Smells like molding water as soon as you walk in. The dogs are given paper strips to lay on. They look like they haven't been cleaned in months. I saw a dog that peed significantly in their small room and was stuck with it. I saw an employee shove a dog back into the display with a metal bowl. Soo. I believe the law in California was you can only sell rescues. You got to be a fool to believe these are rescues. As if you're going to find Shiba Inu puppies out and about on the streets. $3500 for a Pomeranian? An abandoned Pomeranian for $3500. Sketchy all around. Since the new pet store law went into effect on 1/1, all of the animals in this store magically come from Menifee (southern Riverside County). This is quite curious since all of the animals used to come from the Midwest (Missouri, Ohio, Indiana). What does this mean?The store has always insisted their animals come from "reputable breeders." If this is true, how come there aren't any Midwest animals anymore, which is where most of the commercial breeders (mills) and targets of this new law are located? Interesting that things would change so quickly after such a law goes into effect. Another theory: nothing has actually changed except the diction as animals are now transported from the Midwest to a distribution center in Menifee, then transported again down here. Through a legal loophole, the store can cite Menifee as the origin of each animal since it was the most recent stop in the transportation process. This is true in the dog food industry with low quality kibbles; companies are only required to list a responsible party for the product's manufacturing rather than where the food was sourced from. Something similar may be happening here. These dogs shouldn't be here. The kennels are particularly small for the larger pups. Proportionally, they're smaller than a shelter kennel. The reality is these aren't "rescue" pups either. Perhaps the mill/distribution center in Menifee operates as a 501(c)(3) and can claim themselves as a "rescue" even though they're totally not. The thing about rescue animals is you DON'T know where they came from. So if the store is claiming these are rescues while also saying EVERY SINGLE PUP was born in Menifee or whatever the heck they're claiming, then they're clearly contradicting themselves. I'm not anti-puppy. Of course not. I've had three golden retriever puppies in my life with each one more difficult to get than the last. Honestly, that's kind of how it should be if you're going to a reputable breeder. Those types of breeders DO care about the dogs and aren't going to give them to any Joe Schmo with a checkbook. I have also volunteered in a shelter for 8 years. I see the pros and cons of both adoption and buying. But a pet store like this? Nah. If it's a puppy you want then find a real breeder. I suspect this place will eventually close down and that will be for the best. read more

She then answered " Because their older at 6 months and mixed . We had looked for a dog here and the workers tried to haggle with us and provide cheaper pricing to my husband compared to what they quoted me. I thought that was fishy... we did our research and were astonished by the poor reviews from people who actually purchased animals homes to only find sick animals. I'm so happy we ended up going to an authorized breeder and have AKC paperwork for our full bred. And I paid 1/5 the price these people are even asking for. read more

I wanted to get my Malamute a sister and came on here to send them a message since I got a malamute from them last year. Michael was great and my puppy is healthy and I haven't had an issue. I decided to read the reviews and its pretty sad to see how a business owner responds to the public in such a condescending tone. Obviously complaints or any negative feedback she gets will never be handled correctly. I'm assuming the woman in the filtered pic with the bright red hair is the owner, who offers more than 1 person to "speak to a manager", I came to the pet store 3 times before finally leaving with my dog and each time I went Michael had to text the owner/manager with any questions that he couldnt answer. As another person mentioned, Michael was texting the owner and had to go back and fourth a few times with her before we were able to get everything we wanted for the price we paid. Its obvious the Owner prefers to go back and fourth through text messages with her employees. I'm glad my malamute turned out healthy but would rather not deal with them again since I see how the owner handles complaints. It's disgusting how sarcastic and unprofessional all the responses have been. Especially to Michelle H. and Lauras reviews, why even answer if it's not to make things right? Almost each person that gave a 1 star were concerned for the puppies because of the smell, poor customer service and the dirty cages. Instead of taking each review so personal and being obnoxious - Why not fix the problem? clean the cages, change the amount of puppies per cage, train your employees that they need to be interacting with customers and not eachother. Walked in the store and it had a strong odor of something I couldn't pinpoint (not good smell). Then made it to the middle of the store and there was this pup shaking in his on urine. There seemed to only be one employee today (4/14 at about 10:30/11 am) and she was on the phone the entire time. At first it was a conversation about rates, so I assumed it was a client conversation. But then she stared to talk about her son and arguing about who was going to pick him up. We switched the the "clean" side of the kennel to "dirty," tried to tell her about this pup (but she wasn't paying anyone any attention) then left. read more

