dog park is a hidden gem! It's on the smaller side, but it's always clean and well-maintained, which makes a big difference. Super easy to find and get to, with convenient parking nearby. there's plenty of room to run around without feeling overwhelming. The park itself is five star worthy- lots of parking, places to sit, beautiful views, and a walking track around the perimeter. I've brought my dog twice and he loved having the chance to roll around in grass, gallop after a ball, and play with new friends. Having said that, I doubt we'll be back since I saw in a local community group on social media that there was a kennel cough outbreak likely stemming from an infected dog at the park. My dog has his Bordetella vaccine but why take that chance? I've also read and heard a not small number of stories of unruly, poorly socialized dogs with careless owners on the large dog side. I don't want to risk my jolly, trusting mid-size dog getting bitten so we're going to stick with day camp and trusted friends. While I don't have a small dog so am not speaking from experience, the small dog side sounds safer and there seems to be a nice community of responsible regulars who frequently visit. If you're less of a risk-averse germaphobe than I am, you'll probably really enjoy this park and your furry family member will have a great time. read more

Located a short drive away from Black Rock Canyon Campground, Essig Park is a great destination if you are looking for a dog park or a recreation area for young children. There are two dog parks: one for smaller dogs and another section for larger breeds. Note: there is a sign posted stating that dogs need to be spayed or neutered before entering the fenced dog park. I don't own dogs, but I saw several of them playing extensively in the wide open spaces. There are water fountains for both humans and dogs, and it's a great diversion if your dogs have been leashed throughout your camping stay or cooped up in your car after a long drive. Nicely built dog park. Some regulars are nice but there is a couple who brings their aggressive bully pit mixes and they just watch until they beat up the other dogs and then pull them off laughing "he plays a little rough." And then are like: "You are being naughty, Toby." (Like the dog actually listens to that?) Totally unsocialized dogs (and people) that need to exercise their dogs somewhere else so other dogs can play in a safe fun environment. read more

This dog park is wonderful, the people who come here, the owners of the dogs and the dogs themselves. I've never had one single problem here at all. Everyone is social and the talk isn't just limited to animals. There is a playground adjacent the dog area which is completely fenced in and separate. One of the best things in Yucca Valley is the dog park. There are actually two, one for large dogs, the other for small (and sometimes larger, but elderly). Great place to meet other animal lovers. To get 5 stars, I would say the small dog park needs a shade area (how about building something that spans both areas...?. Also, it would be nice for additional human seating. But overall, it is kept clean, there is fresh water, bags for cleaning up, and the city takes good care of the park. Bravo! read more

I like this dog park a lot. All grass. So nice. Two sides large and small. My dog is 25 pounds. We go to the smaller side. Everyone is attentive to their dogs in the small dog side. On the large side things can get a little more wild. My dog loves large dogs and occasionally we go to that side but only if certain dogs aren't there. read more

My dog loves his dog park time here. We didn't have a great experience in the beginning (bad owners with vicious dogs) but over time, those people who couldn't control their dogs and contribute to a pleasant experience for the rest of us eventually stopped coming. For the most part, owners take care of their dog's "business" so the fields are safe to walk around on. The view is lovely. I like that there is a small dog fenced area next to the large dog area to separate them. There is plenty of water available for dogs and humans. The adjacent park is a really nice one for families to hang out with bike and walking paths around. Once the trees grow up more and fill in, there will be better shade. We've been to several other dog parks within the So Cal region and Yucca Valley's Dog Park is up there with a good experience - largely due to the folks who use the park and understand how to manage pets so everyone has a fun experience. read more

This dog park is the best! I have an older chihuahua that I rescued a year ago and she's a bit unpredictable. She's very sweet with family and when I take her into Petco or the vet but she sometimes growls at neighbors and their dogs. I was nervous about taking her to a dog park. I went to this dog park at noon one day and nobody else was there. There are two separate, fenced areas for big dogs and small dogs. The grass is brown but sturdy and without mud patches like other dog parks. The small dog area is big and the big dog area is even bigger. They both have double gates, cement picnic tables, drinking fountains, clean water bowls, waste collection bags and a nice gravel type track around the outside edge of the grass. I walked around the track and got some exercise and my dog enjoyed running to catch up with me. I went another day in the late afternoon and there were several people and dogs in the small dog area. I put my little dog down and hovered around her, afraid she would growl or nip at the other dogs. The people there were so friendly and told me to stop worrying. My dog sniffed a bunch of dog butts and settled in. Now she loves going there. The people are nice. The dogs are sweet. The park is part of a bigger park with a restroom and playground. People fly kites there. Kids ride tricycles on the walks. The view is pretty! It does get windy and cold in the winter so bring a jacket and hat for yourself and something for your dog if they tend to get cold. I recently went to a Redlands dog park and it was a muddy mess and the people were cranky. I went to a Palm Springs dog park and a lady screamed at me and accused me of ignoring my blind dog. She threatened to call animal control! (It wasn't my dog!). The people here are not cliquey or bossy. They are interesting and fun. So glad to have this lovely resource in my area. read more
