Disappointing place. I ordered the Awaze tibs to go and got siga wot instead. Aside from clearly being a stew, there was not a drop of Awaze in it and the meat was clearly slow cooked and not pan fried. They clearly don't cater to Ethiopians or anyone who knows the cuisine. Even as siga wot, the dish was overly greasy and tasted mid. There are so many great Ethiopian restaurants in the area. This is not one of them. read more

Excellent everything. Service, food, atmosphere. Everything landed for me. Definitely a more refined and quiet experience than other Ethiopian restaurants in the area. We got a large sampling of items and everything was worth reordering next time. 10/10! read more

Came here accidentally- the boyfriend walked into the wrong restaurant and wouldn't come out, so I came in knowing that this place had decent reviews and should still be worth eating at. We got the only appetizer, the beef and chicken wot sampler, and the chocolate souffle. The appetizer was alright- a meat filling in a crispy fried pastry shell. It was small, came with three but one of them wasn't filled with anything. It came with a green sauce reminiscent of a cilantro chutney (although I'm not sure what it was), which added more flavor. Not bad, but not memorable. The chicken and beef wot sampler was also not bad, but not memorable. I've had better Ethiopian, and our palates began to get bored at the end of our meal. The chocolate souffle is not a souffle- it's a lava cake, and should we have known, we would've skipped out entirely. I particularly get annoyed when desserts are misnamed- what is the purpose of a name if it doesn't describe what we are supposed to get? Service is super slow here- I was prepared to go up and ask for our check, since we were left waiting around well after our dessert was finished. The restaurant is also super dark- we could barely see, and it wasn't for the "ambiance"- the candle on our table wasn't even lit, and it became increasingly irritating as the night went on. On top of being on the more pricey side, I wouldn't recommend Ethiopic. read more

Best Ethiopian food I've had in DC. Highly recommend getting the kitfo. Their doro wot is also good

I have never had Ethiopian food before, so this was a brand new experience for me. I know the general gist of how it's meant to be eaten as I've seen Andrew Zimmern eat it before on his show. I'm also quite adventurous nature when it comes to food. But it was just something that never came up! BF's dad suggested we stop in here for lunch on Black Friday, since they had just picked me up from the train station. They were open normal hours and we were able to find a parking spot on the same block. We were their first guests, but it filled up by the time we left. The place seems to only have one waitress during the time that we were there, so service was good in the beginning and then a bit sparser at the end. Getting the check took a while. The food was really good. But some of the dishes were super spicy! I love the aspect of eating with your hands and being able to eat your plate essentially. read more

Stopped in this quaint restaurant with its modern decor, yet comfortable feel. I had heard the food was good here and I wanted to get away from the crowd around the National Mall. so why not hop a quick cab from that area to this lower part of the Northeast. This restaurant is really cute on the inside and I thought it was a beautiful treat to sit right in the window and people-watch. I ordered the Sega Key Wat. It was just okay for me. The meat was not as tender as I would have liked. The wat wasn't as spicy as i would have liked either. Nevertheless, the flavor was still good. I think I've had better though. I also had a glass of an Ethiopian white honey wine. That was a deliciously sweet wine that I would order again and again! My dining companions ordered the Doro Wat, Vegetarian Sampler and the Asa tibs. We all agreed that the food was decent enough to have tried once, but none of us would go back and certainly would not go out of our way to return. The service was less than a 3 star. IN fact, the service was rather slow and largely indifferent. There was some confusion with the amount of money that should have been returned to our table, but they happily straightened it out. This restaurant is good for: Trying something Different. Small Groups. Satisfying your Spicy Craving. Pre-Teen and Up. read more

