    Schererville Animal Control & Shelter

I adopted 2 domestic black cats: Leo & Midnight. They came as a pair. Background check, application…read moreprocessed, only $60.00 they both were microchip, vaccinated, spayed and neutered, ventinary check up to deem the health. The past 3 months have been fun. Midnight, is female, sits on the top of the living room chair watching out the window. Friendly, lovable, meows for me to pet her; such a stress reliever. Leo, the male, is shy. He will spend most of his time downstairs. The cats are quiet, clean, low-maintenance for the life I live. The animal control personal were very professional. The animals were shown care. I appreciated the genuine attitude the building and staff showed. If interested in a pet give a sheltered animal a chance because animals adopted from shelters typically cost less than ones purchased or even acquired for free--once you add in the cost of vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, microchip, dewormer, and other "tide bits" included in your adoption fee, you'll probably be surprised what a bargain it is to have chosen an adopted pet. Most shelters and rescue groups conduct thorough behavioral analyses of each pet to get a better ideal that they will be the right piece for your family. Schererville Animal Control did this and told me if anything happens to please bring the pets back. I can not recommend to adopt a shelter animal anymore than buying from a pet store etc. Most pets end up homeless through no fault of their own--"moving" and "landlord issues" are the top reasons people give for relinquishing their pets, please check out your local shelter. It was definitely 100% worth it for my children and I.

Angela scheduled his vet/surgery appointment and we got him over there right after the weekend. We're still working through the introduction to our dog, but are hopeful that they'll be great siblings. :) I know that there are many animals that come through there, and all I have heard are good things about how Schererville AC takes care of the animals and how professional they are with everyone. Keep up the good work!

Adopted two kitties (they were sisters) from the humane society in early October of last year. Took…read moreboth of them to the vet the following week, and they were both diagnosed with feline leukemia virus (FeLV). I notified them to make sure the other kittens housed in the same area were checked out to make sure they also didn't have it. They told me they didn't test for feline leukemia because it was an expensive test and they were still too young (they were 4 months at the time) and to get them tested again in another 2 months, as the tests aren't accurate when they are still young is what the humane society told me. One of my kitties started suffering a few weeks after I had adopted her. Her eyes went bad, and she could not gain any weight no matter how much she ate. I took her to the vet and her white blood cell count was extremely high. Gave her some antibiotics and eye drops which helped the first time. They no longer helped her after the second time I took her to the vet. Within the last week she became very wobbly and was rapidly losing weight and there was nothing the vets could do seeing as there is no cure or medications to help manage FeLV. I unfortunately had to put my kitty to sleep this past Sunday morning. She was seizing uncontrollably and I had no other choice. Thought it was odd that they didn't test for such things. I know plenty of other shelters that do test for FeLV and FIV, and they even have signs on the crates of the cats/kittens that do. I love my kittens and would do it all over again. Just think that it's very unfair to not test for life threatening illnesses to inform future adopters of the time, care, money, and love they will have to put into a pet that will be sick. My other kitten is fairly healthy, but very sad that her sister is gone. Would absolutely think twice before adopting from here unfortunately. Losing my kitten was one of the toughest things I've had to deal with. And I believe they should test for illnesses like FeLV. will not be adopting from here again, and if you're thinking about it, I would look elsewhere.

This is also a conflicted review Im not sure what to rate so I gave 2 stars . The staff seemed…read morevery caring and concerned about the animals there mostly cats. Si=aid it was cat season??? They seemed under staffed. The smell was horrible I adopted a mixed breed dog. I think they really just went by how he looks now ,not sure if he is a pit mix(no DNA test) as stated. HIs mother looks like any ol lil mixed breed dog obviously not a pit or pit mixed(got to see her). Do they need money? Admittedly they dont know what the father is . I also heard a lot of under chatter so to speak. The young male said, " What happens when she finds out ------."Then the front desk person said," She will love him by then." This is why I asked do they need donations? Please y'all give donations . I drove a long way to get this dog originally saw it on Adopt A Pet. Got 2 other rescues from this site. They turned out fine, especially the first one who was actually looked like a Staffordshire mix. After I got the first dog, so well mannered house broken and trained I decided then (after the second one)all rescues are most definitely not created equal. I suppose they need donations. I must say the second turned out to have more fur than expected Hmm in hind site kinda looks like a similar breed to the mother of the pup i just got. Had a few issues/concerns with the health of this pup the front desk person was very accommodating, but too far of a drive back for me . I did have to spend $75.00 plus to take to my vet. And will get set of third pup shots on Monday. Again out of my pocket I must say the rescues did offer but that means I have to drive so far back there. Any who the pup I got is a little wild and very smart, he is adjusting well. Already knows the routine and will alert me if he has to go outside. Who knows what he will look like.. Im sure like his mom any ol lil mixed breed dog. Suggestions: make sure your part of the paperwork is completely filled out with a health statement etc. and make sure the pup is not released until all shots are given . Maybe he shouldn't have been on the site without these things. Or at least reduce the price for the needed remaining shots and not rescue pricing as it is much lower than real prices. If u cant afford this then......... I would think one is supposed to feel good after a rescue not taken advantage of. Rescues are not cheap of course cheaper than a breeder but due diligence is expected.

When I first walked in they told me I would have to submit an application to see the dogs, ok great…read moreno problem. We leave and my boyfriend (who is 19) submits the application and within like 20 minutes receives a call. *background: my boyfriend put me and my miniature dachshund down on the application because the dog would be around us a lot, not because we live with him* First we get told that he has to be 21 so the dog would have to be put under his dad's name, and they would have to call his dad to make sure it is ok. (He has no problem with this). I was in the store while my boyfriend took the call, and the lady he was talking to told him that no information was found for my dog. She was REAL snotty about this. (She is not under my name for the vet but my moms, she's just the one who paid for/set up the account for my dog because I was a minor when I got my dog). I had my boyfriend call back and tell them that my dogs name is not under any of the names on the application and the lady was once again rude. She called my boyfriend's dad, and asked like she said she would. My boyfriend's dad said yes of course and the lady replied with "okay.. I guess". *at some point during the call she informs my boyfriend that all the people in his household AND my dog would have to come in to meet the said dog to make sure everyone would get along. My dog does NOT do good in shelter/vet like environments. She does not do well with new people.* After she gets off the phone with my boyfriend's dad, she calls my boyfriend back and tells him that my mom would have to call my vet and allow them to release the medical information. I understand the application and them wanting to make sure all of their dogs go to a good home, but the attitude and the way that we were both treated, as LEGAL adults, is very disappointing.

Located on Evans in Valpo…read more This is an awesome place to go to adopt your next pet. They have a lot of dogs & get new ones in all the time. From mixes to pure breds, there is always someone in need of a good, loving home. If you're not looking to adopt right now, you can always volunteer. They need walkers, cleaners, and fosters. You can also donate much needed items. They keep a list on hand of the things they are in need of. Everyone is so nice & helpful. The dogs are well taken care of. The cages are clean. The dogs get walked and played with by the volunteers. They make sure that each dog has a meet & greet & is the right fit for their potential family.
