She knew, that she will get stronger and she will be back on her feet, as soon as she starts her radiation. With that said, I end up talking her into moving to Park Forest, one, because it's close from my home, I can easily walk there & visit her. I told her I will even do volunteer work, so I have an excuse for visiting her there often. She went for it! That's right, she was ready to be among women her own age! On the day she moved in, I was unpacking some of her necessities, when she rang up the nurse. She pressed the button, like 10x, but no nurse came to see her. I also found out, that SHE WILL HAVE to walk to the bathroom, without her walker, and that there is no guard rail on her bed. Meaning, they didn't care if she fell, or tripped, my mom is DYEING of cancer and there is NO WAY IN HELL was she walking alone in the bathroom, without an assistance! To me, that was a torture! I found out, the buzzer had a hole so the reason why the nurse didn't hear her. What if she tried the buzzer and I wasn't there, and she's having an emergency? Right away, I decided, this was NOT a place for her. The lady who was in the same room as mom (roommate) her first warning to us was: "good luck, getting help around here!" I didn't know @ that time, what she meant. But she was giving us a good warning. I feel sorry for relatives, leaving their 'love ones' in a place such as this! I got a confirmation from her doctor, and took mom home with me, that same evening. That was a good move, on my part, because I had the last 3 months with my mother, and took care of her and had a chance to be a 'mother' to her and her the 'daughter'.

I was humbled to see some fabulous patient care for many of the residents at this modest facility, with day in and day out consistency. It resides in a quiet residential area off of the hustle-bustle of 82nd, yet close enough still to be a short walk for lunch/break options (7-11, and the Indian/curry hut right next door). I was in Porthaven short term to recover from an injury. The physical therapists and other…read moreprofessionals in the gym are fabulous. Very competent, and I felt like I was "on a team with them" for my on care, which is what the medical profession expects between patients and providers. These therapists' competence and care are the only reason I gave this facility three stars, instead of only one star. Porthaven is described as a skilled nursing facility. But it not that, as the nursing staff is short-staffed. Skilled nursing facilities are described as being for short term care, where patients are given therapy and expected to go home soon. But it seemed to me like there are people who actually live there.....the rooms of these people had some personal furniture, and personal pictures hung non their walls. One woman told me she had been there for four years. And as a whole I did not feel like there was teamwork between myself and many others there -- as a whole I felt like a lost my identity as a competent adult, and decisions were made FOR me and ABOUT me, and not in a timely manner, without my knowledge or consent. Fortunately, I have a health advocate, and she worked to make sure I was getting what I needed. CNA staff to patient staffing ratios, I was told by one of the CNAs at Porthaven, are determined Oregon State Board of Nursing. She agreed with me that Porthaven is understaffed. I subsequently researched this ratio and discovered that the state regulations for the bare minimum staffing for safety, and that facilities are able to hire more staff. The only reason I agreed to stay at Porthaven initially is because they allowed me to have my own room, without a roommate. Initially, I had a roommate, who left her TV on day and night. This is totally unacceptable for what should be healing environment, and I told Porthaven this, that I refused to admit myself, but then they assigned me to a private room at my request.

My mother was admitted and on her first night, she called for assistance to use the restroom--no one came. She fell, fracturing her sternum and three ribs, and the facility waited eight hours before calling an ambulance. She is now crammed into an 8x6 ft partitioned space with two other patients, separated only by curtains. In the weeks she's been there, I only received a single call from a doctor about her care, this was only after I threatened to report them. I had left multiple messages and even emailed the administrator and head of nursing--no one responded. This facility is dangerously understaffed, unresponsive, and negligent. I wouldn't wish this level of "care" on anyone. Avoid at all costs.

WARNING!! Do not bring your senior or weaker loved ones to Providence Hospital in Portland,…read moreOregon-the doctors and ethics committee appear invested in unaliving them. After making ageist comments about our father (he was a very young and active 80 year-old) and reminding us several times, as an excuse for why they weren't invested in continuing life-lengthening care, that he had been in and out of hospitals over a handful of months, the nephrologists and a cardiologist got together with a representative of the hospital's ethics committee and decided to allow him to die. Indeed, our father had been to hospitals several times. He was on a journey to discover why his legs were swollen. The doctors treated him with kidney-damaging diuretics (Lasix), which acutely (temporarily) damaged our father's kidneys, prednisone (which damaged his skin), and gave him a medication for destroying his immune system, as they incorrectly assumed he had an autoimmune issue without first confirming this diagnosis. Destroying your immune system apparently prevents it from attacking the body in an autoimmune issue, but it allows you to be more predisposed to getting infections or not fighting them. Our father did finally gain an accurate diagnosis: a very manageable form of leukemia that doesn't shorten life, if managed, which, after his correct leukemia diagnosis, he was doing. The side effects from the medications he was incorrectly prescribed during his hospital visits caused additional hospital visits, as the side effects were worse than the leukemia and leukemia treatment (which he was tolerating beautifully). While hospitalized for the side effects from the incorrect medications the hospitals gave him, he obtained infections such as RSV, C Diff, and a bladder infection. Due to my father's physical issues from the side effects of the medications, the doctors at Providence decided to not provide life-saving treatment and instead wanted to give him pain medication to lessen the effects of the death sentence they decided for him; otherwise known as "comfort care." We argued that dialysis could be an option as his biggest issue was fluid accumulation in his body. Providence's nephrologist said no, but when we asked for a second opinion, the second nephrologist said she would give him two weeks on dialysis only. We worried about this as it sounded like they would "pull the plug" after two weeks no matter how our father was doing. The dialysis was very effective. My father began recovering. His blood work revealed steady progress, which we were monitoring. He was chipper and not in any pain but also very worried, like we were, that the hospital would "pull the plug" on him as they had threatened by saying they would only give him two weeks of dialysis. We searched for how we could get him needed continued care after the two weeks and discovered that the state of Oregon shut down all long-term care facilities in the state. It would appear Oregon doesn't value the life of anyone who might need long-term care. The closest long-term care facility was in Seattle, Washington. We were ready to have our father moved to Seattle, Washington, if needed. While at Providence hospital, our father's kidneys showed signs of improvement, as he urinated with the appropriate color. On the last day of his two weeks allotted for dialysis, the hospital gave him a pill form of a medication that helped to stabilize his blood pressure so he could tolerate dialysis, which lowers your blood pressure while being treated, instead of the correct IV form of the same medication. The hospital admitted that the pill wasn't as effective or helpful as the IV version of the same medication, which our father was previously getting. Thus, on the last day of the two weeks of dialysis, his blood pressure dropped too low to safely continue. The nephrologist known as "Dr. K" let us know that she was going to let our father die. She refused to allow our father to again be on the IV medication that had worked for him which would allow him to continue dialysis. We argued with Dr. K on behalf of my father that if his blood pressure improved, would she allow our father to continue dialysis? She said if his blood pressure improved, she would okay it. We asked our father if he had seen a cardiologist while at Providence, and he said he hadn't. We got a cardiologist to review our father's chart, and she confirmed he could indeed continue on the IV form of the medication that effectively stabilized his blood pressure so he could continue dialysis. Even though our father's blood pressure was stabilized by the IV medication that was cleared by the cardiologist, Dr. K, would not allow him to continue the needed dialysis. According to the dialysis technicians, it takes a few weeks up to approximately three months for an acute kidney issue to heal. We were invested in giving our father that time. They are quiet and peaceful with flowers and tall trees in the distance. Since the management change last year, the atmosphere in the building has improved 100%.
