Really annoying hospital. Went to core physician place which was on time. He was good but was concern on something so I brought my mom to the er at Exeter Hospital. It was 12:30 pm now it's 4:30 pm still counting. So bullshit. Then people came after us and they got to see the doctor before. Shit would hate to be in our death bed. We would have to wait to be seen. Hate this fucking hospital. Gets worst every time. Mean time we are in the waiting room breathing in sick people. Don't come here it sucks. Did I mention we are still waiting. read more

These people are crooks. I spent a good chunk of time getting a quote before an MRI and then the final bill came back 7X as much! Then, the billing bureaucrat had the gall to essentially call me a liar because her spreadsheet said they quoted me that amount originally. News flash: I would have skipped the MRI if I knew I was going to be billed nearly a year's tuition to the local private school! Meanwhile, the doctor who saw me prior to the MRI went on and on about visiting the 9/11 Memorial before I was to be stuck in a tiny, noisy machine with my own thoughts for 45 minutes. Great bedside manner, doc! Real comforting! Avoid this place like the plague. Even if you have the plague. read more

A year ago I showed up in the ER with a broken arm. This time I managed to tear a tendon in my knee. Once again, they were there for me and the result was exactly the same. Do the paperwork, get an x-ray, talk to a doctor, get stabilized, and find out what doctor to see next. And once again, I'm hanging out and waiting for things to heal themselves. Thanks again Exeter Hospital Emergency Room, but we have to stop meeting like this. read more

I was travel in the Coast area of NH (home Denver area) and went to the ER with severe leg pain and suspected sciatica. I lived in the Manchester area in the 1980's and called a friend who is a retired OBGYN in Manchester and asked what hospital I should go to. He suggested I not go to Portsmouth Hospital as they are a for profit and Exeter was not. I explained PA in the ER (10/10/18) that I had had about a 6 hour level 10 pain that I had never experienced before. Long history of lower spine problems. The PA who saw me concluded that I did have sciatica and suggested I take ibuprofen and rest. I suggest a Medrol dose pack (decreasing dose of steroids). The PA agreed. I asked about an MRI to determine any issue with my lumbar spine. I was told not called for. Eventually after a few days of rest I felt a bit better and made the car trip back to Denver. Upon return local physiatrist decided that an MRI was necessary. Turns out that 1 did have a new herniated disc at L-3 L-4. Currently being treated with spinal steroid injections and hoping surgery not necessary. Not sure why the MRI was not suggested or agreed to after I requested. I presented to them that if I were their parent how would he treat me. He did not engage with this comment and quickly continued with his diagnosis and treatment with the addition of the Medrol dose pack. The phrase 'practicing medicine' is reality and decisions are made based on past experience, which in this case, PA and backup MD rather than looking at the patient in front of them, perhaps made a decision that based on the last large number of patients, this is where I fit in. It was also suggested if I like to make an appointment with a local specialist. Very pleasant people at front desk, staff very easy, however, my sense from the PA that my problem not that important. Several of the ER rooms were occupied and could not tell if they were overloaded that evening. Net of experience, PA and back up doctor missed discovering my herniated disc. This review is not to disparage the ER, it is just a reminder to all to be involved in their heath and in this case I missed my mark and did not insist on an MRI. Perhaps the for profit hospital might have pushed for the MRI as more revenue. read more

I would give it a zero rating if possible I wish I could post a picture of myself and show what happened to me there 5 days ago. I was seen by an ER doctor with a very bad tooth infection and abscess. He wouldn't give me antibiotics or any medication to help. He used 3 blocker needles in my jaw and caused severe swelling in pain. Two of them broke in my jaw and my mouth and came out in pieces He didn't care about how I felt he didn't care what happened to me he told me that he's not a dentist and I should go somewhere else. So I did I went to Portsmouth Regional hospital and got admitted immediately and I'm currently admitted and being cared for correctly. If I had gone one more night my throat could have closed and I could have died in my sleep. Stay away from Exeter Hospital!!!!! read more

Don't go there. Had alot of issues with their billing department. Had an inaccurate charge of a couple hundred dollars on my bill. I talked to the billing department to resolve it, they said the won't do anything about it accept putting me on a payment plan. That wasn't the issue at all, the issue was the overcharge. If anyone else has had billing issue with them, please speak out. This shouldn't happen especially with everything going on. I feel like the billing department doesn't care about people at all. read more

