The vent pipe that will need to be redone because the pitch is not correct.
    Joe H.

When we bought our home four years ago, we knew we were going to have to put a decent amount of money into it to update and remodel it. We spent a huge chunk of money into the initial investment of remodeling by taking money out of our 401K. Now that this initial loan is paid off, we started to focus on the next phase of bigger expenses, which includes remodeling of two bathrooms and finishing a spare room. We called our electrician, who has done work in our home since we bought it and asked for a recommendation for someone to do our bathrooms. Our electrician is also a general contractor so he agreed to do the project. The first two days of the project started with the demo of the upstairs bath. No problems there and in fact, it took less time than I imagined it would take. The following day, Eric from Ericson's Remodeling and Drain Cleaning showed up to begin the plumbing. Now, keep in mind that this was an existing bathroom for over 50 years and the layout of the fixtures was essentially not changing. Within minutes of being there, Eric seemed bewildered and I felt uncomfortable with his puzzlement. But our GC showed up, the two of them talked and it seemed that all was good at that point. However, each day seemed to bring more "issues" for Eric. The plumbing seemed to be becoming complicated and extensive. There were pipes leaking, difficulty routing the pipes where they needed to be, a new exhaust pipe needed to be run through our roof, etc. Finally, a week later the work was complete. Or so we thought. Although the side of the truck for Ericson's shows the NJ license number, Eric, himself was not a licensed plumber. Here comes the good part. Because Eric isn't licensed, a licensed plumber has to come in behind him to inspect the work and literally sign off on the plumbing as if that licensed plumber did the work himself before the city inspector can come to say it is acceptable and that the walls can be closed up and the project can be completed. We've had two licensed plumbers come into our home in the past two weeks and neither of them is willing to sign off on the plumbing. Why? Because it's shoddy! For every connection that is made in plumbing, you have to be able to see the purple primer on the PVC. Of the dozen or so connections in our bathroom nearly half of them don't have primer showing. That alone will fail the inspection. Huge holes were created in our floor joists to accommodate the vent pipe that Eric installed. Come to find out, the pitch of the vent pipe is not up to code. Now, more/larger holes will need to be created in order for that pitch to be corrected. In doing that, we're weakening the joists and the support of the entire bathroom. The drain for the sink is also off pitch...well, that's not true...it's off level because there isn't supposed to be the pitch that Eric left us with. Because of the "extra work" Eric did, he charged us an additional $850. I paid it to him the day he left and it wasn't until he was long gone that we found out how crappy his work really was. This project started the second week of September and we were told that BOTH bathrooms would be completed in two weeks. Because of Eric's screw-ups, work has been at a complete standstill for over five weeks. Nothing has been done. Thankfully, this past week a plumber agreed to come in and finish the job and we should have our bathroom back in less than two weeks. I would never recommend using Ericson's Remodeling and Drain Cleaning.

Unless you want to be left with this mess, don't hire these losers!

Update..2-23-26...today Keven called me who, according to him has no experince in this field. Supposedly he was a coach prior to getting the job at Fantes. As the conversation was becoming heated. I replied, i am not angry but I am upset over the fact that I have left a message for approximately 2 weeks and no one has called me back. Then he yelled " I just got the message on the 17th and I called you back" I replied, so who is getting angry now". So as I was still talking and he was trying to speak over me. I hired Goodman Plumbing, which does HVAC as well, to install a high efficiency 97% Carrier gas…read morefurnace because of positive reviews. Goodman Plumbing did not take out a permit for the job, and refused to do so when I reminded them. "Stan" and office staff said Philadelphia did not require a permit for that job (it requires a Mechanical permit) and tried to pass off a private inspector as one connected to a city permit. I finally applied for a permit myself after the fact, listing Robert Goodman as the contractor. The application is pending. I have since learned that their installation might not pass an inspection. Goodman Plumbing used a one pipe installation (just exhaust) through a window into the rowhouse air-light space between the houses. It terminates underneath a window air conditioner. A 97% AFUE furnace is a Category IV condensing furnace, which is designed for sealed combustion. It works best when the furnace has two separate PVC pipes, one for outdoor combustion air and one that exhausts the low temperature flue gases. A one pipe setup pulls combustion air from inside the house, creating negative pressure, which then pulls cold outdoor air into the home through cracks and leaks. This can reduce overall system efficiency by 3-5%, partially defeating the point of a high efficiency furnace. A two pipe system avoids this by using outdoor air only, keeping the home's conditioned air inside. Also, when a furnace uses indoor air for combustion, fumes from cleaners, paints, laundry products, and stored can be drawn into the burner and corrode the heat exchanger over time. Philadelphia rowhouses can be too airtight for safe indoor air combustion. Exhaust fans, dryers, or range hoods can depressurize the home and cause backdrafting. A two pipe sealed system is unaffected by indoor pressure, ensuring stable combustion and preventing CO hazards. Codes and manufacturers specify two pipe direct venting as the standard for Category IV furnaces to ensure: Correct combustion, safe exhaust removal, and proper condensate management. Negative pressure can also draw water heater exhaust down the chimney into the house as well as through the window AC that is over the exhaust pipe. After the installation, I started getting headaches and my dog lost her appetite and started vomiting several times a day. I turned the furnace off. My headaches went away and my dog's appetite and health returned. A Goodman rep came out to the house with a meter but only found 1 ppm. The house had been aired out and the furnace turned off for a couple days before his visit. When I turned the furnace back on, my headaches came back and my dog got sick again. I spent over $150 on CO detectors to monitor the situation, then decided to turn the furnace off until installed correctly. Goodman Plumbing was a bad choice. Update: As of 4/23/2026, Nick, the manager, has offered to come out and correct the piping on Tuesday, but would not agree to file for a mechanical permit and inspection with the City of Philadelphia.
