Putting together a new music project isn't an easy deal. Assuming you've got a concept or some song ideas to start with, you then need to find that perfect blend of personality and skill in your prospective band mates. You've gotta carve time out and teach your ideas to those folks, learn any material they have, and get past that initial disappointment that it 'doesn't sound exactly the way I wrote it.' The drummer is going to argue with the lead singer. The bassist is going to chill out in the back and barely say anything. And everyone's going to ignore the keyboardist. :P And if you're putting together a project that requires more than just a couple acoustic instruments, you're going to need a place to gather where you can be as loud as you need. Not having to drag a lot of equipment around is a big plus as well. Avoid a hernia? Yes please! Enter Evolution Studios. They're not going to write your material or provide easily adaptable musicians who play everything just the way you need it. But they are going to provide rooms with amps, speakers, PA including mikes, and a drum kit. All you need is your cables, instruments, sticks and cymbals. You might want to bring ear plugs too; I don't know about you but I don't want to be deaf too early. Their main office has strings for sale, as well as a vending machine with some sodas and chips. Just keep your drink off the amps; loud vibrations tend to knock things over. As Sara R. wrote, you may want to bring your own mike, or at least a mike cover. I don't know about you, but when I sing I tend to close my eyes and lose track of where the mike is. I've nailed my teeth on the mike several times. When you have a good look at a microphone up close, you suddenly realize that someone's Taco Bell is gracing the outside of this thing, and getting grossed out isn't conducive to a good jam. One more thing: try to reserve a room in advance. We've lucked out and gotten a space same-day, but for the most part their rooms are booked in advance. read more

Like my favorite dive bar, Evolution Studios doesn't open till 6pm. And just like my favorite dive bar, its better to drink there than at home. And just like Evolution Studios, its better to rehearse there than at home. Located just down the way from Donn Bennetts Drums is a glorious lined gear rehearsal studio where future (and old) Rockstars come alive! You've done the hard work, wrote the music, found pre-rehab band mates and its time to pull it together. This is where it begins. Call Evolution Studios, speak with Eden and set up a block of time to practice. I don't personally use these studios (you can only scream THE ACE OF SPAAADES into a mic so many times). You must be asking yourself, what does she know? Ahh, child... my little brother skips singing from mountain tops to bust out his jams here. As a supportive sister, I shuttled him to and from here for years. The best part, was Eden provided drums (nice ones at that) so all he needed to lug with him is his cymbals. It has been a while since I've been here, but I felt I should put in the good word. When you are in-between practice spaces this place is a great affordable option. Quite a few rooms equipped with an average PA, drum set, and amps so you can get going quickly. The guy running the joint is very nice, courteous and willing to help you tweak the PA if needed. Rooms aren't fully soundproofed, but they are about as good as any true practice space I have been in. The bigger room has mini stage and couch that may be cool for a faux-video shoot. All in all a good place for bands in transition. Rates are very reasonable vs. monthly rates at prac space. read more

Evolution Studios is hands down, the best practice space I've used. The owner is friendly, helpful, and extremely supportive of all the bands that come through. I've been going here for over two years and am always impressed by the quality of gear (new drum kits in all rooms now), PA system, mic's and even spare equipment if you casually forget to pack cables or even your guitars! The price is great and affordable and extremely convenient for rehearsing at loud decibels so you don't have to piss off your neighbors. Some really cool bands come through here as the owner has provided a great service to our local music scene for many many years. Highly recommend this place to all in need of a rehearsal space. I've been coming to Evolution for just about 5 years now, and don't really see a reason to go anywhere else The owner, Eden is completely accomidating and helpful. He provides all the heavy gear which makes it much more fun to go to pracitice. The rooms sound great and really give you a feel for how you would sound on stage. The hourly rates are good too and make it easy to switch different days and times depending on your schedule. Can't recommend this place enough! read more

