The mountains are just as beautiful as they have always been. Maybe a little worn down over the ages (ok, sometimes I just feel old). The overlooks are pretty fantastic. We went to the tunnel overlook. We went the "long" way. You can go to the second parking lot from the Visitor center for a much quicker hike, but it wasn't an epic journey through tunnels of mountain laurel and rhododendrons. Your choice for the jungle experience or the straight run. Once there, the views of the tower and tunnel were spectacular. We also stopped at the Lodge Restaurant for lunch. It was just an awesome, calming time. I really wish we had spent days instead of an afternoon. Maybe when I retire, we will stay longer in the fall. I had the club sandwich which was really good. The fries in it were just the way I like them: crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. Waitress was good & prompt which checks all the boxes for me. DEFINITELY recommend this for a visit. Whatever your outdoor criteria is, this place will meet it.

Believe them when they say they are strenuous, though! The Bottom of the Breaks Trail is stunning, but it's quite a trek! The lodge is set up hotel style, and the Dogwood Lodge is pet friendly! I saw an elk and so many deer! Hit all the overlooks, hike the trails, eat at the restaurant, and stay somewhere in this gorgeous park! There's a lake and nearby rivers if you are a boater or a paddler!

The current is mild and does most of the work for you, but there's plenty of opportunity to paddle if that's more of your style. These kayaks are super stable and seem like they would almost take a concentrated effort to make them tip. The river trail is amazingly clean. I could probably count on one hand the items of trash I noticed on the 4-mile trip.

Now, I will be totally honest and say that this was not my first choice. I wanted to go to Red River Gorge to kayak, as that's one of my favorite areas in the state; however, the water levels were so low that the kayaking options were extremely limited. After learning that news we looked around online and discovered Hatfield-McCoy River Trails. We called, asked a few questions, and decided to give it a shot. When we arrived everything seemed as usual. They have a small venue where they sell a few items and snacks, there are kayaks and tubes all around, and they also sell passes to zip line (though I don't know much about that, as we did not participate). We were loaded onto a bus and taken to the drop-in site, which is a short trip from the starting location. It was a bit odd, as it was next to several restaurant locations. I mean, we got into the water directly behind a Captain D's. But, once you take off the trip becomes a bit more scenic, which is nice. There are sections of the river that seem completely in nature, but in actuality you're next to a highway the entire time, so often you will hear vehicles driving by up above you. The point where the river trail ends is also very commercial. You stop at a boat dock in front of a Texas Roadhouse and shopping plaza. So, if you're looking for a secluded nature outing this trip is definitely not it. Overall the river is fairly clean as far as random trash goes, we saw a few cans, etc. in the water; however, we probably saw 200+ tires on our four mile journey. I know that seems like an exaggeration, but I assure you it is not. I may even be under-selling the amount of tires in that water. The trip itself was pretty fun. We had a group of family members, so we had a good time together. The river is very calm with a gentle current that will push you along for approximately the first three miles, but the last 3/4 of a mile or so you have to paddle hard to keep yourself going. There is also little to no shade on most of the trail. So, by the time we reached the end dock we were exhausted and extremely hot, as we had gone on one of the hottest days of the year. Now, here's where things really went wrong. I probably would have given Hatfield-McCoy River Trails a three star rating if not for what happened when we reached the dock, exhausted, and pulled our kayaks from the water. There was no one there to pick us up! I kid you not, we were alone with no idea how to get back to the location we had started from. So, we did what any reasonable person would do and called. We were told they had "waited on us for a long time" and had to go ahead and leave. Are you serious?! There were several people behind us on the trail, so we were not the last kayakers and we had not taken too much time - we didn't even stop along the trail to swim or anything (I did not want to get into that tire-infested water). Of course we were upset, and they said they would send someone to pick us up. At this point three additional kayakers pulled up to the dock behind us, as they had just finished the trail. (Two additional kayakers came over a half hour later as well.) We all waited there on the dock, in direct sunlight on one of the hottest days of the year, for thirty minutes before we called again. This time a different person answered the phone and seemed shocked to hear that we were there waiting and said they would send someone to pick us up right away. A few minutes later the bus arrived, we loaded on, and it took them an additional 15 minutes or so to load the kayaks. When the driver boarded the bus we finally thought we would be returning to our vehicle where we could bask in the sweet sweet air-conditioning and get something cold to drink. Nope. The driver then told us we would have to ride back with him to the drop-in site to take the kayaks to another group of people they had just dropped off there, because apparently they only have one bus and enough kayaks for one group at a time to be on the river. Ok, I get that this is a small operation, and that's fine. But, schedule the tours further apart, get another bus, get more kayaks, or something. Obviously kayaking is an outdoor activity, obviously summer weather is hot, obviously you're going to be tired from paddling; however, we were actually sick from the heat and direct sunlight by the time we finally made it back to our vehicle. No one should have to wait on a boat dock with literally no shade whatsoever for over half an hour for a ride to pick them up after a river trail excursion that they paid for. We were told someone would be there to pick us up, and when we called to ask why they were not there we were told they had waited and had to leave. That is no way to treat customers. I will never return to Hatfield-McCoy River Trails.

