Stopped by here on accident because I drove by and found the place. My brother came into town for work so I was only visiting for a little while to wish him happy birthday and figured since I found the place, we would stop by real quick for picture in front of the ESPN sign. We stopped our car, put our blinkers, and got out to take the pictures. A lady drove by, stopped and told us it was private property and we couldn't be there. I told her we were just visiting and wanted to take a picture and she repeated that we couldn't be there because it was private property. She then drove off. ESPN needs to step up their game and create a spot where it is ok for people to take a picture vice being told to get off the property. So simple to do. We finished taking our pictures and left but it definitely left a bad impression on us, someone who likes watching ESPN and only wanted to get a picture.

It's a virtual College Gameday Saturday. I'll take it.

I have been a fan since the early days when they hooked me with their College Baseball Game Of The Week every Sunday. Now I can't believe how important they are to me for my tv viewing. If I could get a cable package that just included my local tv stations, ALL of the ESPNs, a few of the other sports channels and the Weather Channel then I would be a pretty happy camper. So many of the announcers have become like good friends. Sportscenter has become as important as the news. I can't imagine a Saturday in the fall without College Gameday to get me excited about that day's games. With the addition of streaming, I can watch college baseball games from all over the country and from conference tournaments through the College World Series I am in heaven. They have come a long way from broadcasting softball tournaments and minor college sports to being the major source for all sports, both professional and amateur and it has been a great ride. Here's to many more years of excellent sports programming.

As the British PM condemns racism towards soccer players, Steven A Smith spews racism and xenophobia directed at Shohei Ohtani

ESPN used to be a great destination for sports news. They have gone downhill the last few years, but the racism and xenophobia that this network spews and tolerates is really upsetting. Here are a few examples: Steven A. Smith: On the program First Take, Smith goes on to spew racist and xenophobic comments about Shohei Ohtani an all star MLB baseball player that has talent we haven't seen in 100 years. First player to be selected as an All Star as a pitcher and a position player. Currently leads the league for home runs at 33. Only Babe Ruth did this 100 years ago. Background info on Shohei: In the Year of Shohei Ohtani, MLB's Stars Are Celebrating the Greatest of Them All - https://www.si.com/mlb/2021/07/13/shohei-ohtani-all-star-game-daily-cover Here is the First Take segment that aired 7.12.21 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oB_sZQIbUxQ Some key quotes from the video: Molly: "Is this good for Major League Baseball that Ohtani is the top attraction?" Smith: "Not to me. Even though baseball is an international sport. If you are a star, and you need an interpreter, that might have something to do with your inability to ingratiate yourself to the young demographic." Clearly this was a well thought out question and answer, it wasn't a heat of the moment response. "This brother is special, make no mistake about it. But the fact that you have a foreign player that doesn't speak English, that needs an interpreter believe it or not, I think contributes to harming the game to some degree when that's your box office appeal. It needs to be somebody like Bryce Harper, Mike Trout, those guys, and unfortunately at this moment in time, that's not the case." -Smith. So to understand this, Ohtani is a brother? But in the very next sentence, he's a foreigner and since he is not fluent in English, he harms the game of baseball? Baseball apparently needs a white man as the face of the sport right after Smith emphasized how Major League Baseball's popularity is in trouble and struggling miserably since the fan demographic is getting older right after he says the lack of diversity hurts the game. WTF? The reality is that Smith did not screw up. He did not misspeak. He's very articulate and prepares his commentary before going on the air. This was not a "heat of the moment" comment after losing a game or fight. These were well thought out comments that revealed Smith's racist and xenophobic ideas. He could have summed up his whole piece by saying: "Since Ohtani is Japanese, a foreigner, not a citizen of the US, and most importantly doesn't speak English fluently, he hurts the game of baseball. The MLB needs a white man like Bryce Harper or Mike Trout to be the face of the sport. Not some Asian guy with the name Shohei Ohtani." Lack of allies: Both the host Molly Qerim and co-commentator Max Kellerman didn't object to Smith's racism and xenophobia. Worse, Max says: "Steven A. Smith is not a racist. He's an anti-racist." Uh, ok, but his entire piece was both racist and xenophobic. So can a non racist person make multiple racist statements? This reminds me of when Yao Ming came into the league and Shaq threatened him with racist language and gestures. Phil Jackson quickly said, "Shaq is not a racist." Note that Smith's xenophobia is not limited to Asians. Hear what Smith said about the Nigerian team that beat the USA basketball team. He didn't pronounce their names and doesn't even care to get it right. https://sports.yahoo.com/nigerian-basketball-team-slams-stephen-a-smith-espn-after-butchers-names-first-take-shohei-ohtani-014632034.html Apologies after such a racist statement usually focus on several points: I was quoted out of context I am the victim I am not a racist Comments were accidental or unintentional Several people were offended, and I am sorry they were offended. (note that they are not sorry for what they said or for being racist...) I am a _______ or I have an ________ wife, so I can't be racist. This is playing the race card. Since I'm Black, I can't be racist. Since I have an Asian wife, I can't be racist. Rachel Nichols - An ESPN sportscaster was recorded having a conversation with the Adam Mendelsohn. According to The NY Times, "Nichols discussed her career on a phone call on July 13, 2020, with Adam Mendelsohn, the longtime adviser of the Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James and James's agent, Rich Paul. Nichols was speaking with Mendelsohn to request an interview with James and his Lakers teammate Anthony Davis, whom Paul also represents. During the conversation, she also sought advice from Mendelsohn because she believed her bosses were advancing Taylor at her expense." https://www.nytimes.com/2021/07/04/sports/basketball/espn-rachel-nichols-maria-taylor.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-tr4X0KhIs Apology https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7T3fUMT4T8 "Just find it somewhere else. You are not going to find it with me and take my thing away." - Nichols Not watching ESPN anymore.

