In past…read moreyears, I've gotten lazy and my hair has suffered, not to mention my recent hormonal changes with the addition of my daughter. I heard about Tamika through a black hair care forum and she is very educated when it comes to naturally curly hair. I had to wait for months after first contacting her just because of timing and life events but was finally able to make an appointment at her studio. I am almost fully gray (started at 11 yrs) and I live my hair color so e just focused on my hair health. We spoke first, about what my expectations are and what regimen I use. We went over everything, from products to schedules and how I style my hair at home. She started the process and went over everything that she was using, why she was using it and what it would do for my hair. She meticulously styled my hair and cut it into a shape that fit me and while it was a bit overwhelming, the look was already growing on me by the time we finished. The whole time, we talked like we were old friends because she's very personable. This was, by far, one of the best salon experiences I've ever had. She told me what I need to do at home to maintain what she's started in the salon. She emailed the products that she used so that I can recreate the styling process at home. I'm thankful for her time and dedication to the craft. A stylist can only give you the tools to assist you in your journey. You have to put in the effort to maintain so that you're successful at reaching your desired outcome. This is not the place to go if you have unrealistic expectations or if you're looking for a cheap do. You're paying for education and instruction on how to achieve greatness.

I was struggling with getting definition from my wash n go or as she calls it "curl definition set". We went over technique and products. Best decision I've ever made was to go to her! As of recent, I received the taming treatment and my hair is so much more manageable. It's amazing! My natural hair is healthy and colored. My coily hair loves to be caught up in itself, and the treatment has loosened them just a bit making it easier to detangle and style. My hair is still curly and can be worn straight with less work! I have been going to Sister Aminata for about 7 years now and I am never disappointed!…read more They are located across the street from Old Navy, ALL the way up the stairs. I don't get braids as often as I used to, but they always do a great job. They braid faster than most African hair braiding shops which is a huge plus for me because I hate sitting for too long. I like that they are not rough with your hair and know how to work with all hair textures. When I first started going there, I was still getting perms. After I stopped perming my hair, I was worried that the braids would hurt and that my braids wouldn't look fresh. I have 4C hair and I am tender headed, but they are gentle. If there is more than one person working on your hair (usually not more than two), they are aware of that and aren't just pulling your hair in different directions at the same time. Back when I used to get sew-ins, this was my go to place, because they know how to blend your natural hair with your weave. I have gotten everything from sew-ins to box braids here. During the summer, the AC is on and during the winter the heat is on, so it's never uncomfortable. The shop is kept clean, they are sweeping the hair off the floor throughout the day. There is enough people there that speak English, so you'll always be able to communicate exactly what you want. I would suggest trying to make an appointment even if its the day before, so that you're not waiting around all day when you get there.

Based on how long I've heard it takes to get braids in, I was expecting to be there all day - but I opted for medium Senegalese twists and it took a little over 4 hours! I had a total of 3 ladies work on my hair, 1 at a time - not all at once as I've heard is common. They were all nice and friendly and chatted to each other, not so much the customers, which was fine. The space was air conditioned, which I appreciated in this summer heat and I was perfectly happy reading my book the entire time. My scalp is relatively tender and was extremely tight afterward but in a day or two loosened up nicely. Now, 2 weeks in, I'm looking forward to trying out different styles with my gorgeous Senegalese twists!

I HAVE A BALD SPOT IN MY HAIR FROM TRAVIS. DO NOT BOOK WITH HIM!…read more I booked an appointment for a sew in. The entire time I am there he is upset and handling my hair very rough. He washes my hair rushed, conditioned my hair for 10 seconds and immediately rinses it out. I eventually tell him that he is handling my hair very rough and ask to just give me a blow out so I can leave. He says sorry, he's just upset about other things and he wants me to get the style I came in wanting. So against by better judgement I stay. Then he braids my hair way too tight. And I told him to loosen up the braiding, but it was still unbearably tight. Now, I am taking the style out and I have a bald spot on my scalp with a scab from where my hair was ripped out. Please do not to to this stylist. Even before I noticed the bald spot, I told myself I wasn't coming back to this salon because of how rough and angry seeming he was. After going for relaxer touch ups I started to experiment with wearing extensions and went form having a few tracks added to a half weave to a full head weave with a closure. I've also had Florence put braids in at times. In 2015 I decided to stop getting relaxers and started to transition to natural by continuing to wear weaves and then a custom wig that Flo made for me. The transition process was so smooth and easy, I didn't even really notice it. I maintained my hair at home by washing and conditioning it with the weave in and continued to go to Flo every 10-12 weeks for a new weave. In December 2017 Flo made me a custom wig and I wore that until May 2018 when I started to wear my natural hair out. Now that I am natural, I still go to Flo for trims and to make sure my hair continues to grow healthy and strong. If anyone is contemplating going natural, but doesn't want to do a big chop, I would definitely recommend transitioning while wearing protective styles and slowing cutting off the relaxed hair and hot new growth comes in. In addition to being a well rounded hair stylist, Florence is also an amazing wig maker. She made a wig for me that I love. My custom made wig does not even begin to compare to the wigs sold in the beauty supply stores I highly recommend Florence. She is warm and loving and her shop is nice and clean and everyone that works there is very nice and friendly.