Amazing! This is a difficult course, but it is also the most organized and spirited marathon I've…read moredone. Because of weather and 2 hills, I would say give it a second thought if you want to PR. I did meet several people who it was their first marathon. I'm not sure what I would recommend for a first. The aid stations are excellent. The volunteers are plentiful. It's a beautiful, historic marathon, with beautiful views. It does require some more logistical planning you might not have to do for a a bigger race, but it's worthwhile. Example: I flew into West Virginia but my hotel was in Kentucky, so this was the first time I had to worry about a car rental. Everything is easy to navigate though. Everyone is friendly and accommodating. They will gladly help if you ask. The course is well marked. It's also a good race if you're a slower runner --they really care about the back of the pack runners! The medal is big and not my favorite, but it is one of my favorite race shirts. They also include a generous pasta dinner the night before. Definitely recommend this race!

Just completed the 2013 Hatfield-McCoy marathon on Saturday, 06/08/2013. This was state #36 on my…read morepersonal quest to run 50 states from Hawaii. With 14 more left to go, I can see the end in sight. Just need to plug away and everything will be alright. The Hatfield-McCoy marathon was named after the bloody feud that sparred on for years in the rugged, rural Kentucky / West Virginia border before ending almost peacefully in the late 1880's. I hadn't planned on running this one till my final year of 50 states, but as luck will have it, I did secure a wonderful flight itinerary along with a lovely flight price, so I booked that flight almost immediately. Staying with friends at the Holiday Inn Express in Pikeville, KY, it was the making of an epic weekend adventure that I will never forget. The Hatfield-McCoy marathon started on the Kentucky side and finishes up on the West Virginia side, just right over state lines in a town called Williamson. For 50 States Marathon Club rules, you can pick either state for the race to count, but not both. For me, since I ran Kentucky Derby marathon 2 months ago for KY, for sure that I will be counting this race for WV. This race is very small, but popular especially due to the theme of the race. The course weaves through rural Kentucky and West Virginia, crossing over state lines many times, but you would not know where at times, since there was no signage to let you know so. It didn't feel like it was a out and back course, but a point to point with a few u turns and a couple of loops to keep you on your feet. The start was near Belfry High School on the Kentucky side at the Food City, which is a local grocery store. All us marathoners gathered at the parking lot and had a fun time. At least 1/2 of the race field belong to the Marathon Maniacs, an elite marathon group that encourages marathoners to run marathons close together while having fun at the same time. Most of the course was on private residential road, which was good. Although a lot of these residential roads were open to traffic, we didn't have much trouble running 26.2 miles. There was a few cars that came real close to me, so I had to jump back and avoid them before they hit me. But we were in rural Kentucky, so they were fortunately far and few between. The course weaved through key places where the Hatfield-McCoy feud had taken place, which was great for the tourists like me. Thankful that there was no course time limit, so I took my time and immersed myself in the history and the atmosphere where all this feuding took place over a century ago. The course was very challenging and thankful for the aid stations with wonderful volunteers. Plenty of course support, more than what you would normally find. One big hill at mile 7, then rolling hills thereafter. The weather that morning was a cool misty 62 degrees till mile 12, which was awesome. It kept my mind off of things during the early miles. Then the sun came out and it was a challenge their after. The course ran through a golf course at mile 18 and through a rickety bridge that swayed when you walked on it, so that was harrowing for me when it did swing and I just froze up. Thankfully, I got across somehow and continued onward. Upon crossing the finish line, I got my finisher's medal and a photo with actors who played Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield and Ran'l McCoy, both with replica guns and the time period clothing. The works! It was a priceless trip that I wouldn't trade in for the world. We also got a mason jar with the Hatfield-McCoy marathon logo on it. They say that people drink liquor in glass jars back in the day - including illegal moonshine. I've been told that they do that till this day too. Guess traditions don't die, they just live on. There was finish line food, but my friends and I just left without staying too long, since we needed to get back to Indianapolis, IN as quickly as we could, while dropping me and another friend in Cincinatti, OH that day. I would definitely recommend this epic road race to anyone who loves to run marathons. They have a half marathon event too. New for this year is the 1st and 2nd half marathon, where you run the first half marathon, get a finish time, rest for a little bit, and race the 2nd half marathon and get a finish time for that too. Perfect for those who are running half marathons in 50 States, which is probably what I may do later in life. Loving the travel, the airfares and travel costs - not so much. Thankful as always that I have the physical and financial means to do this. To achieve a great goal is awesome, but the sacrifices are huge.