I am going to keep this short and sweet. Exeter Hospital has had a lot of ups and downs but they have had so many great IMPROVEMENTS... Many of the staff are very seasoned in this establishment. You hear wonderful stories as to some of the Doctors but even more so it is the people who support all walks of life. This is a place that can has so many things going on but they maintain true to a tradition. I was a patient here a few times over the year of 2011 for some minor complaints. They were very accommodating. My first trip in was in the very early morning, I was at another hospital to be seen but they had me wait 3 hours and after waiting I looked at the pros and cons of traveling to another establishment. The Pros won and Exeter was there to help. They were quick, very accurate and beyond that THEIR BED MANNERISM was intelligent and impressive. They offered as much help as they could to my situation but they also provide a little more. When being discarded they provided me with information and a small direction. This was a great experience. I had to return a few days later in the afternoon because my situation had gotten a little worse and the information they had given me was still in motion. They quickly got me in and I was accompanied by my child which they also made her feel welcomed and no added stress or pressured feelings were felt. They worked very quick to get me out of their doors but no in the rush and pushy manner so many other hospitals have a tenancy to do. My end of year review! You guys have made many improvements and the improvements speak louder than the rumors! read more

Had an 8:15 Physical Therapy appointment today 7/21/20. When I arrived I was asked who my appointment was with. I didn't know the answer to that because I had never been told the who of the appointment. After much searching on the computer, I was told that my appointment had been changed to 9:15. I asked why I wasn't notified. I was told that I "should have been." I was then asked to go down a hall to another station and ask if I could be "fit in" for 8:15. I didn't come to PT today to be given assignments in getting an appointment. If the staff wanted to see if I could be "fit in" I would expect that they go down the hall to the other station to find out. All of my experiences at Exeter Hospital over 48 years living here reveal 2 things: they are slightly above average clinically and are just awful administratively. read more

If I could give a review of less than one star I would. This is the WORST EMERGENCY ROOM I HAVE EVER BEEN TO. I almost never say anything bad about nurses because my mother was one, but these nurses were totally MIA (couldn't find them) and when you did find then they were dismissive and downright rude. The exhibited NO compassion or empathy and never even responded to the alarms that went off constantly. The doctor seemed OK at the time, but my mother was misdiagnosed and has been walking around in excruciating pain for a week until she went to another ER when they diagnosed her correctly with a broken pelvis. If you care about yourself, your family and your friends you should tell them all to NEVER GO TO EXETER HOSPITAL. read more

In my younger years I didn't have health insurance but needed care urgently a couple of times and ended up staying in the hospital for a couple of days and built up a pretty good size bill. Because I don't make a lot of $$$ I chose to buy food instead of the hospital bill. A couple of days ago I had a workers comp issue and needed to get my hand/arm checked out. Getting through the ER was an issue besides the fact that they never put me in a room and the doctor never even took the time to write up the paperwork as workers comp. They also really rushed through the entire process and seemed as if they didn't really care. The real issues arose when they had referred me to the orthopedic dept. which is on the hospital grounds and I needed to get a MRI to look at the nerves/tendons. The orthopedic check in was one of the worst experiences of my life. They told me that because I still owed them $$$ from the past care that they would not see me until I payed $780.00. I told the lady at check in that this is workers comp and that the two are completely different issues. She continued to tell me that they didn't see it this way and that the orthopedic Dr. could see me for one visit but that would be all they would do. I told her that this was wrong and why would I go to get half the care I needed and then tell my company that they wouldn't continue care until I payed them a lot of money which I don't have. I feel this hospital has gone the wrong way in regards to caring for patients and making money. Now I don't know what to tell my boss in regards to this whole craziness. If you don't have insurance or even if you do I would stear clear of this place they don't care about people and only care about filling their pockets with your sweat, blood, and tears. read more