Basically this is the Mecca of sports. It's like going to the X-Men school for the gifted and the Wonka Factory at the same time. At every turn and down any corridor you can and will run into an athlete or an analyst or someone that is important to getting sports news. Being able to see the actual filming stages was mind blowing. Our guide was good but not great. But the experience was still overwhelming. Only gets 4 stars because the gift shop was closed, and due to the antics of drama queen AB84 the sports center studio was on fire because we were there as the news was unfolding. So we basically heard the news before the world... Any sports fanatic should visit Bristol,CT and for any non sports watching spouses, you should go too and enjoy the faces and pure enjoyment of being in such a historical place.

When I first moved to central CT, I was super excited when I realized how close ESPN was to me, and then I found out if you know someone who works there you can set up a tour! Now I'm not huge into watching ESPN or many sports for the matter besides football, but I had friends who were coming to visit me and they were super excited to get a tour at ESPN. The tour was pretty long and they allowed you to walk through most of the campus. It was cool to see the different sections of the business and all the different tedious jobs people do. They even allowed us to sit in the famous ESPN chairs! They allowed picture taking and everything, it was an awesome experience, thank you ESPN!

    Look for this place!

I stopped at the ESPN headquarters during my epic cross-country tour (http://KananAcrossAmerica.blogspot.com) and I was hoping there were tours available for fans. Unfortunately the guard told me that wasn't an option. I watch ESPN and listen to ESPNRadio all the time, and there are many shows I enjoy: Around The Horn, PTI, SportsCenter, College Gameday, SportsNation, The Herd, and The Scott Van Pelt Show. Their commercials are also very funny! :) Unfortunately, they happen to have a company-wide bias against my favorite teams, but rather than list the teams ESPN doesn't like, it would be easier to just list the teams ESPN does like: New England Patriots, All New York Teams, Boston Red Sox, LA Lakers, all SEC football teams, and all ACC and Big East basketball teams, LeBron James and Brett Favre. That's it! You like any other team, they'll probably not say anything positive about them, even if they are winning, like the Texas Longhorns, who they constantly lobby against, if I'm to believe ESPN, TCU and Boise State can easily beat them...

Do I really need to state a case as to why ESPN is so awesome? If I do, then you're probably a very bored individual . . .
