An osteopathic clinic run by the lovely and experienced Gerry Carter, I came across this place by…read morechance. I was complaining about my on-going niggling back pain just as I stumbled upon Back in Brighton. I saw it as a sign of fate and went in and booked my first appointment. And I'm glad I did. The first appointment consists of a consultation covering your aches and pains, how and when it started, and what triggers it. Gerry then assigns you a series of treatments suited to your problem (mine being very minor it was a relatively short healing process), and then proceeds with the first osteopathic treatment. I must admit I was a bit taken aback by how intense osteopathy is - the deep tissue massage isn't the kind you get at your local spa, and the 'popping' of the vertebrae - all I can say is be prepared! However, not every treatment is the same, and it does get better over time. Gerry was extremely friendly, and did everything to make me feel comfortable. He also clearly knows his stuff, and gave me plenty of advice on how to improve my posture etc in order to keep the pain at bay. His clinic is beyond clean and comfortable, and if you're lucky you'll get to meet the cutest (and well behaved) little pup, who, if my memory serves me correctly, is called Spanky! After around 6 sessions my back was fixed, and I haven't experienced any pain since, and if I do I'll be heading straight back to him. Yes, he is a little more expensive than his local competitors, however your back is not something you want to take risks with, and Gerry was worth every penny.

Ash is absolutely lovely, professional and very informative on the potential risks and side effects of the procedure (Botox) and at no point did she try to sell the product so I would have felt completely comfortable leaving if I had decided against the procedure during the consultation. The procedure itself was over within about 5 minutes and the results have been fantastic. I noticed a difference the very next day and within 5 days the full result was achieved. Ash has been on hand to answer any follow up questions and She offers a top up 2 weeks later if needed at no extra cost which is brilliant after care. If like me you want to banish those annoying ageing wrinkles, Ash is definitely the lady to go to.

Admittedly, it's not the biggest gym in the world, but it has plenty of equipment to get a great workout including all the usual cardiac machines, weights machines, free weights (this area is very lady friendly, unlike other gyms I have experienced in the past), and TRX. They also have limited membership so the gym is never really crowded and I've certainly never had to wait for any of the machines. That said, my gym inductions weren't that successful, and for this Wickwoods loses a star. The first induction I had was good but the instructor was leaving the next day, and forgot to write down the program she had developed for me. The second time, the girl was incredibly moody as she had been booked by her colleague and didn't really have time. One very quick, abrupt tour of the gym later I had a program written down but a slightly sour taste in my mouth from the way I was treated. It's a shame as everyone else I have come across at the club has been really pleasant. As well as the gym, they have a studio room where they run numerous classes. The classes run by the gym instructors are better in my experience, the others can be a little 80's in style!! There is a beautiful pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room area that is just perfect to use after a hard workout in the gym. They also have inside and outside tennis courts, tennis coaching and tournaments - I may pick up my tennis racket again when the weather cheers up! I am yet to try the restaurant, although the carvery looks and smells fantastic on a Sunday - book in advance though, they never have room for us when we turn up after the gym. The bar area is a great place to stop for a coffee or something stronger - you have earned it by this stage of course! There are also treatment rooms which I plan to use in the very near future - there has to be some reward for all this hard work!

Coral Health & Fitness is probably the best value gym outside of Brighton centre. For students membership is a mere £20 a month and for that you get on and off-peak access to the gym, beauty salon and bar. Other good deals can be had if you're a couple in which case monthly membership will cost you £23.75 each. Unfortunately neither membership includes access to squash courts (£4.50 off-peak/ £6 peak). You'll also have to pay a little extra to take part in any of the extra classes, which include boxercise, circuit training and spin classes. Both rooms of the gym are well stocked with every piece of apparatus you could ever need. The bonus for me is the small free-weights section that allows more space for machines, thus decreasing the amount of steroid-fuelled nutters you find in other gyms. Avoid evenings between 7-9pm, as these are the busiest times (I'd suggest visiting around midday during the week). If you need a few minutes to recuperate after your workout you can always chill out upstairs where the bar and kitchen will serve you everything from protein shakes to chilli con carne. All the staff are incredibly friendly and are often willing to give you free tips about how to improve your work out. It's no David Lloyd but for the money you can't complain.

With its own licensed bar you can stay and socialise for a while or indulge in a range of drinks and hot and cold food. For me it's the best value gym in Hove as it's impeccably maintained and well staffed. You'll never be far from a friendly trainer who'd be happy to give you some free exercise tips. The aerobic room is fully stocked with every machine you'd expect including treadmills, cross-trainers, bikes, spin machines and steppers, along with a matted area that comes with various exercise balls and crunch machines. Every wall is plastered with helpful diagrams and information so that you're never at a loss. The resistance room is separate to this and due to its bias toward machines as opposed to free-weights it isn't the kind of place frequented by many over-inflated steroid types. That said, the free-weight section is decent if a bit small and many of the machines are adaptable to varying needs. It's great for students as it's only £20 per month and if you're a couple you could get a joint membership for as little as £23.75. The squash courts cost £4.50 or £6 for off-peak and peak times respectively, however, the price isn't included in any membership package. Despite this I think it's the best value gym in the vicinity.