I've always been eerie of places like this because I know this type of places gets their dogs from puppy mills. However, when I go to the mall with friends they beg to go in. The first time I went it was when it first opened. The place smelt like a combination of dog poop and mildew. Multiple puppies were crammed into small kennels. However, the puppies seemed pretty happy and healthy. The second time was a few months later. The place reeked even more of poop and mildew. It was so strong my eye watered. Many of the puppies were inactive. Two dogs had ribs that were extremely visible. I had to leave before I started crying in front of everyone. I don't personally have a dog but seeing them treated this way is awful. Decided to look up this place on Yelp and saw many sad stories of people's puppies being sick immediately after purchase and many eventually dieing. It is also upsetting that the staff didn't care or even offer a refund. I recommend everyone to report this place to ASPCA. read more

Was told the puppy was one price and once we were attached and the kids were excited they increased the price by $800. They then said they would throw in food, a dog bed, toys, leash and collar to compensate the the price problem. We picked out all the items and then they said the manager changed her mind and we could only get the leash. Last I had heard pet stores had been banned from selling puppies from puppy mills in California, so I was in shock when I saw this pet store now called Bark Avenue that claims to be a "rescue" in the North County Westfield mall tonight. It peaked my curiosity so my husband and I went inside. The areas these poor puppies are being contained in is sad and disgusting. They had a fairly large labradoodle, husky, and Dalmatian puppy in very small enclosures. What also seemed to be weird was that all these "rescues" were puppies and the insanely high prices they are charging for apparent "rescues". I have a rescue dog myself and have been to many rescues that charge fairly reasonable prices that almost anyone could afford given that the goal is to get these animals a forever home. The prices on two of the puppies there were advertised at $1500 & $1800. Since everything about this store enraged me I decided to do some research and found a recent article published by NBC 7 news on June 13, 2019 stating the following: The San Diego Humane Society's (SDHS) law enforcement team conducted a sweep of local pet stores on Wednesday and found violations of California's AB 485 at three locations: Broadway Puppies in Escondido, Bark Avenue in Escondido and Pup & Pets in Santee. Video footage captured by the SDHS law enforcement team showed the uniformed officers enter all three locations and announce that they would be conducting a sweep of the stores. The SDHS said Broadway Puppies had at least 39 pets at the store that did not have proof that they were obtained from a local shelter; Bark Avenue had 38 pets in violation. My experience at Escondido Pets was horrible. The poor dogs are in tiny living spaces, these tiny puppies need a lot of space, and they can't get it. It's not fair that they have to stay in crates all day just so people can see them. When I was there I saw two dogs fighting, barking, and biting each other, while nearby their was two staff members talking and ignoring the fighting nearby. I am beyond devastated and shocked! This place is horrible and needs to be shut down! The poor puppies are suffering there. They are rolling around on newspaper shreds and poop! One puppy in particular really had me heartbroken. He wasn't moving and when he tried to get up he limped to the corner and just buried his face in the shreds. He was obviously hurt. We asked to see if we could play with him for a few minutes to gauge his personality. We've now had our puppy for almost 4months (purchased at 9wks during Thanksgiving holiday) and he is seriously heaven on earth! We have had no issues with him, his health, demeanor, etc. The shop even called to check in on us (how thoughtful!) and Fedex paperwork to us bc we live in the Bay Area. My boyfriend wandered in here while waiting for me to be done in another store. I followed him in a bit after and stood there shocked at how DISGUSTING this place is. I am appalled that a single person would ever buy a dog from this place. The owner of this establishment has no regard for precious life, or taking care of anything but herself and her wallet. For anyone who is actually going to buy an animal from this place just read this list of reasons why not to. 1. Price. All of these breeds are priced 100-300% higher than an actual quality, LICENSED breeder in California (or any state for that matter.) For example: they currently have a Miniature Australian shepherd listed at 3700$. Mini Aussie's from an actual accredited breeder range from 250$-1000$ on the high end. Sometimes more if they have puppy packages with different items included. 