The good: spacious campsites, clean restrooms and campsites, quiet and away from the more touristy areas of SEKI. Cool brook running through the camp. Lush coniferous forest and some nearby hikes. Lots of wild blackberry bushes if you go in season. The bad: no bear boxes and trash cans that do more to encourage bears to stick around than to stick to natural forest foods. Had a bear trying to get at the trash 25 feet from our tent about once an hour from 11 to 2:30am two nights in a row. Long drive into Kings Canyon if you are visiting the park.

Wow what a campground! It is so secluded and tucked away into a such a beautiful area. We visited over labor day weekend and even though the grounds were full, you wouldn't know it. It was superbly quiet! Steve the camp host was awesome and so accommodating. Bathrooms were in tip top shape. No running water in bathrooms, but a spigot available outside. Lots of beautiful sites available, ours backed up right into the creek and we only had a campsite on one of side of us so it was pretty private. We were able to take our chairs and plop them right into the creek and hang out there for quite a while. A nice little nature walk is available nearby through the meadow, and at night you can head out there and the view of the stars is unreal. The only thing you may want to consider (depending on what you'd like to do there) is that its probably an hour drive to get into Sequoia national park. So if you're interested in doing that, be aware you'll have to get back down the mountain to go back up on the other side.

I almost don't want to leave such a rave review because I don't want people learning about this secret gem in the Sequoia National Forest. The campsite is beautiful, peaceful, and well-kept. The vault toilets are clean! Huge reason for all of this is because camp host Steve runs a tight ship. Thank you Steve! We didn't have to deal with loud noisy campers at night. We were a backroad adventure away from the national park. We had fresh, drinkable spring water at our disposal. There is a nice little meadow and a creek you can walk to. No close opportunities for hiking, but you can't have it all. When it's hot it does get a little bug infested (flies that don't bite), but not as bad as other sites where I've been. Pro Tip: You do have to drive through a windy country road to get there. It wasn't bad on the way up, but can be a doesie if you drank the night before. Per my parks and rec list here on yelp, 5 Knopes in my book :)

Spot 16

The campground and Steve the host get 5 stars. Everything was well maintained and even on fri/sat night with the campground full, we hardly heard anything after ten. We stayed in 16 with our 18 ft trailer and ram 1500 quad cab with no issues. Originally I wanted spot 6 but was concerned about fitting. I looked over 6 and we would have fit there too without issue. At 16 I was able to place my solar panel in a spot where I got sun from 11 to 6, which was plenty of time to keep my battery fully charged (early June). I don't have a single negative for the campground. My only negative is for the road between eshom and the national park. I drove it 5 times in 3 days, it is right around 4 miles and took 27 to 35 minutes because of the condition. I was driving my stock Ram 1500 4x4 in 2wd the whole time. I would not recommend the road a passenger car or minivan unless you plan to take 45 to 50 minutes and are experienced driving on rutted dirt roads. There was one location where you could get even a stock 4x4 stuck if you weren't paying attention. Last thought, we came in through Hartland and although most of the drive is on a narrow windy road, it isn't to bad even towing a trailer. There were several trailers in park on Friday and Saturday larger than my ECON 18 RBS.

How is the bear activity there in July?

Bear activity is common and expected in the Eshom Campground area of Sequoia National Forest, especially in July when food sources might be scarcer, so expect bears to be active.

We asked about poison oak and the camp host, Steve, informed us that it had all been cleared.

Island Park Campground - Camp Ground

It was a Friday night; Memorial Day weekend, 2024; and we hadn't made a campground reservation yet…read more (Lesson learned!) Kings Canyon was completely full, but Recreation.gov showed that Island Park Campground still had 2-3 sites available. We weren't familiar with the campground, but it was kind of on our way between Kings Canyon and Santa Cruz, CA -- our next destination. Sited on a lake, it looked good in the photographs, so we made a reservation for one of the available tent sites where we would stay in our Class B RV. Our GPS took us along a picturesque, but narrow and windy road, and we eventually came to beautiful views of the lake. (Route out, towards Fresno was easier). Our site was interesting. The paved parking space for our Class B RV was significantly sloped. However, there was a flat tent site, fire ring, and picnic table directly overlooking the beautiful lake. We peacefully sat at the table enjoying the afternoon sun, and watching a few kayakers. We later walked around the campground. There was a section with larger RVs, with families that seemed to know each other. Kids were swimming and freely running around. People were walking their dogs. Others were cooking dinner on their grills. Upon further inspection, we were surprised to discover that there were campsites and a port-a-potty that were under water! (A ranger later confirmed that there had been recent flooding). Being Memorial Day weekend, the campground was full, and became increasingly noisy as the evening elapsed. However, the strangest thing happened around 2 am. We were fast asleep in our small RV when we were both awoken to the crackling of a fire just outside our backdoor. It turned out that the tent campers in the site adjacent to us decided to start a large fire in their fire pit at that crazy hour and it was right next to where we were trying to sleep. Pros. Beautiful setting with views of the lake and hills. Water activities. Friendly and helpful rangers. Well-priced, especially with NPS discount for seniors with passes. Free showers. Pleasant temperatures in late May. Cons. Noisy and crowded on Memorial Day weekend. Many sites are too close together. Lake itself was flooded, with some campsites under water. Ladies bathroom near sinks was flooded, which attracted bugs.

I'd give this place a 4.5 stars if I could. They lost half a star because the bathrooms were…read moredisgusting. It appeared they cleaned it maybe once a day. But it was stocked with toilet paper. Other than that the campgrounds was great. I love the fact the market is reasonably priced. They have a Cafe, showers, cleaner restrooms, and a laundry facility. The campsite was beautiful. Not too many bugs. Everywhere you looked it was beautiful. There's lots of campsites nearby but not too close. Our campsite was 202, right behind the large rock and pretty close to the river. It was nice hearing the rush of water throughout the day. The bathroom was close enough except for during the the night. Knowing that bears are in the area made it really scary going in the middle of the night. Wear a headlamp, it's much better than a flashlight. The shuttle will come inside the campgrounds and pick you up near the restrooms in the main parking lot. There are a few trails for hiking (which we didn't have time to do). I do recommend if traveling with another family to work out the food situation because there's only one bear box per site. One large cooler can fir or two smaller ones. One large and one small cooler will not fit in the box. ALL food, snack, even perfume, & body spry should be put into the bear box.

Really beautiful area to camp at. Right next to the Three rivers. There is plenty to do every day:…read morehiking, fishing, dipping in the many pools. We've been here multiple times and this time the water was very much filled with algae in the upper areas near the waterfall and cleaner as you went through towards the bridge. Make sure to test the rocks before you step on them or you might slip! Each campground spot has a fire pit (with a very annoying and disgusting swiveling grill on top), and a bear box. I would say the amount of space you get per spot is pretty spacious compared to some other campgrounds. There are potable faucets throughout the campground and bathrooms nearby. The bathroom isn't very clean and only four stalls so there is a wait sometimes but the faucets are motion sensored which is very convenient. There are a lot of interesting bugs at this camp site. And a lot of chipmunks. If they find any scraps they'll be coming back often. We had to scare them off to stop them from coming and digging into our bags. There is a ranger truck patrolling the area at all hours and will stop by your camp site to find things you're doing wrong. We got a warning for leaving out unscented (free and clear) hand soap. And the ranger picked up our trash bag with a few blow out diapers and shoved it on top of our baby food inside the bear box. If you look at the bear box label it tells you to put your kids car seats in there but you are provided a box that will not fit them and all your other stuff. Cross your Ts and dot your Is.