As a huge fan of Ethiopian cuisine, I had always wondered what makes Ethiopic so great. Everyone raves about it. It's always published on "must-eat" lists. But, could it really be that different from any other Ethiopian restaurant? The answer, is, yes. Ethiopic is where you go when you've thought enough to make reservations, when you are trying to impress, or when you are introducing someone to this type of cuisine for the first time. Or if you are the first-timer. The service, décor, ambiance, and food are amazing. The presentation was beautiful. The service was great - very friendly and helpful. I heard servers making suggestions and putting first-time customers at ease. There's plenty of natural light, which complements the wood and brick interior well, plus outdoor seating. I recommend reserving a table by the window. It's more upscale than many other Ethiopian restaurants, yet prices are only slightly higher. The food was terrific. Bread and red pepper sauce are brought to the table first. We had the vegetarian sampler (lentils, split peas, collard greens, timtim, and potatoes) along with the signature lamb tibs. The portions were huge. The lamb was presented in a ceramic pot with a burner underneath and the vegetables were on the injera platter. Additional injera is rolled nicely in a basket. Everything was seasoned perfectly and I appreciated the huge chunks of jalapenos, rosemary, and garlic in the lamb dish. Also, the honey wine is a must. Run (but make a reservation). read more

Our first experience eating Ethiopian cuisine happened last evening while my wife and I were visiting my daughter and her husband . It was indeed a very unique experience as I really had no idea what to expect. I was a bit surprised when my tomato and jalapeno salad arrived at the table without any silverware. I was told that all items were eaten by hand with the injera bread provided. The bread was very spongy unlike any bread I have ever encountered but did the job quite well. ( Even though half way through the meal, I resorted to asking for a fork lol) We shared both a 7 vegetable platter and a 4 meat platter which consisted of both spicy and non spicy items, which pleased my wife greatly as she has no tolerance of hot or spicy food items. All of us were happy with the food and the courteous and prompt service provided. All parties agree that we would return another time. read more

The pricing is great, food is AMAZING, but the service was a bit rude. When I couldn't understand what the person was saying, he yelled at me over the phone... I couldn't pronounce the food name, so I explain what the food was, and he expected me to be able to say and know the food name... But! I cannot tell you how great the food was! I have trypophobia which is basically the fear of patterns of holes. And their bread thing on the top of the plate was terrifying!! But I HATED how much I LOVED the taste! I had to close my eyes just to keep eating it! It was just that good!!!! The rest of the plate was just phenomenal. Once covid is over, I'd definitely still stick to takeout since service was mediocre. But I'd be more than happy to come back for more! read more

My first experience eating at an Ethiopian restaurant was actually quite good. I've always done take out but this experience was great! I went with another person and we ordered a two orders and it was definitely plenty of food. Key points: 1) they are very generous with the injera! 2) the vegetarian sampler had a variety of items (7 of them)- gomen, miser wot, fosolia, tulips gomen, kik aletcha, dinich wot, and shimbra asa wot 3) the ethiopic signature tibs were delicious! Definitely small portioned for the price you pay. 4) prices were definitely high, since I'm used to cheap take out that's equally as delicious! Overall, it was a lovely experience. My latest DC trip was one full of firsts, and this was no exception. Like Mike S., I had never tried Ethiopian food before. Because our dining experience with friends was for his birthday, he chose (and chose well!) Ethiopic. I was surprised by how delicious all of the vegetarian items sounded, and was thrilled when my meat-eating co-diners decided to order the vegetarian platter for 2. I also ordered the buticha, a chickpea puree with garlic, jalapeño, and other seasonings. The buticha was probably one of my favorite things, but I pretty much enjoyed everything on the vegetarian platter. I even tried beer (hate beer) that Mike ordered, and didn't mind it so much. I highly recommend Ethiopic because it was an all-around dining experience. read more

I highly recommend Ethiopic! Their food is delicious--it's flavorful, light yet filling, and healthy! We used to live near the restaurant's current location. Had they opened before we moved, it would have been one of our favorite and regular spots in DC! I highly recommend the veggie platter with injera (they even serve gluten-free injera). I especially like their--collard greens, yellow lentils, red lentils, cabbage and potatoes, green beans and carrots! Everything is excellent, but red lentils is a favorite dish. Nice atmosphere and service! read more

