PRIDE WOD 2023
Alysa H.

This gym has such a welcoming environment for anyone just starting their fitness journey to even a seasoned athlete! Everyone is very encouraging when it comes to achieving your goals and trying new things. It's the best part of my day to come here and put in some work with great people.

Ready for my wod!

My favorite crossfit gym of all time! Not only is the space very big here but the people are very welcoming. I really love the coaches here especially, coach Anna and Zack who are both very knowledgeable and great coaches. They will challenge you! The wods are extremely challenging! Out of all the gyms I've been too I always felt like the wods here would kick my butt! They always have an Rx+ weight!!! Also, they have a dedicated space for oly lifting! The gym culture here I feel is the kindest and most welcoming I've ever been too. Darren the owner is super chill and takes good care of the gym with Leila, his lovely wife. Best of all, open gym is pretty much available whenever they are open! It's only a little hard to do open gym if there are classes going on, otherwise you can easily find a space to workout in the corner. Shoutout to my family at Trojans athletics! I love you guys!

ESTLR is a little oasis in downtown - the outdoor setup is top notch, particularly in the covid environment where the ability to workout outside with equipment is really limited in the city. Programming is amazing (and ass-kicking), while head coaches Dana and Anna do an incredible job of both encouraging athletes and watching form. Owner Darren is super accommodating and will make newcomers feel welcome - definitely recommend on both a drop in or regular member basis !

Fantastic facility! Awesome staff! Amazing results! After trying a few different crossfit gyms, I decided on this location because the size and the people! The gym is one of the biggest I've been to, which is nice for a hundred reasons; plus the people that go there are the perfect balance between competitive and fun - so everyone is trying their best and pushes each other, but not taking anything too seriously. Also love they sometimes do fun events (beer pong tournaments, happy hours, etc), plus they bring out lots of nutritionists, and other fitness specialists for body composition evaluations, and more.

It was not a clear establishment like OTF or F45. The class I took was on a Wednesday and it was only two of us. In the beginning Steve was very friendly and none stop communication until I decided to try his gym. Prior to signing up, I discussed that I wanted to train 4x a week with him before he passes me on to other people. So I signed up and paid $1200 ( waste of money) thinking i would train 4x as week with him. The next day I showed up Steve was there and no communication of who I was meeting, I ended up training with a 22 years "actor" who has zero interest in my fitness goals, but just there to do the job. It was impossible to train with anyone as everyone was busy with their clients and such. I didn't even get to use my 16 sessions leaving me owed 5. It was literally a scam of $1200 for believing him. And after that first initial meeting, I never heard from him or saw him. But he happened to be on Grindr recruiting next victims. Be careful when you signed up and never believe their 4 star reviews as it is shit show in there. He tent to hire "actors and artists who has zero experience in training but happened to use them and it's really sad. Don't believe me. I have receipts .

I've been to a lot of gyms in LA over the years and was used to working out alone -- but I realized I missed having people to share the journey with. I came to Surfcore at a point in my life when I knew I needed to make some real changes to my health, and Carlos and Jose were so supportive and encouraging. After my first year, I got a clean bill of health from my doctor, and they genuinely celebrated that with me. Through the six-week challenges and all the day-to-day workouts, I've learned how to better balance my eating, my fitness, and my mindset. The workouts are tough but fun, and the people are what make it special. It's supportive, hilarious, and full of good energy. I've made real friends here -- something that's hard to do as an adult in L.A. And honestly, I really appreciate talking both workout shop and sharing the latest tea at Diva Fridays. Sadly, I had to move out of the area and I really miss my routine with the crew. Surfcore had become my third space -- a place between work and home where I felt grounded and supported by friendly folk. Truly one of a kind.

Our goal for joining the gym was to just get into better shape, but we didn't have any other expectations. We came out of it not only looking our best on our wedding day ;) but also became a part of the most supportive community of friends and people from all walks of life! Everyone at the gym is so welcoming, and we love the ALOHA spirit and vibes. The gym is run by two passionate (& extremely fit) owners, Carlos & Jose. They are not only our trainers, but true community leaders that always show up and do their best to make us feel comfortable and supported as gym members. They truly go ABOVE & BEYOND to make each member feel welcomed, and are always offering guidance even outside of the gym settings. In regards to the workouts, they are definitely tough! But not in an intimidating way. Carlos and Jose work with you to make sure that you can safely perform the routines, while also knowing when to push you to challenge yourself. As someone who's time is limited, I appreciate that these workouts are efficient and effective, and I always feel productive after the 45 min session (and oftentimes sore for days - the good kind of sore). I definitely value the variety of HITT workouts, which alternate between upper and lower body and continue to be a challenge for me even after 1.5 years. Since joining Surfcore, I've felt so much stronger and actually have more definition to my arms/back, and more !! Additionally, as someone in the healthcare field, and specifically working in a weight loss clinic, I can confidently tell you that my experience with patients on weight loss drugs (i.e.GLP-1 agonists), see the best results in their body and form when they combine their medication with weight-bearing exercises (basically all the Surfcore workouts). PSA to anyone who is on GLP-1's, you can lose up to 30% of your muscle mass if you are NOT combining it with a structured exercise routine! Logistics- My initial question when I first found them through a google search was "how's the parking situation??" Parking is accessible and free! Such a rarity on this side of LA. The biggest bang for your buck is signing up for their monthly membership to get unlimited access to all their classes. My personal focus was going to the group classes, but Surfcore also offers other opportunities for working out, including their barbell club, 6-week challenges that incorporates regimented combination of clean eating with workouts, personal 1-on-1 training, and fun competitive events on holidays and at the beach - and more! We are SO extremely lucky to have been a part of the Surfcore community, and if it wasn't for making the move out of LA, we would've continued to stick with this gym for life. They have set an extremely HIGH bar(bell) for what we'll be looking for in a gym community in our next chapter. We are truly going to miss our Surfcore family!! If you are looking for a place to start your fitness journey, please do not hesitate to reach out to Jose & Carlos to join this vibrant community!!