Took my son in for chest pains and arm pain. Waited at the emergency desk for 10 minutes before the girl came in and even asked why we were there. Then once they brought us in the room and did some initial tests they left us waiting for over an hour, I asked if the doctor was coming soon, they said yes, then I asked again after another half hour. Letting the nurse know that my son had school finals in 4 hours and a 40 minute drive home, if they didn't think it was an emergency then we would leave, he said the eeg and vitals all looked good but the doctor was looking at the information, so it was up to me wether we waited or not. After another half hour of no one even coming in to see us, we decided to leave and as we walked out we passed about 5 nurses/doctors all sitting in one area not looking very busy. Clearly they didn't think it was an emergency for my son, so why keep us there waiting for nothing. read more

I'd just like to take the time to throw some shade at Exeter Hospital for giving me the worst ER experience of my life. I went in on Saturday into Sunday night (march 9th-10th) for an abscess caused by my wisdom teeth. Upon being taken in I was asked "so whatre you doing here at 1am" to which I wanted to tell him that it was his job to be here and that I didnt need the attitude on my birthday. My mouth was in extreme pain and I was treated like I was faking it. I eventually got taken out back and then the " doctor" who looked about my age told me my mouth looked normal and sent me home with Valtrix (herpes medication) WHICH I DONT HAVE. I waited 5 hours after seeing the Dr. Just so he could discharge me with meds I didnt even need. Woke up the next day and my infection was 10 times worse. Not only did they give me the wrong medication they gave me a double dose of it. Overall a nightmare and I wouldn't even go back there if I was dying. Went to the dentist that monday and was immediately told I have an abcsess from my wisdom teeth and was given a perscription, which is all I wanted from the ER until I could see the dentist so I could help the infection. 8 years of med school and this doctor couldnt even recognize an abscess. Sorry about the rant but that place is awful read more

I have been going here for a number of years and the care was fine. Last weekend I went to the ER at the recommendation of my physician and was treated with no compassion. Condescending doctor, most painful blood draw of my life, and a 4 hour wait when the place was basically empty. Staff talked to me like I was an idiot and as if I was faking my issues. I will never go back. It would be easier and less humiliating to treat myself at home. read more

This is a consumer-focused review. In January 2019, I presented at Exeter ER at around 2:00 a.m. with severe pain in my lower back. Unbeknownst to me at the time, I was experiencing my first kidney stone. When I arrived, despite being delirious with pain, I asked the nurse at the check-in desk about a tiny placard that mentioned how Exeter uses an outside provider to staff its ER. This is increasingly common as local hospitals struggle to keep costs in check. Unfortunately, it results in higher and unexpected bills to consumers. The nurse moved the sign from view when I asked about it during my visit and said I didn't have to worry about it--a factually inaccurate statement. My visit was rather unremarkable but excruciatingly slow. The nicest person I met was the ultrasound technician. The doctor on staff was only with me for a few minutes. Honestly, I spent most of my visit balled up in pain and trying to sleep. I left 8 hours after I arrived with nothing to show for it except instructions to drink water. Three months later, I got the bill from the ER staffing firm, US Acute Care Solutions. I paid right away as I knew how these companies are ruthless when it comes to collections. I know many visitors to this hospital cannot pay $1,000 surprise bills like the one I got. Honestly, most of this isn't Exeter Hospital's fault. I plan to help them out not by running in road races or anything so asinine; instead, I'm going to vote for candidates who want to nationalize our healthcare system so we can join the rest of the industrialized world in delivering healthcare without the headaches. I think that'll take care of most of these one-star reviews, too. #singlepayer read more

Want to know what it feels like to be in a U.N. refugee camp? Try finding yourself in the Emergency Waiting Room at this hospital. The service was absolutely abysmal! I waited SIX HOURS to see a doctor in their waiting room to see a doctor while in excruciating pain, and when I finally saw a radiologist and told her that I cant wait anymore and need to see a doctor, her response was indifferent to my plight. The closest I got to any care was going back and forth three times in the examination room for some random test, then shuffled out to the waiting room to wait some more. Hell, the first nurse who gave me an EKG (I had 2 during my visit for some strange reason) left the sticky pads on me after disconnecting the probes AND DIDNT EVEN BOTHER TO REMOVE THEM!There were other people who were there several hours with no attendance from a physician who left as well. I get that sometimes the wait times in ER can be timely, but when there was only five people in the room, that's totally unacceptable. I expected more out of a premiere hospital such as Exeter Hospital, and was left totally dissatisfied with their level of "care" I was scheduled for two upcoming procedures next month which I have since cancelled because of this. I feel their professionalism was sorely lacking and the nurses seemed some inclined to stuff their faces with take out food that was delivered rather then doing their jobs in a courteous manner. read more

