I remember the nurse was super nervous while trying to administer my IV ( in her defense, was apparently just a student/in training or something). The IV REALLY hurt, more than I remember as normal. Eventually, I was wheeled in for the endoscopy, they informed me that they were about to administer anesthesia, and I remember it being EXCRUCIATING!! They did the whole counting backwards routine, and then started moving me around/ hooking stuff up to me. They put this thing in my mouth to keep it open, and then when the doctor went to put the scope in, I started trying to yell, "guys I'm not awake yet, is this normal". The doctor jumped was visibly alarmed, and then they all seemed to panic. One nurse let me know that I should not have still been awake, and tried to comfort me. I learned from listening to their audibly panicked conversation that the nurse in training had stuck the IV straight through my vein, which is why the IV and anesthesia hurt so much. Eventually I was "out", but this experience, as shitty as it was, was not even as bad as my main grievance with exeter hospital.. I woke up to a nurse explaining to me that "the operation was a success, and the tumor they removed from my throat was not 'yet' cancerous". I was incredibly alarmed, I was there to have them look at my esophageal sphincter, not to have any sort of tumor removed. What's more, was she implying that I had cancer? Incredibly worried, I said "what tumor, and it's not cancerous YET?!" The nurse, visibly anxious, recanted "no, sorry, it's benign, meaning it's not cancerous". I asked her why the tumor was removed, and asked if she had any information regarding my esophageal sphincter". She again looked visibly worried, told me it would be "in the paperwork" and hurried away. Upon returning home and checking the paperwork, all that I could find was a vague report saying that a "tumor was removed", no mention of my esophageal sphincter. I called them to ask whether or not my esophageal sphincter was ok. after all, that is the WHOLE REASON I WENT. They first tried to say it was in the paperwork, I reas the paper work back to them, they then switched it up and said I should get a call from the doctor that performed the scope in two weeks. This call never came, I called back and they gave me the same runaround. Still never received a call. Later upon calling back, they said "I'm sure the doctor would mentioned it if your esophageal sphincter was loose, and it sounds like they went in for the scope, discovered the tumor and decided to remove it on the spot". Is that even legal? It sounds to me like some paperwork got mixed up and they performed the wrong operation. I never had a followup or explanation. I made another appointment with Core Physicians (who referred me to Exeter) in search of an answer, but they said they don't know, and I'd have to contact Exeter for an explanation. read more

Patient care and patient safety. Exeter Hospital. Autistic child was a patient at their pool therapy. During his session the therapist yank him by his legs moving his bottom several inches on the pool cement. She tried yanking his arms also and then followed him with a wet towel putting it over his head. This caused water in his eyes as well as trapped water for weeks in his ear causing on and off hearing loss. I filed a complaint about this and two months later they leave a prescription medication bottle in the shower with him. They have no regard for patient safety or concerns. Maybe there have been improvements to Exeter Hospital, but the scheduling line needs work. I was on hold for 10 minutes before being disconnected, and then 31 minutes before I hung up. No, my call is not important to you if I am waiting 31 minutes without being offered other options. I called between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. which are the normal business hours of operation. Here are other options that must be offered to anyone who is calling the scheduling line! Please adopt one or all of them! 1. First of all, the holidays are over, so change the recording. 2. Allow patients to leave messages. 3. Allow patients to leave a phone number for a call back where our place in line is respected. 4. Inform patients when the scheduling desk is closed, so we do not call during hours when it is closed. 5. Inform patients when the line is closed for lunch. It is inexcusable that anyone would have to wait that long on hold- hearing the same recording Please provide options so no one waits that long. DO NOT USE THIS HOSPITAL; the desk staff in the ER are cold, they have NO compassion/empathy. They leave you to be sick in the waiting room, which is humiliating; there is no overflow area, so you are out of luck. They will leave you in pain with a potential serious issue or even a cracked scull, for hours before even getting near imaging, never mind a physician. Not sure if its a staffIng issue or what the problem is - just do yours a favor: choose a different hospital. read more

Even though we were NEVER seen and left after 4 hours, I was told by the laughing lady at the front desk that we would definitely be charged because we saw a nurse for 5 minutes to take vitals and ask name/DOB. never saw another person for over 4 hours. I feel silly reviewing a hospital on yelp, but oh well. I went in at about 4-5am for severe stomach pain in January. It went away by the time I got there but still went in to try to find out what happened and make sure it didn't come back. The doctor was dismissive and rude, making me feel like an idiot for even coming in the first place. He asked me what I wanted him to do (idk YOU'RE the doctor). Said "if the pain is gone why are you even here". Left with nothing being done, and now am hit with an almost 1k bill. Man I wish I made that at my job for doing literally jack-all. read more

