She was mostly bed ridden but could sometimes be moved to a wheel chair. The staff treated her like their own grandmother sharing family stories as well as providing care. Walnut Gardens was very supportive of family members. We were free to come and visit whenever we wanted and for as long as we wanted. I was always treated with respect and was given updates on my mother's condition. The senior staff member also texted me when necessary with information. The house is cleaned thoroughly every week. It is a bright and airy home with a sun room dining area and a pleasant backyard. They decorate for all of the holidays to add to the cheeriness. They also have activities with specialists coming in to lead games and music. Of special note is Mr. Al who brings his guitar and leads sing-a-longs once a week. The birthdays of residents are always celebrated with little parties and many family members. It is not just me who was impressed with Walnut Gardens. Every Kaiser nurse, home health aide, and even the doctor commented this was the nicest place they visited among the many they know. I considered that high praise from professionals. If you are looking for a place for your parent or relative, I strongly recommend you visit and consider Walnut Gardens. I know first hand the challenges facing family members with a loved one who is reaching the end of their life. Issac and his team made that experience for me so much easier and I am truly thankful to him and everyone on the staff.

The staff is caring, sweet and attentive to all their clients needs. The meals are prepared daily by the staff and are all home-cooked and tasty. The little "extras" that the Walnut Garden offers are what make it even more special. From exercise classes, to musicians serenading the clients, to holiday celebrations, this home treats their residents as family. The owner, Isaac, is kind, caring and makes each resident feel special. I would highly recommend the Walnut Garden as a wonderful assisted living home. We really could not ask for a better place for my mom to be as she recovers from her illness.

Our mother not…read moreonly endured multiple bites at Toluca Lake Manor but also hour-long+ waits to go to the bathroom, stage 2 pressure sores, kidney stones from severe dehydration, bronchitis, multiple bladder infections, loss of 36 pounds... The "administrator" advised us prior to move in that she employed 2 caregivers during the day and one at night. Nope. She employed one* caregiver for nine residents (her ill brother, son and ill ex-husband all live here too) during the day and one night caregiver who was allowed to sleep (until recently when she proclaimed she couldn't afford to employ a night caregiver anymore; that she herself would sleep there instead). We had to pay for an additional third-party companion to work 12-hour night shifts for an additional $6,500. The one day caregiver was absent 2.5 hours++ a day (leaving mom without anyone to answer her calls for help) because 3 residents required an hour to change/bathe, and received a half hour for lunch. In the 8 months mom resided here, Toluca Lake Manor went through approx 40 caregivers. This was very hard on mom because they would rarely be given hands-on training prior to working with residents. *A second day caregiver would sometimes be at the house to help with meals or if working with a new hire. Most of these caregivers quit after a day or week. The "administrator" advised us mom could have anything she wanted to eat from a three-column menu she showed us. And that TLM's "cook" could accommodate a low-sodium diet. Nope. No cook (quit). Mom had to eat the one meal bought for the administrator's family for dinner (fast food, whatever pre-cooked meal was on sale at Ralph's, leftovers from the Toluca Lake Manor house in Toluca Lake or one rotisserie chicken for 9 people). If mom didn't like the one meal offered, oftentimes she was only offered a potato, as there was nothing else in the house to eat. Residents had to buy their own food, which was often eaten by staff and administrator's family (not to be replaced!). As for the doctor ordered low sodium diet being followed...the administrator claimed "No one told me. I can't afford to shop at Whole Foods." The administrator was impossible to bring issues to. For example, when my sister called to find out why our mom was found on the floor of her bathroom with a caregiver, she yelled at my sister and hung up on her. Another time, mom was trying to explain, while visibly upset, that she wasn't a guinea pig to be experimented on (with respect to not training new caregivers before having them assist her). The administrator started writing mom an eviction. When mom went quiet, she told her she would put it away "for now." The administrator's son came after my sister with a broom over his head when she was discussing the lack of training being given to new, inexperienced caregivers. When the administrator did promise to cure a breach it was never forthcoming, even when put in writing. Other times, issues were addressed by the administrator with texts like "Move out!" or no response at all. Yelling was quite common at TLM. The administrator's family members would yell profanity at residents. My sister and third parties had to clean mom's room, TLM never did. We also had to buy mom a space heater because the administrator locked the thermostat box so if mom was too cold or hot she was out of luck. Hot water would be turned off at various times as well. Caregivers never washed dishes in the dishwasher only by hand in luke-warm water, which was disturbing to mom because residents were all on different medications. These are only some of the disturbing highlights. After enduring bed bugs for 3 months without any steps being taken by TLM to protect the residents and eradicate the multiple bug (cockroaches too) infestations, I contacted Social Services. When Best Practices per CA Law were still not taken month later, we gave notice we were moving mom and had no choice but to buy her all new things. The administrator's response? "I'll report you to the credit bureaus!"

The rooms are generous in size and wheelchair-friendly, and many have beautiful views of the courtyard and small private patios for mini gardens. There is a restaurant-style dining room serving up award-winning meals--and ample desserts! The activity and living rooms have a cozy, family feel, and there is always something going on in the way of games, fun exercise classes, lectures, movie showings, field trips, and special events. The greatest asset, of course, is the patient and caring staff of the family-owned facility. Community Relations Director Jonathan is warm and welcoming. Health Services Director Laura is professional and generous with her time. Javier the Dining Services Director takes pride in his cuisine. The caregivers are loving and nurturing, and they keep lines of communication open. But perhaps the best indicator of the quality of The Gardens is how happy the residents are. They extol the virtues of the place with no prompting. (One woman said she'd tried five different facilities, and this was the best.) They're eager to welcome new residents into the family--by the third day, lunch-goers were calling my mom by name to sit at their table. As with most assisted living places, there is a sliding scale of services based upon need, and when a transition to a higher level of care is required, Safe Haven offers memory care with a higher caregiver-to-patient ratio. Safe Haven is safe and secure, with its own small garden and dining area. Caregivers encourage residents to spend most of their day in activities with others rather than remaining isolated in their rooms. I'm delighted I found this new home for my mom. She's still in the process of settling in--she's been there just under two weeks--but I can already sense this is a perfect place for her.

The Community Director Jonathan gave us a tour and was treated by the residents like an adored rock star as we walked through the halls - making introductions with residents, explaining the extensive amenities, along with the robust calendar of daily activities for residents to participate in. We moved her in a week later (after visiting other facilities). Within 2 weeks she told me "I'm meeting so many interesting residents. It's like living in a resort, everything is done for you. I love it here!" Last night I got a text from her saying that she attended a mini classical concert in one of the residents rooms (that resident is known for her musical talents). The staff is attentive, responsive and kind. Prayers answered! I am beyond grateful.
