I've just got a job near this shop and I'm sure I'll be saving loads ever month because the stock is reasonably priced (I used to work near McColls on Temple Way). Laughing at me as I walked in drenched and looking like a drowned rat, he had no shame in telling me all about the sun, the heat and the warm evenings he enjoys back at home. Weather aside, the shop is really good for fruit and veg, alcohol supplies and the general items you expect to find in a newsagent. Basically they sell papers and mags plus a small range of groceries, including bread, milk and eggs. What makes it great, though, is the friendly and slightly eccentric guy who runs the place. He's well known in the area for his friendly, flattering greetings. Men will receive, 'Hey, boss man, how's it going?'; while women are greeted with, 'Where's your boyfriend, James Bond?' A really cheery bloke, and he always remembers my regular order, this is what a local shop should be all about.

If you are a fan of penny sweets, Star News and Booze also boasts an impressive selection of the 'old school' variety. Furthermore, you'll often find discounted cider and larger in here too. Indeed, if you're a cider fiend and are in the area, you won't find an outlet that sells cheaper cider than this place - nope, not even Asda Bedminster...

I don't know what it is then that makes the standard of all the shops slide so much. Surely, the shop should be a corner stone in all that is Bristolian and local? This is seemingly not the case as this is possibly the sixth Evening Post shop that has quite a limited range of stock. As I have noted before, there is little more than sweets, chocolates, beer and fizzy drinks and, for want of more euphemisms, an enormous range of glossy magazines for the less socially inclined gentleman. Yes, they sell The Evening Post and yes, you can put up whatever advertisements and notices you want to in the window - but come on Evening Post! Pull your socks up!

The food's a decent quality and includes baguettes, buns, pecoras, bhagis, samosas, chilli slices, flapjacks, salads It's all very satisfying, and it's an invaluable source of sustenance for breakfasting Bristolians. But this shop symbolises everything the Independent Record shop should be; the staff will always chat to you about music and ask you what you like so they can recommend stuff to you, or keep music behind the counter for when you next go in. If you're lucky enough to find this shop open you are in for a treat, they are always playing something you won't have heard before, and my advice is, buy the music they recommend to you. But finding this shop open is a game in itself, I had the misfortune of stopping by earlier today to find they have shaved even more opening hours from their week. So now it's just Fridays & Saturdays, which gives it more of a market stall feel. I hope by doing this they will get the business they need to stay open. So stop by at the weekend and start digging into the boxes of old records they have in the back! You'll find a Zeppelin album you didn't even know you needed.

An independent second hand record shop on Cotham Hill, The Beat Goes On is a rare find nowadays…read more Specialising in vinyl, they've got a big collection of second hand music, both on wax and on cd. Their range isn't massive, but there's definitely a few gems in here and it's worth really taking your time and having a peruse. Like the hardware store just around the corner, they've managed to cram an awful lot of stuff into a small premises, and it gets really crowded with just a few people in here. It's got a nice feeling to it - a bit messy and untidy but in a good, hippy and shambolic way. Definitely a shop that's well worth supporting, come and find a gem and spend a happy Sunday afternoon in musical bliss.