I do not recommend their Emergency Department. In 2020, I visited the ER three times (over the course of 48 hours) before anyone was willing to admit me, turned out I had Ischemic Colitis. In the hospital for four days. Just recently, I went back and found out I had an Ovarian Cyst. They said there was no rupture or torsion, despite the excruciating pain. They discharged me hastily. I told them the pain was so bad I couldn't move from the bed. A nurse joked, "and YOU'RE going to have a baby some day?" Turns out in a following ultrasound there was evidence of rupture. I went to Core Physicians OB GYN (at Exeter Hospital) for my follow up and they were also dismissive of my pain and confusing about what I should do if it happens again. read more

After being told all day we'd be able to see our daughter after she gave birth regardless of visiting hours we were abruptly told that we had to leave by the new nurse without explanation. Didn't get to meet our new grandson or check on our daughter to make sure she was ok after going through labor for nearly 12 hours. Do not go to the ER here. I was always happy with my care at Exeter Hospital until I had to use their ER. They use outside contract physicians which means that the doctor bills you separately. Worse, they do not disclose this information to you, so on top of the co-pay, you get an outrageous bill from the outside company. They sent me a bill and within less than a week of receiving it I got a phone call threatening to put it into collections. My insurance covers most networks yet this particular network isn't covered by a lot of insurances. This is a shady practice that some states have made illegal but it happens at Exeter Hospital still Update: my insurance covered my separate bill from the physician, yet EMP of Rockingham County is still putting my bill into collections claiming my insurance only paid half of it, despite that I have proof that they paid in full. It's unfortunate because I had a great experience when I had my baby here, but from now on I will not go near this place. THEY USE OUT OF NETWORK DOCTORS AND REPORT YOU TO THE CREDIT BUREAU EVEN IF YOU ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF APPEALING THE BILL. Stay far away! read more

My mom went to the ER there the end of May for a physical complaint. They know she's a patient of Seacoast Mental Health because she had been there before for psych issues. Here's what makes me very angry-you hear people go on and on about breaking the stigma of mental illness, but it appears the biggest perpetrators are medical providers. They told her that her physical problems were part of her delusions (they weren't-I tried to get her to come to the hospital near me so I could go with her but she was too sick to get here) so they had an employee from Seacoast Mental Health, a LCMHC who can't diagnose or order meds, require my mother to take the medication that was causing her physical problems then they discharged her on May 28th. She killed herself a few days later. She was told her physical problem was all in her head and then they made it worse. I understand why she felt helpless and hopeless. Deena Lewis, the one who decided my mom needed these meds, knew should have known that that medication was a problem. I really have no idea why a counselor was involved with medication and diagnosis. Are the ER doctors so incompetent they need a counselor to help them with a gastrointestinal issue? read more

Yeah that's gonna be a one star from me dawg. Recently have had to go here for physical therapy. and they scheduled me at one of their locations that are spread out nicely and local. After 4 sessions of PT I get a surprise bill in the mail, and Exeter hospital states I owe them hundreds of dollars. It's a surprise because I've already met my deductible for the year. I call my insurance, and find out they are billing the small office with only PT exercise equipment in it as an "Outpatient Hospital". It's certainly not a hospital, it's an office environment. But Exeter Hospital owns it, so they refuse to bill it out as an office environment for PT. So all in all, your PT becomes 3-4X MORE EXPENSIVE, because Exeter hospital wants to pretend one of their office locations for PT is an Outpatient Hospital. This was confirmed by their claims coordinator Emily - Exeter Hospital owns it, and yes they intentionally bill as Outpatient Hospital. DO NOT GET PHYSICAL THERAPY HERE. read more

If I could give it zero stars, I would. I've been in the health care field for decades, so I have had a wide range of both professional and personal experiences. Recently, I was battling a "mystery" illness and, unfortunately, due to the weekend, I had to go to Exeter Hospital's ER. I am able to filter out unusual circumstances that might cause a delay in being seen, but the waiting room had only a few people, yet we were being called individually by the same nurse. The ER there has many beds, so I have to assume that they're not properly staffed. I waited for hours, only to be told that it "could be" a certain condition. When I was placed in a bed, all I could hear 4 feet away from me were staffers talking about days off and where they grew up, etc. Following a lackluster effort by the doc to diagnose me, she went to get my discharge paperwork. I had my coat on and was sitting on the bed when "my nurse" introduced himself and asked for a urine sample! I told him that I was leaving and maybe he could talk to the doctor. I had seen a practitioner on Thursday and had tests that looked ok. However, I had to call on Friday for the results, as no one had called me. Since I was still experiencing worsening symptoms, I spoke to my GP's assistant late Friday afternoon and she suggested the ER. I was concerned about diverticulitis, so I didn't want to wait in case of infection. The atmosphere was grim and flat. The staff were unusually quiet, and no one smiled. Clearly, they were unhappy which is ironic because when faced with a medical emergency, one needs to interact with a sympathetic person. Every step in my experience was grueling, since I was in a fair amount of pain, yet I had to muster all that I could recall. The doctor had a flat affect and engaged in minimal questioning. I felt as though I had to present some kind of case that would spell out my diagnosis. I am thoroughly disgusted with the sub-standard care I received from Exeter Hospital's ED. I will never recommend it to anyone. Perhaps, Mr Callahan has lost touch with the details of decent, respectful and competent patient care. The ED is an abomination. read more

