Cross Mills Public Library is smaller than some of its sister libraries on the Ocean State Libraries network, but don't be fooled by the pastoral setting and diminutive size - this is actually the library with the nicest staff I've been to thus far on my journeys, and they also have lots of books I hadn't been able to find at my local library branch in Newport! The library is located in picturesque Charlestown, RI, right next to an old schoolhouse and a church that looks like it's from the 1800s. The library itself is very quaint, with many windows to let in lots of natural light, and plenty of seating to catch the rays on a sunny afternoon. We curled up with stacks of books today and wiled away the day reading. It was pretty perfect! In addition to the books, they also offer a robust selection of community programming and classes for all ages, including a cooking club, free concerts, and a Minecraft after school club for kids (we heard the squeals of excitement coming from the computer lab on the lower level - bless Tyler, the awesome librarian we met, for keeping the kids occupied and entertained as leader of the group!). We look forward to coming back for some of the concerts during the summer! They also have a great book sale every summer, so keep an eye out if you live in the area and want to get some new reading material for cheap! There is a small parking lot. I do suggest getting out of your car and going around to the top of the hill and take a look at the water. There are many other viewing opportunities to see Point Judith Light house. I highly recommend just taking a drive around after You venture to the coast guard area. The history behind this lighthouse is pretty neat. So many opportunities to photograph the lighthouse.

The house was restored to its colonial origins in the 1920's and is furnished in a manner consistent with the wealthy colonials. Our volunteer docent was descended from the Smiths and was extremely knowledgeable and proud of what they had achieved there. They have also established a granite museum that provides a brief history and a depiction of the granite harvesting and refinement process. We called for reservations and flexibility is key.

This town is a wonderful reminder of the old towns New England was once filled with. The center of the historic district is the monument at the intersection of High Streets and U.S. Rt. 1, just near the Westerly Library. There is on-street parking available throughout the area. This is the place to begin your visit by walking the streets, lined with one-off store fronts, small 'mom and pop' restaurants and beautiful old architecture. It really makes a fun morning adventure. Once you have satisfied your curiosity there, follow the river south along Main Street, to the Farmers Market near the intersection of Union Street. It runs June - October, 10am - 2pm on Thursdays. Check out the state's DEM website for updated info. After picking up some farm fresh foods for lunch or dinner, follow Union Street up the hill back toward Wilcox park and there is a nice brick tower on the left. I'm not sure what the building is used for today, but from the look of the stone foundation, it's quite an old edifice. Continue straight on, across the street into Wilcox Park for a nice stroll under trees. Maybe picnic on the food you purchased at the farmers market, enjoy the magnificent old trees or sit by the pond. There are signs around the park telling the history of the area. If you live in state, try to stop by throughout the year to see it in all it's seasons. If you are visiting the state, be sure to make it one of your stops while visiting the area. Lighthouses are on the coast, of course. And this one is on a small spit of land that juts out a bit into the Block Island Sound. There has been a lighthouse here since 1745 that goes back to the Rhode Island colonial government. The original structure was destroyed by a storm in 1781 and was replaced at least once. The current structure was completed in 1856. There is no vehicle access to the lighthouse other than those with handicapped placards. You'll need to find parking near Watch Hill Beach and walk down. There are also a number of interpretive signs that convey some of the history and current uses of the buildings. There are a number of war monuments and some cool sculptures. We especially enjoyed the sculpture "The Runaway Bunny" by Margaret Wise Brown. Love that the park was founded by a woman, Harriet Wilcox. Opposite the park, there is a nice mural with her image and apparently a quote by her "The People Shall Have Their Park". Respect. The park is open dawn to 9pm. Street parking.

It feels to me like I am in in a European park, with fountain, statues, and carefully sculpted ponds, with bench seating throughout. It's a large space with winding walking paths. Much nicer in the summer when everything is in full bloom but even in the winter or early spring on a sunny day it still has a lot to offer a nature buff like myself. You can park on the street for free and access the park at different points. Definitely worth a visit particularly in the warmer weather.

However, the Westerly PO manages to open and Charlestown does not, even when it says it is online. Mail delivery has been terrible for years and is worse now. It's often 5 days or more between mail deliveries. No truck goes by and no mail is picked up for days. Never mind the old PO motto "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds". I remember when mail was delivered to your door 2x a day. Now we're lucky if we get it at all and often it's someone else's mail delivered to my address. And if you ask a question, a snarky retort can be expected. The worst!

Every package that gets sent via USPS does not get delivered. I've tried calling to get it resolved. Each time, they swear the postmaster will get back to me. It's been 3 phone calls, 2 branch visits, and 3 weeks later, and the postmaster still has not called me. I've filled out the white card where I can designate where to leave packages. They seem to be ignoring that completely. Every time I call, they tell me that they can't deliver to my front door because they're a rural delivery service. Hm. Okay. Charlestown isn't the first "rural" town in which I've resided (and the other rural towns in which I've lived had no problem leaving packages at my door). Got another one? Oh, that's right. Then they say there's not enough space to turn the mail truck around. If I can turn a 23-foot U-Haul around at my place (which I did several times while moving in), I'm pretty sure a small postal carrier car can do the same. Today's excuse was the best: "Carrier is unable to gain access to front door to deliver the package." My God, I didn't know I was trapped in my own house! Thank goodness USPS tried to deliver a package and told me I can't get to my own front door! Nice excuse. My front door is perfectly accessible, thank you very much. Bottom line, zero customer service (literally zero.........nonexistent. they don't even contact you). The postmaster treats you like she's doing favors for you gratis; not like you're a customer who's paying her with your tax dollars. If I could have another mail service deliver all my post and parcels, I would.
