Caren actually cut my hair dry first (something no one has done before, but something I'll inquire about from now on) and only once she was mostly done washed, did a little tidying, dried, and VOILA: I have a haircut that settled perfectly day-of and, more importantly, has settled perfectly every day since. I'm low-fuss when it comes to my hair (I wash with a little shampoo and ton of conditioner, and maybe use little leave-in coconut oil before air-drying, but that's about it). Caren's cut works perfectly for my normal minimal-maintenance days, and frames my face more nicely on days when I play a bit. Best yet, Caren's cut cost half of what a comparable job in San Fran would cost! If only I could take her back to the Bay with me, I'd have Caren cut my hair forever.

DISCRIMINATORY/ILLEGAL/RACIST BUSINESS PRACTICES AT SANDY'S BARBERSHOP:…read more This barbershop openly refuses to cut African American men's hair. Typically when barbershops engage in this kind of discriminatory behavior they try to do it covertly. Here at Sandy's---they are open about their refusal. I came into the barbershop to get a standard men's shave. I am quite literally bald headed, so I made it clear up front that the only service I would need is a standard shave of my beard. I was told, "We do not cut coarse hair." Never mind the fact that the hair on my beard is no "coarse" than any other human being's hair, simply being a black person rendered me illegible from receiving a haircut. The incident occurred with the shop's owner. After I highlighted the fact that discriminating against certain male customers for standard, public services (like a shave) was unacceptable--the store's owner/manager decided to lecture me about how this was not "about race." The gaslighting was disgusting, and the establishment is a complete dump. On my way out, the pitiful owner had the nerve to ask me "not to come back." The only reason I would be returning back---is to bring my lawyer. Moral of the story: if you are reading this and you are a client of color, you should take your money elsewhere. This shop has a racial discrimination lawsuit on its way.
