Enter "Escape Folsom" who provided a more engaging social interaction for those of us willing to take the risk with the Spirit & Heat of the 1800s 49ers Miners and Saloons! THE SETUP The whole idea of escape rooms is to put together a small group of people - ideally about eight (8)? - and give us some basic cryptic instructions on how we escape a room / wing of a building / structure. Some of these clues were MORE than cryptic. We were thrown into what looked like a bar from the 1890s in Old Sacramento. Old Register. Old timey phone. Old bar tops and stools. And yet some more modern items like a cigarette machine and a jukebox from the 60s. * Any string of numbers we saw could be a clue, such as the numbers we spotted on the telephone and the jukebox; * Any weird box with a number lock hold a clue if we could just unlock the lock; * And repeating songs we heard containing digits could hold the answer too. It took a some time trying to figure out what numbers went to which locks, and which items needed to be unlocked in sequence with reference to the other items. Yada Yada Yada, we DID IT! With 8 minutes of our hour left! THE BAR Escape Folsom's bar is legit. Post up. Grab a drink while you wait for the rest of your crew to show up. Or even host a quick birthday - like we did - for our friends Bambi and Kristen when we finally finished our escape - in their comfy bar nooks and rooms. GOOD TIMES. This review is only for the food and bar, haven't had a chance to do one of the rooms yet, but hoping to one day! Came here with a group of friends for trivia night. The place gets packed and is pretty lively. They have a full bar and some really good Mexican food! I ordered a few tacos, carnitas and sweet corn, and they were both delicious! The tacos came as 3 small street tacos so you definitely want to order more than one if you're really hungry. Friends tried some of the other taco options and a few quesadillas. Everyone was really happy and enjoyed their food. Will definitely be coming back for more food, fun, and trivia! read more

This place gets five stars not just because the escape room was a ton of fun but also because Pip and the bartender on staff (I forgot his name I'm sorry!) we're truly some of the best service staff I've ever interacted with in my life! We had an escape booked through two friends who had babysitter delays and then their car broke down on the way over, but Pip couldn't have been more understanding! He offered a later reservation time and after getting everything figured out with our friends, offered to run two escape rooms at the same time so we didn't have to sit around for multiple hours and could just go when the other reservation was going. The bartender also gave my boyfriend a free beer after hearing us on the phone multiple times trying to work out the plans with our friends lol As an experienced escape room player I thought the room was also great! Not too complicated and not too easy with fun puzzles and a great theme! Chose this place for our team building event for work. There were 14 of us and we split into two rooms. Both teams had a lot of fun and really enjoyed working together to figure out how to get out. There is however two different rooms right now, the Yager's Tap House, and Escape the Prison, word is the Yager room is the harder of the two so if your looking for a challenge then you may want to choose that option. This is my new favorite place to meet friends in Folsom! We can grab a bite to eat. Enjoy a craft beer or glass of wine. They even have two escape rooms with three more on the way! Did I mention that they are family friendly? The bar staff is very friendly and made my 6-year old son feel right at home. I would suggest getting 8 friends together and trying both escape rooms. We ventured into Escape folsom last night and had a blast. We were in the prison room and while I won't give any pointers or secrets away, it was well designed, well layed out and pretty damn hard. We had 5 adults and 2 kids and were about 15 seconds away from getting out, In fact, I had said the final clue outloud when the clock hit 0:00 the game master came in and looked at me and said "you had it right". I was pretty mad! But happy my family got through as well as we did. It's great seeing the old Yagers being used in such a fun way, can't wait to go back. The staff that helped us were top notch, the game master was helpful without giving away too much and very accommodating to us in and outside of the room. Definitely something to get some adult friends together to split the bill and have a good time. As they add more rooms it will be super awesome, as id be afraid this is a 1 and done experience for adults as they will simply remember how to get out, if the rooms are not ever changing. My organizing group and I were looking for an establishment to host a social to the augmented reality game called Ingress, the first game made by Niantic who also made Pokemon Go. Ingress is a GPS location based game where two teams are pit against each other to claim territory. The aim for this Ingress First Saturday event was to being the two teams together for some friendly light hearted game play. When Jim was contacted to ask if we can host, he seemed very excited to host us. Our events usually draw 75-100 people and Escape Folsom definitely had enough space for us. Jim and his staff was very accommodating to us while we were setting up for our event as well as all throughout the event. The place is very clean and there are two levels. First level where the bar is has your typical bar seating as well as separate tables as well for eating. The second floor that you go up by stairs has a small lounge area with more chairs and sofas. They have a lot of different selections of spirits and their food is delicious. I personally recommend the Pulled Pork Sliders! Jim made hosting this event very easy for us and the food is great. I've played a lot of escape rooms (this marks 180 of them), and I really liked the Prison themed room here. Yes, it was a bit difficult, but if you use your clues right it's definitely doable (I may play a lot, but I'm surprisingly not particularly good at escape rooms, haha). We were paired with 4 strangers, and thank goodness they were easy to work with! We had a lot of fun. As another Yelper mentioned, there is some use of tools in there that can throw you off. Bring a handyman (or handywoman, equality yeah! Haha) and don't be shy to ask for clues, and you'll have an absolute blast. The set design was great and it definitely had some unique fun puzzles that you won't find anywhere else. I'd recommend checking them out, you'll have a good time. read more

