I however had my fair of triumph and failure at Arvada West, and can still say that it was a great place to attend school. I felt that Arvada West really worked well on all fronts. Excluding minorities, it had people of all economic backgrounds, so no one was alienated based on their economic status. They worked well with kids ahead of and behind the curve. They stayed focused yet still offered a way to enjoy. My child was provoked by another student telling him he was glad his friend died. All my child did…read moreIn response was say, "Why the F*** would you say that about my friend?" My child was 6 feet away from the other student And didn't touch him. There was no physical altercation and nothing else was said. This was the first major interaction between my child and the other student. They sent my child back to class. They talked with the other student but no staff member ever followed up with my child to investigate, offer restoration, or provide any interventions or support. Nobody contacted or informed me, the parent. The first adult to speak to my child was an SRO officer a week after the incident threatening him with a no-contact contract and a ticket. When I tried to resolve this with the principal she harassed and bullied my child with false accusations that could not be backed up with documentation, never addressed any of my concerns, and then engaged in lying, manipulation, and gaslighting. This school does not act to fidelity with their own discipline matrix. The teachers and friends kept us there as long as we were, but if you are there long enough your child and then you will be traumatized by administration and "the behavior support team". They regularly weaponize law enforcement against a vulnerable population of children that are engaging in developmentally appropriate behaviors that should easily be resolved by staff. They are so unskilled that they resort to officer intimidation tactics and promote a school to prison pipeline. Be warned! The admin and staff that deal with behaviors have no business working with children or families, let alone families that need extra compassion, support, or trauma-informed care.
