Being an English expat can get lonely sometimes. It takes time to adjust to cultural differences, customs, and the language of a new city. Though you are most definitely having the time of your life, you occasionally miss the familiarity and comfort of family and old friends. Estar Cafe was my solace when I craved conversation, laughs, and a warm embracing environment.
Almost every Sunday at 6:15 PM, I would wait anxiously with masses of other young locals to seize a coveted seat. It was heaven when the gates finally opened and the mixed scent of freshly brewed coffee and sweet ice cream spilled onto the cobblestone street.
What made the cafe so unique was they had a six foot shelf piled high of different cards and board games to play. The throng of games ranged from Trivial Pursuit, Clue, Monopoly, Taboo, Life, Scattergories as well as many others I hadn't heard of before. I always grabbed Scattergories and Jungle Speed.
I normally kick major tail in Scattergories, but this one had a twist! It was in SPANISH! It was a hoot! The people I played with alternated between English and Spanish. During one round, I was giving this guy a hard time because he didn't know what a pickle was, yet he knew AND had the audacity to put down "dildos" under "something people collect." His attempts to explain to the the table what a dildo was remains priceless!
Estar Cafe was one of my home away from homes. When you leave Estar's, your face will hurt from all the smiling and laughing! You'd think you had spent the evening with your family on a drunken holiday! read more