It was definetly much better when we practiced at my house. I could walk across the hallway in my pajamas, practice vocals for like 30 min, then go watch tv until practice was over. Or just go to sleep. Now we have to practice at a studio. Pay each time we practice, schedule time, and drive to bellevue. For a practice space evolution isn't bad. Its reasonably priced, at like 12 an hour or so, which isn't bad split 5 ways. They provide you with a not too crappy drum kit and guitar cabs. So you just have to bring the stuff that's important, cymbols, heads, guitars. Oh, and I personaly highly recomend bringing your own mic cause I have no clue who spit all over these ones earlier today. They keep the drums tuned and the cabs in good shape. The pa's are adequit for the space. All in all if you have to go somewhere to practice this is an ok place. One bad thing... you have to hear all sorts of other awful bands practice while you wait :( read more

Hands down my favorite place to rehearse in the Puget Sound/Eastside area. Eden (owner) has to be one of the nicest, most professional cats I've met in the music "scene". Considering the chaotic nature of those he is providing for, he has managed to keep a smile on his bearded face while he as created a consistently solid and reliable place that is perfect for any type of band/artist to come and for (actually) pretty cheap learn and hone their craft. After 20 years, it's pretty mind boggling how much of an impact this place has actually had on the music scene in Seattle. I've been to my fair share of "rehearsal spaces" that charge double what Evolution charges and are nothing more than smelly, dude-dens with busted speakers, paper-thin walls, and uninformed owners. There are plenty of places like this (and not like this) to rehearse at in Seattle where my band and I are based, but I'd much rather make the drive to Bellevue (in rush hour traffic at times) and give Eden my money because he deserves it. Evolution is top notch - it's like the Ritz Carlton of rehearsal spaces. It's clean, the equipment works, the rates are extremely reasonable, and the owner Eden is a dream. He's the fanciest dude on the Eastside - professional, chill, helpful, magical. We've even met some fun bands to share bills with just by practicing there. The rooms are good sized, the P.A.'s are loud and the gear is great for rehearsal. I have practiced at monthly spaces and it always cost an arm and a leg, not to mention chasing my band mates for their share of the rent, this way we split the cost the night of rehearsal, and the price is great $15 an hour you can't go wrong. read more

I went back to Evolution recently and felt compelled to update my earlier review. I used to visit on weekdays during somewhat of a rush hour timeframe and visited this time on a Sunday afternoon...A much better experience. We were allowed into our room early (there were no other bands immediately before us) and checked on to make sure everything was to our liking. I was pleasantly surprised with the JCM 900 half stack provided, excellent tone and appreciate the tube amp flavor that was provided to us instead of the historical entry level / solid state amps with one or two preamp tubes. Long story short, my opinion of Evolution is righted, I look forward to the next time I'm there and updating to 5 stars...but will have to wait to see if our experience is the same during a weekday "rush hour" timeslot. read more

I have been rehearsing at Evolution pretty regularly since 2006. When comparing my experience at Evolution to my experiences at other rehearsal studios, the difference is night and day. I honestly can't say enough positive things about this studio. I think the first two most stand out things about evolution, when compared to other rehearsal studios, are the hands-on customer service and the upkeep of the facilities. The owner, Eden, pretty much treats everyone who comes through the studio like he's going to valet park your car for you and bends over backwards to see to it that you have everything you need (extra cables, earplugs, whatever) and unlike every other rehearsal studio I have ever been to, the walls are painted, there's no graffiti on the walls, no puke on the floor, there is toilet paper in the restroom, the back line gear is all in good repair and he has a ton of it. Pretty much whatever you could ask for. Considering the type of quality and service you get here, the prices should be double what they are. The only thing I would change about this studio, if I could, would be to have it open 24/7 instead of it's current hours (which are still totally reasonable, I just want to play whenever I want to play) and add more rooms. The schedule tends to be pretty full so you've got to be on top of your game with scheduling or there won't be anything left for you because the rooms here are in high demand, as they should be. Evolution offers rehearsal spaces in three sizes, all reasonably priced. You need to bring your instruments, patch cords, cymbals, and sticks. Drum kits, bass and guitar amps, and vocal PA including mics are all provided. Eden, the Majordomo, is very attentive and everything works, including both heating and cooling.