2. This IS a puppy mill. The breeders you can inquire about on each pet are either not real breeders, or completely non-existent. By buying a dog from here you ARE supporting over breeding (some moms are forced to have 2-3 litters a year), health defects, over-crowding, and unnecessary death. 3. To touch on the death part of the last one yes death is a common problem with Pet Stores that sell puppies like this. They are terribly treated by mill breeders then shipped off to stores like this all over the country where they are kept in SMALL CRATES, barely fed, and not fed water in dishes but through drip systems. I watched a brown lab drink for 20 minutes out of a little water bottle with a bar attached to it and barely get anything out. They are the water systems for rats and bunnies. There is pee and poop all over the cages and on the puppies. There are multiple large breed puppies stuck in small crates. Example: two huskys in ONE box together who are stretched out with barely any room to turn around. Some of the dogs were banging their heads against the walls and screaming for attention. They are all stressed and need to be in different enclosures. Some of them are laying down because they are sick and are getting trampled by other puppies. One male staff member claimed that the puppies get played with all day, but I stood watching for an hour outside and only the "cute" breeds like the gray Pomsky or one of the Husky's were taken out and roughly played with by children then put right back. He mistakenly informed me they stay in those pins for 24 hours a day as well if they are not taken out by a family to be played with. 4. GO TO A SHELTER OR AN ACTUAL BREEDER. You will get papers on their health history, their background, their behavior profile, and frankly a shelter will be picky on who gets to take home this precious dog. If you are a shitty person they will pick up on it and not let you take a dog home. Sorry to say but that's exactly how it should be. These animals are not toys for you or your children. Treat them like your kids or family. 5. Going to a shelter or breeder will save you money both on the adoption and VET BILLS! Shelters typically take care of all of the health needs for an animal and if they are injured or sick they will take care of that too. If there are additional needs they will let you know before you adopt an animal so you can decide if you want to take on that responsibility. Breeders will never send you home with a sick animal. And if there are some issues, again, they will let you know before you take one home. In conclusion, we will be getting signatures to get this place shut down, and we will report them to the city. Do not conduct business here! They will probably be forced to shut down come January 1st, 2019 anyway. A new law will be in affect where pet stores can only sell rescue animals. read more

Even though it is a puppy mill store I love how much the employees care for the dogs. Each one show such kindness to not only the animals there but also the customers in the store. My recommendation for this store is to acquire bigger kennels only because puppies do need lots of space to run and play. Also another one would be to put a fan for some of the dogs. Horrible shady staff! I go to ask about two Rottweilers they had displayed, curious about their unusually small size, I wanted to read more about her and her brother. I am a serious buyer, out on the market for my next Rottweiler, so I was attempting a knowledgeable inquiry before talk of buying. And this poor attitude employee responds with "We just don't like.. hand those out" so I quickly retorted with the most logical response one would have to that.. "So I have to buy the dog to see the records?" Oh and to top it all off, there was a sign on the wall informing how each dog has their records upon request. This place is horrible. STAY AWAY. The staff is completely clueless. I only walked in because my little cousins ages 5 to 10 wanted to see the pets. I asked all 5 staff members who were there about a black kitten ( because she looked like my Amy) .Nobody new the age or breed of the kitten. I asked about the other kittens.. All they new was the price.. 300 to 500 and 2k!!!!! for the siamese... The owner of this pet store adopts animals from shelter to sell them for a good profit. It smelled so bad and the shop was dirty. 1 kitten they had little orange fellow would not stop sneezing. Most likely a respiratory infection. Please go to the shelter and adopt. Rehoming fees are less than $100. And they will not be sick animals. I feel really bad for the animals at the shop. read more