I've done almost every studio in LA and NYC and work out 5-6 times a week, and feel pretty well-versed in the LA workout scene. (Tracey Anderson, Silver Springs, Barrys, Heated Room, etc etccc). so I feel like I can confidently say this was not right... like something is so off about this place I walk in, and they show me around, point out the amenities, but then tell me I can't use the locker room because it's for members only. Okay... fine. I go into the waiting area, and even though the class is listed as 10:45 AM, it doesn't actually start until 10:58 AM. We're all just sitting there on our mats waiting. Then the instructor (who is the owner) walks in without saying a single word and literally just starts working out full speed ahead. No intro, no warm-up, no cues, no hi, just starts like full workout mode in the mirror facing herself - just loud music and silence from her like she has a mic on but isn't actually using it. Maybe she was saying something, but the music was so loud you wouldn't know. I left the room not knowing what her voice sounds like.. Then, a girl with a camera walks in, records her for 10 seconds, and leaves. What?? That was strange, but okay. The class keeps going--still no cues, no counting, no nothing and every few minutes, this camera girl comes back to film her again. You never do a move for more than 5 seconds, so you just have to watch her in the mirror to even know what's going on. It felt less like a workout class and more like we were just there to watch her work out. Otherwise, why would there be no cues, no corrections, no countdowns... and a camera girl filming her the whole time Oh, and there was a full-on ring light set up in front of her to make sure she had good lighting for these video clips. All this for a $40 class?? Am I the only one who thinks this is weird?? I read a lot of reviews before going, and now I'm genuinely wondering if I missed something or what...

Nope- I have been corresponding over email for a week now with not much help, except then saying this is their policy- and I must have a email confirmation of cancelled services - which I have from my app only. Anyways , they won't refund me my money- even though I contacted them just days after charges. You would think they would have a grace period, or something prorated, or even a notification that you have an upcoming recurring charge. I guess this is how they run their business , and needless to say they have lost a long term customer.

I originally found this gym because of my trainer, Bob, and I'm so glad I did. Metroflex is definitely old-school but in the best way possible. It's not overcrowded, there's room to actually train, and you're not fighting for equipment like you do at commercial gyms. What I love most is that they literally have everything: powerlifting, Olympic weightlifting, bodybuilding, CrossFit-style training, boxing, you name it. No matter what type of training you're into, this gym has the equipment and the space to support it. Coming from a commercial gym where it was always packed, limited machines, and chaotic, this place was a breath of fresh air. The vibe here is different. Everyone is welcoming, friendly, and actually there to work. Another huge plus: this gym is always open even on holidays. Hours might be a little shorter on a holiday, but they're still open, which means you can always get your workout in. That alone says a lot about how much they care about their members. It's hard to find a gym that checks all the boxes, but Metroflex really does. If you're serious about training and want a gym that feels like a community instead of a zoo, this is the spot.

Super clean gym, wide open space, good equipment and the friendliest and knowledgable team of coaches. I love that there's proper warm up, stretch session AND thorough instruction for technique and form before the actual workout. Too many gyms overstuff their WODs without proper technique or plan and that's when injury happens. I also love that their workouts are well thought out, so there's a chance for growth, and I'm able to come more than 4-5 times a week without feeling like I'm going to get injured. Also, what a great idea to have a WOD app to log your workouts and have the ability to cheer on others and vice versa. It's very refreshing and encouraging. The members here are all super supportive and friendly too. Just the kind of vibe and camaraderie you need when you're going through a tough session. And one thing I think is so important for any gym is attentive coaching, VS definitely cares. The coaches aren't on their phones, doing their own thing or cleaning or trying to close up when you're doing the workouts, they're paying attention to you. I've been to other places, where it's not the case. Anyway, shout out to the awesome coaches like Allison, Ernie, Tarson, Cassandra, Tia and the very friendly owner Chad for making me feel so welcome.