Very solid Ethiopian spot that lived up to the hype as one of the best in the city. It also transported well, as we got it for takeout during COVID times. I was a fan of the portion sizes and the spice level, which I think was pretty high compared to some other places. I enjoyed basically all of the versions they offered, from the lamb to the beef to the traditional vegetarian spread. My only complaint on the food was the peanut baklava, as I didn't end up liking the peanut incorporation as much as the traditional baklava. Overall, while the takeout was really good, I look forward to eating in person someday where I can get the more traditional spread out on a plate and not wrapped up in a box. read more

I loved my experience at Ethiopic! Compared to many others in the district, this one by far is my favorite !! We came here for vday...perfect ambiance...perfect dinner. We ordered a vegetarian platter and I got the fish and my hunnie ordered doro wot, which is chicken in a spicy sauce and egg... My first thought was I'm about to eat nemo *tear* & I was a little hesitant and skeptical on eating the fish, but after some coaching form the boo- I tasted the fish & boy I tell ya! It was by far the best fish I've had in my life!!! Seasoned perfectly!!!! Mmmmmmm-mmmmmm I can taste it as I type this review!!!! It was so good !!!! Meaty. The skin was very crispy & they give you a lemon to jazz it up a bit. Boy oh boy!! Then his wot, I'm not really a fan of dark meat chicken...just my man (lol...lolheeehee) so I wasn't too fond of this dish. My hunnie on the other hand- he loves the doro wot. I did enjoy the egg though. Lol The platter for 2 was plenty for he and I. I also tried 2 wines both the red and the honey wine. Both were delish! But that honey wine and the fish is what's certainly going to keep me coming back to this place!!!!! read more

Came to DC to visit family and friends and the airbnb we stayed in by H Street suggested this restaurant on their list as it is also close to the H Street corridor. They only have outdoor seating due to Corvid-19. It was a chilly evening when we dined here. They had two heated lamps which really didn't do anything even for my daughter who was next to it. It was not terribly cold so it was bearable. We could still use the bathroom indoors so that was fine They had six tables outside and only one server. He wasn't very friendly and short with people asking questions. I had the Ethiopian spiced tea which was good. We had a pastry with beans for appetizer which was pretty good. I really liked the flakiness of the wrap. For the entree we had lamb and beef tibs. The veggies don't come with them so they cost extra. We normally have ater (yellow beans) and go men (greens). The lamb was okay and the beef was better. The vegetables were okay. They missed the mark on the flavors of the entrees and the veggies. Their injera was too soft and needed to be just a tad firmer. I've had better flavors in other Ethiopian restaurants in Atlanta, specifically Desta. I was disappointed as they had great reviews on Yelp and per the airbnb host. It is also pretty costly. Paid $117 for this food which included a 20% tip. Not sure if I would have paid 20% tip for the service. The traditional 15% would've been well more than required for this service. On the positive note, their menu is electronic and they have you scan to order which was as a nice touch. I would give them a 3 1/2 stars but Yelp does have half stars option. We didn't bother having desserts so we found another option. This is okay for Ethiopian. It could be fantastic for someone who never had it but I've had great Ethiopian food in Detroit/Ann Arbor area and Atlanta so I may be a bit biased about it. DC is where I was introduced to Ethiopian food decades ago and loved it! Thus, this is why I was disappointed as I know there's a large community here. I'm sure there's other fantastic Ethiopian restaurants in the city. This is okay. read more

Really wanted to fall in love with this restaurant, but couldn't :/ Nicely decorated and somewhat spacious restaurant interior wise. Outside seating is available as well. An issue I had with this place was the service. It was a bit slow. The service was just "okay," they weren't that excited about sharing what was on the menu, nor explaining the dishes to my mom and grandmother. There were times we had to call the server for assistance, refills, and the check. We ordered a lot of food! First, we got the butcha (My grandmother's favorite), which we all loved very much. We also got a vegetarian platter, awaze tibs, ethiopic signature tibs, and ethiopic signature kitfo. My mom absolutely loved the kitfo, and I liked the ethiopic signature tibs. We weren't crazy about the awaze tibs or the vegetarian platter. After all of the food, we spent about 120 for 4 people including tip, and just wasn't that satisfied. read more

