Loyola University Chicago School of Law

    Near North Side

Had a visit to Loyola University Chicago School of Law just off the Magnificent Mile on Chicago's…read morenear north side. Very nice building in which the School of Law uses about 8 floors...some of which have shared classrooms with other departments. Loyola Law is located on what Loyola University refers to as its Water Tower campus...called such because it is right behind the old Water Tower that survived the Chicago Fire of 1871. But the School of Law is much more modern...their facility of eight stories (build 1994) gives them tons of room. Many of the classrooms are laid out like traditional rectangles, others in the pie-wedge shape...all seem to have up-to-date technology keeping students plugged in. The lecture and seminar rooms were very nice and on the newish side. The moot courtroom and other specialty rooms were also very nice. It is obvious the School of Law is reinvesting in its property. Since this is a commuter school with a large part-time program, transportation is pretty much on your own. You can ride the Chicago buses or "L", driving and parking would be pretty tough. Loyola also provides a shuttle bus that takes you from its north side campus to the Water Tower campus. The law library takes up three floors...from 3 to 5. You enter on the 3rd, and have inside access to the other floors. There is no main reading room for the library, rather they have set up a line of carrels and tables and seating spaces around the three sides of each floor. This yields a lot of seating spread out around the library. The library has a few areas where they have set up some larger tables for students doing group work...there are also a number of private meeting rooms available. In other areas of the building are all the administration and faculty offices, along with the classrooms. They have a nice little diner on the lower level of the building but it was not open when we visited and is probably only operating when classes are in session. Loyola Chicago's School of Law is well-ranked in the second-50 tier of schools and the faculty is well regarded. Being so close to downtown Chicago they have the benefit of a lot of experienced lawyers coming in as adjuncts. We were out looking at law schools and stopped by for a visit...even though we showed up unannounced they had someone in the Admissions Office who provided us with a self-guided tour brochure...nice touch. It just showed a welcoming attitude, and a school that is not resting on its laurels. A good choice for a commuter law school in Chicago.

It's not your typically crazy competitive environment. It's actually the opposite where students support one another, share notes, and help foster each other's growth. The faculty also work very hard to get to know the students and invest in their future success. Grading on a curve, I would give Loyola University Chicago School of Law the CALI Award.

I have met some amazing people from this school and have had an array of professors, some who have changed my learning and life for the best and others who have given me ceaseless nightmares. I'll give a tiny rundown on UIC, although if you are seriously searching for colleges, I hope you consider looking beyond Yelp for pros/cons. Strengths: It's somewhat affordable. Have a great gym, wide array of student services including campus care, events, therapy, and a student center. Usually can get in touch with someone after multiple emails. Well known by employers. Accessible and proximate to downtown. They have a library. Building new dorms/updating some of the buildings. Weaknesses: Parking is very difficult unless you buy the monthly pass. Some of the buildings are outdated, although they are trying to update these. Some of the advisors are not so helpful. Side note: I did not review my specific program as this listing is for the campus/school itself.

This school has to be a joke and it's clearly not veteran-friendly. I submitted my application for…read morethe Ph.D. program in Computer Science for the Spring semester. I wasn't requesting any type of funding since my VA education benefits cover my tuition. My goal was simple: to enroll and continue my education. Out of nowhere, I received an email from a professor at 8 a.m., stating I needed to respond by 11 a.m. the same day regarding a potential RA position. Unfortunately, I didn't see the message in time and missed that last-minute deadline. Despite this, the professor mentioned he was still interested in hiring me and encouraged me to reach back out in August for the Fall term. Here's what doesn't make sense: because I missed a same-day response window for a funding opportunity I didn't even request, my entire application for Spring admission was declined and I was told to reapply in the Fall. As a veteran using my earned benefits, this feels completely unfair. I wasn't asking for a handout or financial assistance just the opportunity to pursue my education. If I had known their admissions process worked like this, I would've chosen another school months ago. Veterans deserve better.

The companies that I've worked for, always had DePaul alumni - several throughout leadership. I also have many family members and friends who've gone their for their undergrad or graduate level studies. Legal, business, and the Social Sciences - these are their strengths. Their other strength is the vast DePaul network, especially in the Chicagoland area. Their film school is also making itself known, year after year. Recently, they've tried to make it more affordable to attend the school, through various grants and scholarships. Also, they've done away with the SAT/ACT requirement - I really don't know how that's going to work? Lincoln Park is a great area to dorm and the women's basketball team is a perennial NCAA contender. It's quite pricey so choose your major wisely. Go Blue Demons!!