The emergency room experience I had the other night was an absolute nightmare. It's too bad the emergency room doesn't take it's lead from the rest of the hospital itself. I've had three knee surgeries there in the last three years and the outpatient surgery staff is awesome. Now back to the ER, again another knee injury, after a four hour wait with possibly ten to twelve people in the waiting room I was finally seen, actually I was taken to another room and was left in there for another hour, my knee swollen like a watermelon, not even offered an ice pack by the nurse who brought me to the room! Finally a nurse practitioner came in to attend to me, once she saw my history of knee surgeries and looked at my knee she knew I was in trouble. All she did was touch my knee at which point my reaction was almost to swing on her! She then said and I quote "yeah, something is wrong in there, you should follow up with your orthopedic surgeon and see what he says"! I know they can only do so much for a knee injury but come on something more than there's something wrong in there is warranted after a five hour wait. But it gets better, The NP writes me a script for ibuprofen and tells me to stay off my leg until I see my Dr. I had to stop her from leaving the room and ask her for something a little stronger than aspirin seeing how it was a Friday and wouldn't be able to see my Dr until Monday. She begrudgingly wrote me a script for 15 Vicodin like I was some kind of strung out druggie looking for pills. It gets even better, the nurse comes in with my discharge paperwork and a knee immobilizer, he puts it on me and then tells me how important it is to stay off my leg with no weight bearing until I see my Dr on Monday and then tells me I'm all set to go and walks out leaving me there with no crutches or wheelchair to make it out to the parking lot where my wife is waiting so I have to walk out in my own, weight bearing an all as I'm leaving I pass the same nurse who has the balls to tell me to make sure I don't put any weight on the knee as he sees me walking with no crutches! What a joke! I'll never go to that ER again, ever read more

My parents moved to Exeter eight years ago from the Boston area. My dad was seen by several different doctors over a five-year period and was constantly misdiagnosed (lose weight, get exercise). It wasn't until he saw his condition highlighted on the Today Show that he had any idea what was wrong with him (ideopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a hardening of the lungs that is only curable with a lung transplant if diagnosed early enough). By the time he saw a doctor at Exeter Hospital who had a clue, it was too late. He had a lung biopsy at Exeter Hospital where, I believe, contracted Guillain-Barré syndrome ("an acute polyneuropathy, disorder affecting the peripheral nervous system ... It can cause life-threatening complications, in particular if the respiratory muscles are affected .... The disease is usually triggered by an infection," see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guillain%E2%80%93Barr%C3%A9_syndrome for more information). We finally convinced him to go Brigham Women's Hospital in Boston (because his Exeter doctor didn't think there was anything else wrong with him), where they diagnosed the Guillain-Barre syndrome and confirmed that he was in the final stages of pulmonary fibrosis. Sadly, Dad died at age 66, two months after being diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis and didn't have a fighting chance because he was misdiagnosed for four years. Moral of this story: At best, Exeter Hospital is only effective for very minor injuries or illnesses, and always follow up with doctors from Portsmouth or preferably Boston. DO NOT EXPECT TO RECEIVE THE BEST CARE AT EXETER HOSPITAL. read more

Not great for some things. It depends on who the doctor is.Sometimes it's hard to visit someone in the ER,even if you know what room they are in,you need to go through security and that sucks because they question who you are and your relationship to the person, which is none of their business.I liked it when we could just walk in and go to the room not wait for security to open up a door for you and call to see if it's ok first before they open the doors.Guess that guy who shot his wife really made it difficult for us now to get in to visit our loved ones. Not good with heart issues. They are bad.Save a trip and wasted time and Go to Portsmouth or Anna Jacques instead. read more

