We hired them last…read moreyear to help with our rather complicated taxes that were split between several states, and the entire process has been filled with multiple errors and over looked details. They failed to file important paperwork from another state which resulted in a penalty letter from the IRS. They asked for more paperwork from us, and we sent it but one important piece didn't make it to them and they never followed up asking for it. Now we've received our 2nd IRS warning, and I'm livid that they let the mistake slip through the cracks. I don't pretend to be good at things like this which is why we hire professionals to help with the process. The lack of follow up to the missing document is a failure of due diligence from the company. It's also the first time we've ever had anywhere from 4-6 (maybe more?) people working on one return. Who was responsible for our account? I still have no idea, and I recommend you find someone else this tax season. Editing to add: The company blamed us for their mistake then insinuated that they would not help us unless we took down our bad review. We ended up not having to pay the fine (we had a federally accepted reason to delay filing), and it was because of their mistake that we received the fine. We easily fixed the issue with the IRS directly since the company was unwilling to do the work we paid them thousands for.

I decided to give it a try given that my previous year's experience with H&R Block was not the best. I must admit that I did worry that the cost of gas out to San Marcos might outweigh my refund but phew! It did not. Kim was fantastic. He not only plugged my numbers in but he also told me what those numbers were. He then sent me home to find additional documents that would potentially bump up my return. And they did! The cost to file with Southside was reasonable and almost half of what H&R Block had charged...hooray!

Getting into their online system, I would get repeat requests to sign up even though I was already in. I also required a special two factor authentication. This would get annoying. Once I got a bill, I got emails at 2am asking for payment. This was also unnecessary. The worst part was advising me on what to do in the case of a marriage separation. Not only did I end up owing so much I had to deplete my emergency fund, but I had to pay 3k to learn that. I was asked once about my filing status and dependencies without being told how devastating it could be if that changed. In addition, they filed an extension, and I now owe interest and penalties. Yes, life changes mean financial hardship. But I was not properly advised and this ended up being the worst experience I've ever had with a CPA.

They made some fundamental mistakes, ei. SS#'s wrong, addresses wrong, and this information the family gave them in August '07. They were extremely slow in completing the work. They very, very, very rarely returned our calls, even thou we left numerous messages on their business answering machine. It got to the point that we would call every day for a month or two. Sometimes we would call in the morning and then that same day in the early or late afternoon. Nobody ever answered the business phone. Some times we would not hear from them for months!! The forms the surviving family members needed to fill out their 2008 IRS taxes was received over a month after the Federal Government's due date, which made our personal IRS filing very stressful. I can not tell you the stress our family had from this super slow non-communicative CPA firm. Their bill?? It reflected the minimal amount of time they put into getting the job completed. BUT that job took soooooo long to complete. I'd go else where if you want a CPA to do a timely finished work.