This is not a criticism of the doctors but their one size fits all policy of one person per patient without regards to the situation. This is July and I have been dealing with this since April and this concerns the patient (90) their spouse (87) and their daughter being able to accompany them in and with the doctor. All being vaccinated. Where is the common sense in this situation? Talked to their Patient Relations over three weeks ago while sitting in the car on a 95 degree day and got the response that they were meeting to review the policy, apparently just a lie to placate me, because as of today nothing has changed. I was rushed from my home to Exeter Hospital's emergency department in an ambulance in January 2022. I waited in a wheelchair for six hours and then was seen by a NP Sara Katz. N never in my life have I been treated as poorly in a medical setting as I was at Exeter Hospital by Sarah Katz she asked me what I was doing there I said that I came by ambulance could not walk on my hip as it was popping cracking couldn't walk on it & was popping and cracking and I had pain for a couple weeks and she dismissed me saying I was a pain patient and looking for narcotics she did not examine me there was no x-ray done no CAT scan no MRI she ended up sending me home with a walker she did not allow me to leave In a wheelchair we immediately went to Beth Israel in Boston emergency department I was seen within two minutes and I probably had 10 nurses and doctors working on me right away had a severe spontaneous hip fracture for unknown reasons I'm only 55 years old and the care I receive there was superior and so kind and they were so knowledgeable and they didn't treat me like a criminal do not go to Exeter Hospital ER is the worst and Sarah Katz should have her license taken away. I have insurance and received a Bill soon after from the Dr for her charges as I would expect. Fast forward to Jan and I receive a $300 bill from Exeter hospital for a facilities charge. What! The doctors at Exeter Hospital saved my husband's life last summer when he came in with a fully collapsed lung. He was immediately seen, x-rayed, and they had a tube in his chest within ten minutes of our arrival to the ER. He then stayed for about a week and ended up needing a second surgery, but has made a complete recovery. We are so grateful for the amazing doctors, nurses, and support staff at the hospital. Even the food was amazing! Within the past year we also took parenting and delivery classes, had a child there, and I recently ended up back in the hospital with a rare neurological disorder a few weeks ago. Came here because it is near my home. Did not have a very good experience. Came in at 8 p.m. with vomiting, diarrhea, back pain 8 out of 10 and fever of 100.2.. nurse gave me an antiemetic to stop the vomiting which worked temporarily but 3 hours later still nothing for pain. Blood on the bed side table from previous patient. Doctor came in and got after me for coming to emergency room stating that the ER was for emergencies. What the heck, it's Saturday night, I am in severe pain and have a fever. Just so unprofessional. Next time I will wait the extra hour and go to Elliot. At least they give a hoot there. read more

My mother was admitted through the ER on 11/6 for esophagus issues. She was unable to eat solids. They did some routine test which lasted a week. Found nothing wrong so they discharged her on 11/13. Still was unable to eat solids. On 11/15 she was readmitted for the same symptoms. No tests or measures were taken to help her symptoms until 4 more days lying in a bed. Loosing weight and on an IV only eating broth and jello. On 11/19 the Palliative care team was called in to help with her value of life. It was determined then that her symptoms could be all medicine released. I asked for another meeting on 11/21 when more relatives would be able to attend. We had a two hour meeting and came up with plan A,B & C. Plan A was to ween her off some of her meds in the next few days. Well, less than 24 hrs they discharged her throwing out all plans. She was discharged late afternoon on Thanksgiving 11/22. She was unable to fill her scripts due to the pharmacy closed on the holiday We were also told a visiting nurse would be at her home on 11/23. That never happen until 11/24 If you care about your loved ones do not let them stay there. Transfer ASAP Awful experience. read more

My 89 yr old , blind, mother arrived via ambulance after falling and breaking her upper arm. Service was very slow as she lay in a room in extreme pain. The nurse was taking care of at least 5 patients at a time. The 3 other people at the nurse's station didn't appear to be helping her at all. The Dr., after viewing the x-rays w/diagnosis of a broken arm thought she should go home, with the statement that someone would have to take care of her. I refused to bring her home; they admitted her, she stayed 4 days in the hospital and then 3 weeks in rehab. Needless to says the Dr was horrible, his lack of compassion or concern for her welfare was incredibly blatant. read more

Really annoying hospital. Went to core physician place which was on time. He was good but was concern on something so I brought my mom to the er at Exeter Hospital. It was 12:30 pm now it's 4:30 pm still counting. So bullshit. Then people came after us and they got to see the doctor before. Shit would hate to be in our death bed.