I am a novice with Ethiopian food, but I was pretty pleased with Ethiopic. The vegetarian combo I got included an appealing and diverse mix of stews with lentils, split peas, potatoes, and cabbage, plus a tomato salad in the middle. The Americanized injera, apparently mixed wheat and teff, was spongy and very filling, but easy on the tastebuds. Occasional jalepenos made an impact as well. There was plenty of bread to dip and mop up all the food. They had a decent-sized array of vegetarian (vegan) choices on the menu and a couple of combo options. It's a messy experience (they did bring towelettes afterwards). The classic brick-walled space was pleasant, though I pined for a more comfortable chair. At the end of the day, the price wasn't low, but I was quite stuffed. Towards the west side of E street, it's accessible to Union Station and NoMa, and you could definitely do worse than this in a neighborhood that isn't the best for plant-eaters. read more

Food is good, but the online menu prices are a lie! Real prices are much higher and expensive.

Had been craving for an Ethiopian dish for a very very long time and thought I'd get a fixing here. Got the vegetarian sampler for one with a fish on the side, let me start off by saying the serving size alone is more than generous and will definitely feed more than one although made just for one. The fish was good especially with the complimentary lemon wedge it brought with it. Was flavorful flaky and moist all while still having a nice outer fried crust. The vegetarian sampler was good but it didn't exceed my expectations when I kept thinking day in and day out for this stuff. Now the last time I had Ethiopian food was when I was eating red meat and I felt like that is what this dish was missing, the meat adds so much flavor to everything else that together it makes it taste incredible. But because I had only opted for the sides and not really the traditional beef tibs it was sort of just that, sides. So although the veggies had flavor it wasn't overwhelming with anything bolder than subtle feeling. Still I was satisfied just had to get use to the fact of what it was without the beef or lamb. read more

