I have been a client of Excel for many years. While they are good at equipment repair and replacement, the weekly maintenance is bad. When they clean the filter, rather than have the debris go into a portion of the yard that will not damage anything (there is an open dirt space 2 feet away) they clean on the pea gravel pathway into the yard which is also a dog run. Every 4 weeks I clean up and remove debris and add new pea gravel. I finally complained and the response was a big so what. I can't imagine anyone would want that debris dumped on the pathway to the yard. Once brought to their attention you would think they would apologize and make it right- no way. response was "your pool needs the filter cleaned every 4 week because it gets dirty fast" ok - that has nothing to do with the issue blame the client. not a good company to deal with. read more

Louis was great! Our pool heater wasn't receiving power and he trouble shot and fixed it within half an hour. He was very knowledgeable given his 40 years of experience and very thorough, even double checked his diagnosis doing various tests to confirm. Where do I begin? for years their pool man (Manny) has been spitting and dumping dirty all over my house. Until recently, I finally caught him dumping dirty water back onto my pool pumps and equipment. When I called him out I told him to stop and clean in and to never do it again. The next week I caught him spitting in my pool. When in confronted him he tried acting like he didn't and then proceeded to dump dirty water back onto my pool pumps. That was the last straw and we finally got someone to replace him. Unfortunately they gave us a guy just as unprofessional. Yesterday the pool man tried squeezing himself in between two of my cars which scratched severely the sports car. From spitting and dumping crap all over my house to destroying my property these people will leave you disgusted! read more

Not only that my old service asked me to pay a lot of extras such as pay for extra chemicals. Excel is fair and very reasonable in their charges and recommendations. Our spa stopped working so I called Excel. They were able to come out and look at it right away, which was very helpful. They opened it up and found a pair of swim googles stuck inside. Once removed, the spa worked well again... until I tried to refill it. Suddenly it wouldn't hold water at all! I was worried that it could have been broken when it was taken apart, so I called Excel again. They understood my concern and came right back out to make sure that the problem wasn't related to their work. It wasn't. It turned out that I had jostled loose a tube during my attempt to refill the spa. Excel showed me the evidence and then helped repair the damage. Thanks, Excel! read more

The best pool service in the business!! We've been working with Tom and the Excel team for over ten years. They do a great job week to week of maintaining our pool and hot tub. They also give expert advice on how to manage it, maintain our (older) equipment and keep things running smoothly. Excel is incredibly responsive, cost efficient and reliable. When something shut down on a Sunday morning, right before our daughter's pool party, Tom the owner came out himself (within moments of my email) and got everything running smoothly again. We have used Excel since buying our first house (with a pool) in Los Altos back in 1992. In 1999 we moved to Los Altos Hills into a house that had a pool and spa, with a computer-based control in the house. The pool/spa has fairly complicated plumbing with remote controlled diverter valves, along with a heater, and we've had a number of issues over the years. Excel is as good as it gets when it comes to great service. Their office is well run, so scheduling a tech is never a problem, and when you really need urgent service they do whatever they can to come out as quickly as possible. I like to request Ben, who is a very friendly guy, but also really great at what he does. He came out today to clear a filter line I had clogged up from vacuuming leaves into my filter basket, but while he was out here repaired the remote control wires that rats had chewed through and causing havoc with my remote. I like to clean my pool/spa myself, so I can't comment on their maintenance services, but for repairs, I don't think you will find a better business than Excel. read more

The times when I have needed a repair or replacement of my equipment, Excel has provided options to consider and discusses pros and cons. I am a first-time hot tub owner and have started maintenance with Excel because they serviced the hot tub for the prior owner. Some of the people in the office are very helpful and they did a good job on the initial cleaning. However, the hot tub was never hot. When they sent someone out to turn on the heat and said it was done, we never noticed a difference but they charged us and continued to service the hot tub. Now I feel unfairly charged for services and have yet to use my hot tub after 2 months of service. I am stopping service. It's fair to pay them for the initial cleaning, but I don't understand why they would continue to service the tub when I told them multiple times that the heat wasn't working. One person at the office told me that the first person I told hadn't forwarded the message so they didn't know there was an issue, but that's not my fault. read more

I had a leak in my Fafco solar heating panels and called another pool repair company, who was too busy to come quickly. Excel replied promptly to my request for quotes and I called to set up a service appointment for the next day. Ben arrived and quickly made the repair to the solar water heating panel and then also fixed an issue with my skimmer. He said he's been fixing pools for 30 years and it shows. He quickly diagnosed the issues, fixed them, explained things to me, recommended vendors for issues he couldn't address and was pleasant in our intersections. Prices seem reasonable. I will definitely call them the next time I have an issue with my pool. read more