It smells really good, the store is really clean, the puppies look well taken care of, and the staff is very attentive. You can tell that they take pride in what they do. If I hadn't already owned two dogs, I would have taken Violet, their chocolate lab. So I bought a bunny instead lol. Buyer beware--I understand Pet stores have to protect themselves against returns, but providing false information about the animal prior to purchase is disingenuous and fraudulent. The sales associate specifically said the mix is great with kids and other dogs. Upon arriving home we found quite the opposite. After talking with a dog trainer it became clear this particular mix was not good for children nor other animals. When we contacted the store they simply referred to their store policy. When I asked about the misinformation provided prior to purchase the manager simply shrugged. While I do not like throwing money away the most difficult part was telling my kids that we could not keep our new puppy. I think a few honest answers upfront (including if they didn't know how this mix would be with kids/other dogs) would have saved everyone a lot of emotional distress. I asked to see a rabbit when she told be I couldn't because they were currently in their hut and it would be basically impossible for me to view them. I visited this store yesterday and was disgusted by what I saw. Filthy display cases for pups with aged feces piling inside. Floors are unclean and staff look disorganized and seem to socialize rather than take care of the animals and monitor the visitors to prevent them from disturbing and distressing the animals. The staff does not attend to the visitors or request that they use hand sanitizer prior to and after touching the animals. The animals seem unhappy. This is all in addition to the obvious fact that the animals are from breeders (puppy mills) while so many animals are available for adoption from the pound and animal rescue organizations. I feel sorry for the animals who have to endure this treatment, especially knowing that some of them, if not purchased, are destined to go from foster home to foster home and/or pound/rescue organization or even euthanized. These are all beautiful animals who deserve loving homes with adequate vetting to ensure the right persons are taking them home which I doubt they receive from this establishment. This is a sad sight and I will not be visiting this store, or any like it, again. read more

I would give this a zero if I could. Please don't buy from this store to avoid heartache. On August 10th, I purchased a Shih Tzu mix for $1700 which we immediately fell in love with. I was informed by a young man that the puppy had a heart murmur #4 and that it probably would not go away. I asked if it was life threatening and was told that as long as we watched his weight and exercised him, he should be fine--so I signed the papers releasing the store from responsibility. Three days later, I took my puppy to the vet and was informed the puppy had a large hole in his heart and would not live for two years and probably a lot less. I informed the store I was mislead as to the seriousness of the heart murmur and would like to have half the cost reimbursed. They not only declined but were so rude and condescending. read more

Today was my first time in this pet store with my husband, at first glance I was happy to see adorable puppies, then as I looked in there cages I saw empty bowls, no water or food, no toys, no bed, they are kept in there cages in shredded paper which some of the puppies you could see chewing on the shredded paper....I then saw they had 3 puppies out, two were in a pen with 3 screaming children who were too young and hyper for the puppies. There was no worker telling these children to calm down, or to be gentle with these puppies. I then saw the sweetest puppy kept by herself in a pen who just wanted out of her pen. My hopes for an establishment like this would be that they provide clean cages with beds, toys, and also to keep food and water in there cages. I also would hope they would give better supervision on the puppies and give all of them time to run out of there cages. They charge over $800 for these puppies I think they can afford to provide proper care for them. I didn't think anymore of these stores existed since we have such a huge amount of animals that need rescue from the humane society. We do not need breeders. Tons of animals that need homes from the humane society. Which I will add give the dogs beds, water bowls and food, and outside time. And tons of volunteers to give them attention. I hope Escondido pets sees this and will step up on bettering there care for these innocent animals. read more