No spoilers below. I'm saddened to be leaving a poor review but ended up walking away frustrated and disappointed. This was the 10th escape room or so I had done and felt this one was poorly executed. I feel my disappointment in the room can be boiled down into three categories: props and non-intellectual puzzles, and breaks the rules. For reference, the room we attempted was Escape Prison. Props First, let me say this room was gorgeous. The atmosphere was cold and bleak, well fitting the theme of prison. The room provided a feeling of confinement, desperation, and absolutely encouraged exploration. Unfortunately, that's about where my compliments end. Props ended up being difficult to use in more ways than one. Some props were old and were difficult to use/understand due to their age. Other props, such as a keypad, needed an explanation on how to use. Over the course of the hour, about 30 minutes of our time boiled down to struggling to get props to function in their intended ways. Non-intellectual puzzles My largest criticism of this room is that it fails to understand the motivation of people that enjoy escape rooms. This room has a 15-20% success rate. While I originally assumed it was due to difficult puzzles, I now know it's due to difficult constraints. Rather than making puzzles more intellectually challenging, they opted for making them more physically challenging. The entire game is in low light making seeing very difficult. There is a light in the room but requires one person to hold down a button making that person unusable during that time (also making this room impossible for one person). One puzzle required dexterity, aim, and luck, punishing those who are short. I have complaints about most of the props in the room but can't go into detail without spoiling them in some form. Overall, puzzles are made more difficult by tying an arm behind your back and blinding you. Breaks the rules This room doesn't follow consistent protocol with all other escape rooms and even broke some of its own rules. This game could be broken/ruined by dropping a prop at the wrong time, was inconsistent about which props we were allowed to be touched, and required the players to take action that other escape rooms have rules against (and for good reason). Many things were overlooked because we thought, "no, they wouldn't make us do that." Unfortunately, we were wrong. This room is so close to being great. I really feel if the motivation of this room were to be re-examined to focus on mind over dexterity, everything else would fall into place. read more

This place was awesome! We came here early and ate a dinner. The food was so good!!! The Mac and cheese was so tasty, we also tasted the Brussels sprout which were delicious as well. We then conquered the Tap House room! The set was very well designed and and I really enjoyed the puzzles. It has a lot of great mechanical features that made the room very unique compared to the other rooms we have conquered. Definitely A+! Can't wait to try the prison escape room. My husband brought me ere for my birthday and it was so incredibly fun. We ended up doing both escape rooms, Escape from Prison and Escape from the Tap Room. My favorite was Escape from Prison. This place has a great beer selection and one of the ONlY escape rooms that actually serve alcohol that we could find. They also have a great food menu. We ordered the Brussel Sprout appetizer (very., very good) and the grilled cheese which had this amazing tomato jelly on it. Overall, I had a great birthday and an absolute blast trying to solve my way through the rooms. I hear they change the puzzles in the rooms every few months, I don't want to wait but I am definitely going to go back and try it out again once they switch them up. read more