Pools repair experience kept getting worse and worse. Came across Excel pool on Yelp after I had a bad experience with the previous company. In the beginning the lady was nice and all and time setup was easy, thought few weeks after when it came the repair, things were just bad. The person who came here spent a great deal of time attempting to fix my pool; he diagnosed the problem with my pool and took off my pool timer and wanted to replace it with a new one. After he was gone to buy the new parts, the front desk lady at Excel pool called me and said that they cannot finish repairing my pool because they diagnosed the problem incorrectly and they actually don't have the expertise to solve problems like mine. Apart from that, after they screwed up my timer parts, they didn't want to bring my old parts back, and planned to just leave it as it is. For some reason, they thought not charging me in the end would make things better for their incapability of Fixing my problem after few weeks of waiting. Another thing that was out of my conscious mind was the attitude of the lady who spoke to me about this. Her attitude was really bad and was annoyed that I demanded them to come back with my old parts and putting my old parts back to where it was after they took it off and told me they can't fix it. I almost lost it when she said with a really annoyed and bad attitude, "ok sir what do you want us to do, what do you suggest we do". When there have​ been occasional technical problems, the office staff is very responsive to my calls and works to address any issues on a timely basis. I have been having a bunch of problems with my pool, such as a poor-functioning filter, high stabilizer levels and pool turning green. I inadvertently contacted Excel Pool & Spa via Yelp's messaging system (through the part where Yelp sends the same message to multiple similar businesses). Susie replied to my message and despite they didn't service my area, she gave me lots of good advice, and even spent an hour talking on the phone with me in order to resolve my problems (on a Saturday!!). She was very nice, experienced, knowledgable, and despite the fact that I couldn't be their customer, she still told me that I could call her if I needed to. My initial contact with Excel Pool & Spa was excellent. The lady on the phone couldn't have been nicer in helping me set-up our account and telling me what day the service occurs. However, it's all been downhill from there. I happened to be home during one cleaning session and realized that the pool person doesn't actually clean the pool unless we take the cover off for him. So, for three weeks in a row, the pool guy had been showing up and simply checking the chemicals. Interestingly, the maintenance charge is the same regardless of whether or not he cleans the pool. Nobody bothered to mention the cover situation to me when we set-up the account and had I not been home to see this, the pool would've remained uncleaned. When I phoned Excel to discuss this, I had a much different experience on the phone. I spoke with a different lady this time who seemed pretty annoyed that I had bothered to call to understand what was included in our monthly service. When discussing the cover situation, she explained to me that it's difficult for the pool person to remove the cover himself as it's not on a reel (due to the unusual shape of our pool) so I needed to do that for him if I want the pool cleaned. Interestingly, it's also difficult for me to remove the pool cover but I have managed to do this each week before his weekly visit. I guess he doesn't have as much experience with pool covers as I do..... Aside from that, Excel has now moved to emailed billing statements, which is awesome. I hate paper bills. What's not awesome is that to pay your bill, you need to call Excel (as luck would have it, I got to speak to Miss Unfriendly two times in a row!) and pay by credit card (no AmEx and no bank account linking). Excel will allow you to maintain a card on file though so they can charge you automatically. Convenient, huh? My final issue with Excel is that the pool person put in some extra strong chemicals last week (likely due to the lack of cleaning during the prior weeks when I "left" the cover on). It's great that he added the needed chemicals. What's not great is that he didn't leave a note and Excel didn't send an email, so my kids jumped right into the pool that afternoon and came right back out with burning eyes and skin. I only realized what had happened when I received my emailed invoice for the additional pool chemicals used. I called Excel to ask if they could notify me when this happens so that I can keep the kids out of the pool but as luck would have it, I caught Miss Unfriendly for a 3rd time and she told me they never put chemicals strong enough to warrant a 24 hour waiting period from the pool. With all the competition in this space, I'd strongly suggest using a different company who is actually interested in customer service. read more

I've used Excel for many years and they have always given excellent service, a couple of years ago I bought a new pool pump from them. After just coming back from an extended vacation, I saw that my pool pump and pool sweep weren't working, so I called Excel; they tried to walk me through with instructions on how to get things running but I didn't have any success. Tom, the owner, said he would be out to check within the hour. After Tom got here he discovered that the electricity had gone off while I was gone and everything just needed to be reset. He reset the system and showed me what to do if the electric goes off again. Even with driving out to my house, spending time to get things set again, he didn't charge me, which is pretty unheard of these days. Excel Pool & Spa has provided us with excellent service and very useful tips on maintaining our swimming pool for over 10 years now. The owner himself has also dropped by on occasion to check on a possibly more serious problem. In one instance, I had called to ask if Excel could install a new cover motor for me as I thought the existing one was broken. He stopped by to check on the problem and found after a bit of tweaking that the motor was not broken. This saved me a large replacement cost. Most recently, we decided to ask them to try to correct a longstanding problem we had with the jet action in the spa. They really worked hard to finally discover that the underground plumbing had been set up incorrectly by a leak detection company while doing repairs. This company is excellent! The tech who comes each week, never misses and keeps my pool crystal clear! My tech, Marco? alerts me if a small part is broken, the pool needs water or any small needs by leaving notes on my front door. I had a previous pool company and felt that they were inflating prices for minor fixes and always trying to get me to buy new products. Excel's maintenance prices are competitive and I love that they contact me for my approval if they need to fix anything over $50. One time after I had a party the pool looked slightly cloudy due to 30 people swimming. Excel came out that day and added chemicals. The best part is that there is a live office receptionist who answers the phone. She is knowledegable and proactive. Usually she gets someone out that day to remedy any small concern. I love that I actually talk to someone and don't leave a message. I recommend them with absolutely no reservations and wish every company operated as they do! read more

I have had Excel Pool as my pool service just about since they began. Over the years they have replaced my pool filter and heater and have done all of my pool maintenance. The three words that best express my experience with Excel are Fair, Competitive and Honest. They do a great job at a fair price and are absolutely trustworthy. Our weekly maintenance have kept our pool clean and sparkling and a constant invitation to our grandkids (and our kids) to come up for a swim. When a problem does arise they are on it immediately.
