Chips and salsa
Ana M.

This is place just opened right down my street so we wanted to try it. It was packed but the place was big and had plenty of of servers. We were greeted and served chips and salsa. We then got a hot sopa. We placed our orders and waited a short while since it was packed and then they brought our food. I was not at all pleased I ordered puffy tacos and my shells were hard, the beans had no flavor needed more salt and coming but the rice was good. I believe the owner was walking around asking everyone how was the food and my husband was not going to say anything but I did mention it to her so she said she would make them aware. I waited for my review because I know first days can go either way but my husband has gone for breakfast and lunch on separate days and has had to complain. I will probably go by myself again just to give it the benefit of the doubt.

Food is okay, service is fast. Make sure you take someone that knows Spanish cause they don't know English.

Love ordering breakfast tacos here. Their tortillas are soft, the salsa is hot, the tacos are cheap, fresh and huge!

The food is upscale traditional Mexican fare but has most of your usual options like enchiladas and fajitas. We always start with chips and salsa. Their salsa is freshly made with tomatoes and onions. We always go at dinner time and have had a variety of dishes. I'm partial to their fajitas or steaks while my husband goes with their Fonda plate of enchiladas with a side taco. But don't miss out on their specials. Every month or so their are seasonal specials. Most recently we both had a wood fired pork chop with poblano mashed potatoes and cabbage and garbanzo bean casserole with a slightly spiced chile sauce. It was divine!! The food is always delicious and beautifully presented. It's clear that the chefs pay attention to details. The staff are always helpful and attentive. You don't want to pass on dessert either. Their empanadas are seasonal. BlackBerry are my favorite. Recently the option was Apple pie, for the fall season La Fonda on Main is one if those comforting places we return to over and over and is one of those places to take out of town guests who want local, non-chain atmosphere and food.

Would rate 8/10 and definitely on the list to come back.

We ordered the half chicken ($11), and I was honestly surprised by how juicy and moist it still was inside. The outside had a wonderful smoky charcoal flavor, and the marinade was flavorful all the way through. It also came with rice, corn tortillas, red and green salsa, grilled jalapeño, lime, and grilled onion, so it was a really filling meal for the price. We also tried the Bean Burger ($9.79), which was a fun combination of a beef patty, refried beans, cheese, chipotle sauce, and pico de gallo. I enjoyed it, although I personally would have loved a thicker layer of beans. The green salsa was SO good that I ended up buying an extra container for about $5 to take home. The restaurant itself is very casual and no-frills, with a big charcoal grill that really adds to the atmosphere--you can see and smell the chicken cooking. It feels much more like a local neighborhood spot than a polished tourist restaurant. Service was also very friendly and attentive. Even though we arrived late, we never felt rushed, and our server checked on us several times to make sure we had everything we needed. I would absolutely come back for the chicken and green salsa.

Service was fast and attentive, searing took a little bit but this place is always busy so expect a short wait. The atmosphere was bustling with customers and hungry folks. We had…read morewanted to try Iron Cactus earlier in our trip but were too tired that evening to make the walk from our hotel. Now that we happened to be nearby, this was our opportunity. It was a hot Sunday afternoon, so there was no debate about where we wanted to sit. We headed straight for the wonderfully air-conditioned dining room, which provided a welcome break after spending time in the sun during our river cruise. Gabby was our server, and she was fantastic. She was friendly and attentive, took our order right away, and delivered our drinks promptly. What impressed us most was how she kept our drinks refilled without us ever having to ask. Her service was outstanding and made an already enjoyable lunch even better. The food was just as impressive. Our Mexican entrées were delicious and exactly what we needed after a hot afternoon on the River Walk. Between the excellent food, Gabby's attentive service, and the comfortable, modern dining room, Iron Cactus turned out to be the perfect place to relax and recharge. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and will definitely return the next time we're in San Antonio. Next time, though, we'd like to come back for dinner and experience Iron Cactus in the evening.