Wow, what a gorgeous venue for an Escape Room! This place has really embraced all the exposed brick and created a lounge/bar area that oozes a classic industrial vibe. We're escape room enthusiasts visiting who wanted to introduce our dad to the experience and we had a great time playing the Yager Taphouse room. Our first 20 minutes didn't give us much immediate progress, which might have frustrated some groups, but once we got over the initial hump, things fell into place a bit quicker and we did manage to get out. This particular room is completely different than any other ER I've played before because 75% of the set contained original pieces of the famous bar from the 80s. That made me admire the skill of the designers because it's not easy to modify antiques into puzzles. After our escape, we enjoyed dinner at the in-house restaurant. The food leans toward light appetizer style food without many standard options (I don't think I noticed chicken tenders/fish n chips/burgers listed, which is fine, but surprising). I got the pastrami sandwich and it was delicious. If I lived in the area, I could totally see my friends bringing out board games here on a Friday night for a nice hangout spot. I definitely recommend giving it a try--even after you've played both rooms, I think it's just a cool hangout spot. read more

We are totally addicted to escape rooms thanks to Escape Folsom! We came in to grab some drinks and attempt to escape from the prison room. While we failed miserably in our attempt to escape, we had SO much fun trying! The room is intricately themed to really get you into the scenario, and as challenging as the clues were, we felt like everything was completely fair and progressed smoothly. Our escape room host was Travis, and he did an awesome job of guiding us when we asked for clues- I'm sure he could have made fun of us several times with how off track we were, but he was so kind and patient the whole way through! After our escape attempt we headed to the bar where Jessica took care of us. She was awesome, so attentive and sweet, and we ended up staying for hours to eat, try new beers, and hang out! We had so much fun celebrating my fiance's birthday last night, and it had everything to do with this place. We'll definitely be back to try a new room soon (or boost our self-esteem by finally escaping the prison room). read more

Best thing to happen to Old Town in years!! I took my management team here for a team building event and it was perfect! The owners Jim and Jim have put incredible attention to detail in each of the escape rooms. The rooms are themed around historic Folsom, and the building itself is historic! Be sure to have the owners tell your group the stories. Philip the manager was the perfect host for our event. He ran the escapade sessions perfectly (they are hard so bring your thinking caps) and also got my entire team situated in the bar area. They have a great selection of beets and a solid menu of surprisingly tasty food selections. The chef is clearly experienced at his craft. The staff was very attentive, friendly and were there to take care of anything the group needed. Like I said, best thing to happen to Folsom in years. I have planned two different birthday events, one for my best friend's 30th and the other for my husband's 36th birthday, at Escape Folsom and both times were wonderful!! Reservations for the escape rooms and restaurant/bar area were seamless, the atmosphere is always inviting and the staff is accommodating-- to say the very least! The restaurant menu offers a well rounded amount of options, and something for everyone in our group without being overwhelming. The bar has an endless amount of options and welcoming service. Both escape rooms were a lot of fun! They were challenging and well thought out. Even though we had a large group of 10 for the Folsom Prison room, there were plenty of puzzles and places to explore so that everyone felt involved and could contribute to our successful escape. My husband and I have done a ton of escape rooms, and the Yager's Tap House room was one of the first ones we've done that I wasn't sure we would make it out of! (For the record, we did make it out with 5 minutes to spare, but it was challenging!) Super fun. We love this place! This is the second time I have visited this place and it was just as great as the last time! For some reason Yelp removed my first review, claiming I reviewed the wrong business. Really weird because it was a glowing review of both the establishment and the employee we had the pleasure of working with. The first time we came we did a beginner/easy level room and it was a blast! We were able to escape with less than 2 minutes left! The gentleman who checked us in was awesome! He was totally in character which made the experience 10 times better! The second time we visited we did a moderate level room, because we had more people, and it was definitely harder! We had to call for clues a few times and we were so close to escaping a second time! I do wish that they offered more beginner rooms for larger parties (we had 7 people) as almost all of the party were first timers but we still had a great time and will definitely be back as they have now opened a new room for up to 8 people! read more

Only speaking on the bar portion. Great bar, great cocktails, but why do they do karaoke on Friday nights? They play it at a deafening level where you will have to yell to the person across from you to have a conversation. This could be a really good spot, but you will watch people walk in and almost immediately walk out once they hear how loud and obnoxious the karaoke is. Escape Folsom is a hidden gem of a restaurant! You don't have to be going to the escape rooms to enjoy this place. The bar has a good variety of beer and wine and the food is amazing. Went to lunch yesterday and found the restaurant to uniquely appointed in a 1850's building. The attention to detail. The appetizers were uncommon yet fantastic. I had the grilled cheese sandwich which was the best I've ever had. A tomato jam was added to the cheese which made the the sandwich uniquely fantastic.
