My mother and I traveled to Madrid a few months ago and used this airport…read more It is a nice and clean airport. Our issue was finding the correct train to get to the airport from our Airbnb, which was a cluster but that doesn't have anything to do with the airport. The airport itself is pretty busy but we got through customs and got to our gate in a surprisingly decent time. Sadly the Starbucks in the area we waited in was closed but oh well. All in all, all of the employees we encountered were really nice and we had a good experience at this airport.

As New Yorkers, sightseeing buses have never really been our thing. Period. But when my party of 6…read morestrategically planned our trip to Morocco, we intentionally built in a long overnight layover so we could squeeze in a few cultural activities before coming home to the states. One part of that plan was- a nighttime Big Bus tour that began just a few hours after we landed from Tangier and ended up being a great decision. The double-decker bus is comfortable and has spacious seats. Thankfully, the weather was on our side. It was sunny, warm and yes, hot- but the beautiful evening made the ride even more enjoyable. The bus attendant(?) was welcoming and handed out brand new headphones that you plug right into the seat in front of you that came extra handy when the recordings pointed out city landmarks and monuments along the way. A special shoutout goes to the driver, who made the entire ride even better. They drove super smooth, never rushed the ride and made everyone feel relaxed, take in the sights and really enjoy the evening-nighttime city views. This was a fun and surprisingly relaxing way to experience the city during our layover and we made time for it.

There aren't a lot of signs, look for the Metro signs, almost all the workers at the airport take the train so they can direct you. The ticket machines can initialy be a little confusing, and some are inevitably out of order. Avoid the ones that read "for tourists" as they only dispense the more expensive package. What you want is a ten ride ticket with round trip airport. If there are two of you, both sets of tickets will be on the one card. Trains are frequent, so take your jetlagged time getting from the ticket machine down to the train stop.

[Note for entering the aiport: from any side, metro or driving, youcwill need to show a boarding pass. I came from the metro on a Wedsnesday at 10am and the entry line was only about 20 people and the attendant allowed one person to come in with me. The outside line if you drive seems a lot more confusing and long] If arriving from T4, the metro is just a skip away. For T1-3 its a good 15 min walk to check in and another 5min to TSA if you walk at a good upbeat pace. [FYI on Dec 2025 you still have to take out liquids with the 3 oz rule, and remove your shoes.] Once you're through security, there are lots of places to eat and shop but be mindful of which gate you're departing from. My gate was A9 and after security it was an additional 15ish minutes. There were no proper signs once you got to A8 indicating where A9 was until i walked towards the restaurants and notice a flight of stairs going down with a sign reading A9-16. Once you're downstairs, there are no restaurants or shops and it gets chillier. You will have to take a bus to board so make sure youre not counting on sprinting through the gate at the last minute. There are also very limited seats. I was there 2 hours prior to boarding and got a seat, but an hour after there were no seats left. Wifi is free but limited plugs. I only took off 2 stars because the employees are neither friendly nor knowledgeable so beware of their directions. Whatever you do, do not come off strong or you will get NOWEHERE. I saw a couple get slightly frustrated and that only got them in a bigger problem. I also took out stars for lack of visible signage.

The traffic was bad and the departure gates were difficult to navigate. When we got dropped off, it was difficult to find an entry to the building where the doors would actually open. There were very few doors available and the doors had long queues to get in because they checked everyone's boarding passes at the doors. The door that we were able to enter in was over 100 check in desks from where we needed to be. The security line was also a little bit confusing. There was very limited signage, but they do require that electronics be taken out of the bags. The areas by the gates were not the most clean. A lot of the seats were dirty and there was trash in a lot of areas. The restrooms were fairly clean and there was good signage for finding gates.