Curious to explore this neighborhood, I stumbled upon Ethiopic restaurant along the H St corridor. The parking meter outside did not work so I had to pay by phone. Ethiopic restaurant looks different from many other Ethiopian restaurants. The design is a combination of modern and rustic, sporting warm brick on one side, and lovely wooden decor throughout. Beautiful artwork lines the walls, and the restaurant has indoor as well as outdoor seating. Unlike most Ethiopian restaurants we were provided with an appetizer of bread and cayenne pepper and olive oil (not spicy). Our order of doro wat, injera, vegetables and a deep fried croaker came out in reasonable time, and it was fresh and delicious! I highly recommend the croaker! The service was prompt, warm and professional. The mixture of clientele, being both Ethiopian and other, shows how popular at this restaurant is. My first Ethiopian experience and it was interesting and a category of food and culture that I want to discover more. We went here and got a dish right before going to dinner. We shared a Minchet Abish Aletcha Wot and well it wasn't that big but I felt that maybe the way they served it could've been improved? There's some things that I question and I guess the way it was served I asked why? The reason why I was thinking this was because well, the meat that was served was wet. I think injera bread is spongy type of bread and so when they spread the meat out on the injera bread it sort of just soaked into it and just got wet and became a mess. I think if they left it alone and let the meat be inside a bowl while you take the injera bread and scoop it out with the bread it would have been so much better. That was my only thought for my first experience of Ethiopian food. However, the meat was well seasoned and it was great. The injera bread has a bit of a sour taste but it wasn't bad. It went with the meat real well and I think is great because it isn't filling like normal bread would. I definitely will continue checking out more Ethiopian dishes as this experience here at Ethiopic was so good. I look forward to it. The service here was great and they were very helpful when they asked if we had ever ate Ethiopian food and to make sure that we knew how to eat the food. Terrible food, low quality injera (it's a big deal!) at least the contemporary space eased the blow. Maybe I'll return for tea? My first week in D.C. & felt obligated to check the Ethiopian food scene. Give yourself 5min for parking- there is only street parking. Came on a Saturday afternoon and my group of 3 were seated promptly by the hostess. We shared a veggie platter and "shekla" tibs. It came in about 20-30min. FOOD: kik (yellow split peas), and Gomen (greens) and the cabbage were not fresh. They had this mushy consistency and lacked any seasoning. The tibs was digestible BUT it wasn't good. They slapped together chunks of meat and tomatoes-more fit for fajita dish than Ethiopian tibs! I even specified "shekla" tibs but it was just presented that way - didn't adhering to the "shekla" cooking style. INJERA: so Ethiopian injera is supposed to be made out of Teff (gluten free superfood). Most restaurants skimp out and substitute dash of corn flour- usually undetected. Ethiopic injera was overwhelmingly cornish. SERVICE:The staff were very soft-spoken, as most Ethiopians are. Funny thing is, we ate all of it! Good ethiopian food! Cute, quaint restaurant located on H NE - super easy to find. I made reservations (thanks to Yelp) ahead of time and we waited maybe 10 minutes once we arrived. Super small restaurant, walking in, and others following behind, the entryway got a little crowded. They were super busy around 7:30pm on a Sunday night. The hostess was doing 3 jobs when we got there - juggling between seating people, to giving tables their waters & getting people requested items. She wasn't around when we arrived, so we had to wait. Once seated, it took about 5 minutes for someone to greet us. She wasn't much help and the 2nd time she came around she just asked us if we were ready to order. It took a while to get her to come back each time after she left us. I ordered the chicken & beef sampler platter. Really great option when you don't know what to order. Very filling, it's good for 2. Their injera was pretty good and the spices were excellent. The spicy meats had a good amount of spice, but not to crazy. A fancy Ethiopian restaurant. I agree with other yelpers who said Ethiopic is a good restaurant for first timers. Although I'm not an expert, I've tried a more authentic Ethiopian restaurant in Buffalo, NY that was better than Ethiopic. Since Ethiopic is a cleaner, dimly lit, classier restaurant, it comforts first-timers and reassures them that Ethiopian food can't be that bad in such a nice place. Food: -free bread with chili powder and oil dip: okay -Azifa: "lentil salad seasoned with red onions, garlic, jalapeno peppers, olive oil, lemon juice, herbs & spices" served with injera; delicious salad; had a nice spicy kick to it; flavorful -Vegetarian Sampler: "a sample of 4 vegetarian dishes: gomen (collard greens), miser wot (split lentils), kik aletcha (yellow split lentils), dinich wot (curried potatoes)"; the collard greens were a bit too bitter for my taste; i enjoyed the potatoes and lentils -We added fried croaker fish to our vegetarian sampler - the fish was crispy, but not oily; pretty good with lemon -Injera: was ok.. wish there was more of a tangy taste to it like that Ethiopian restaurant in Buffalo, NY; best part though was that they will keep giving you a basket of injera when you run out! Service was OK. I would recommend coming here for lunch because the prices are a lot cheaper for the same food. Dinner is just marked up lunch prices. read more

Ethiopic - Vegetable sampler with fish, salad, injera - Ethiopian Near Me - Washington, DC, District of Columbia

When my friends raved about Ethiopian food, I imagined an intimate, communal setting and conversation flowing over mouth-watering spices. Ethiopic delivered exactly on my expectations and more! The ambiance is simple, chic, and intimate. Candle light that prompts you to relax, but not too much that you can't see your food. The injera is plenty as the waitress replaced the basket twice (each basket has 6 rolls). Per everyone's suggestion, we shared the vegetable sampler (7 veggie dishes total with an extra tomato/basil salad) with an added fish for $2, and we slso shared the Ethiopic specialty lamb tibs. The fish is served whole - bones and all - but it is so perfectly pan-fried that it tasted like fried chicken. I was especially head over heels for the offerings on the veggie platter... in fact, I was so mesmerized by the party on my taste buds that I couldn't even process the descriptions of the dish by our server. I was too occupied eating. The lamb was so juicy and flavorful that I actually mopped up the sauce with my injera. Finally, I have been eating nonstop for the past couple of weeks due to marathon training, and I actually left feeling stuffed and content.