Unfortunately, my wife contracted breast cancer and were steered initially by the Manchester VA to get care at Exeter Hospital. They acted sure of it all so arrogantly with a big ceremonial introduction of the key players. "All cancer services are delivered with the individualized care and compassion Exeter Hospital has been nationally recognized for providing to its patients." Sad.... Not only did the oncologist in charge of everything possibly allow the spread of the cancer to other parts of her body but as she got sicker from more of it rooting in her stomach area this oncologist refused to sign the papers giving her work place permission to provide her paid leave. That very next day from that refusal, I drove her to the emergency room at the Manchester VA where they transferred her flickering life light away to a related VA facility in MA. After her release from weeks of care there we never returned to Exeter Hospital. She has had to live off of IV nutrition for quite a some time. Currently, she has chemo treatments ongoing. I am shocked by the downhill trek of this hospital since I had my daughter here in 1988. In 30 years it has declined from a state of the art, sparkling example of best practices to a third rate disappointment. I recently visited a family member several times over the last couple of weeks and found the facility to be dirty and worn to the point where the rugs should be replaced, the walls painted, and the windows cleaned from top to bottom. It doesn't end with the physical plant. The patients are stuffed into double rooms with but a few singles. This would be OK if problems with a roommate were taken seriously. My relative had the unfortunate experience of being paired with a woman who was suffering from a psychiatric disorder that impacted her behavior to a point where she interfered with the peace and well-being of those around her. This poor woman needed more services than the hospital offered. She would wake up screaming during the night and would wet her bed. This would cause an alarm to go off and the lights to go on. This screaming-lights-nursing went on throughout each night--ALL night. There are private rooms yet they put her in with other patients. The woman prior to my relative had already moved out after complaining. We had to complain five or six times and take it to another level of staffing entirely in order to get them to listen. Finally, after being exhausted and stressed, my relative was moved after three nights of this. After my relative was moved we thought things would be better. Well, if I did not advocate for her, she still would not be receiving the sleeping pill the doctor had promised and would not have an understanding of her pain medications. The only time a nurse came by was to check BP or to announce a shift change. It appears that many patients are admitted via the ER and many for conditions that another hospital would chose not to admit for. Just curious if anyone else has experienced this (I used to work in admin in a hospital). In any event, I would strongly urge you to bypass Exeter Hospital if possible and go instead to Portsmouth Hospital. They are much more restrictive as to what conditions they admit for, and for how long, but the place is much cleaner and much better with patient care. Pros: The hospital operator is a sweet heart and always efficient. The patient representative actually intervenes when necessary. There is ample disabled parking. The Cancer treatment facility has just merged with Mass General Hospital--this is a big step in the right direction for this hospital and I will keep my eye on any changes that this union brings. read more

"FAST TRACK" Just another attempt for the Exeter Hospital to disguise and pass on high ER Costs to the public. After hearing radio advertising and reading the following on their web site I . "Fast Track The triage team will direct patients with minor emergency needs to Fast Track, a new division of the ED specifically structured to care for less serious symptoms. This helps reduce wait times for patients with minor illnesses or injuries. Fast Track is available for patients seven days a week from 11:00 am - 9:00 pm, when the ED is most busy, and minor emergency needs can be treated in the main ED at any other time. Some of the more common conditions that can be treated in Fast Track include stitches, eye/ear/tooth pain, colds and flu, sprains/fractures/dislocations and head injuries/concussions. Patients in Fast Track have access to the full ED and hospital services should their condition worsen" If I had been advised that I would have been charged regular Emergency Room out of pocket expenses $250.00. Went through hell and back watching my father die of stage 4 lung cancer. No one at this hospital showed any sympathy or even pretended that they cared through this long emotional roller coaster. The kicker was close to the end when we met with the hospice and palliative care doctor to get set up to go home with hospice.. The doctor walked in and called my father and myself different names! I could not believe this had happened. He had a side kick next to him that had come into our room.. some big fat 400lb. RN named Rosemary. I had asked them to explain the different options we had to choose from regarding hospice. Rosemary looked right at me, laughed in my face and said, "He's not going to remember anything, he doesn't need to hear the options." I don't think I need to say anymore, but at this hospital the doctors and nurses do not care about you or your family, you are just a number and they are just collecting a paycheck on Friday. If you ever have to go through this with a family member, it is the hardest thing in your life you will ever go through and you need support. Being an only child and having no one in this world but my dad I looked for support from Exeter Hospital and that was a big mistake.
