With only two male shirts in the entire store, a nice employee showed me a shirt that would fit the stipulations of a prize. Went to register and the owner charged me $32 dollars for my "free" shirt. I purchased 2 saddle pads from Equus Now. When they arrived I began looking for a bonnet that would compliment them and found out they make a matching bonnet to the saddle pads. They had it listed on the Equus Now UK site. I contacted customer service and they told Me they would be happy to get the bonnets to me. This is a pretty typical fancy tack shop - not super fancy, but not the place I would go to just grab some bandages or a hoof pick. The staff was pleasant, although seemingly a little overstretched with organizing some kind of get-together, so service was a little slow. They seemed to have good quality items, including gifts, and I appreciate that they do consignment sales in the back. What great customer service! I ordered a helmet through Amazon, and thought I was getting the last in stock in my size. I got a voicemail from Colleen who told me there had been a mistake and they did not in fact have that last hat. She offered me an upgrade for the same money. When I phoned back to say yes, I decided to double check that I was ordering the correct size. Jen walked me through that process, and I found that I had guessed wrong. Quite simply, this saddlery rocks. I discovered them years before I moved to Columbus, when I used to order from them online. When I moved to Columbus, I was pleased to find that the brick-and-mortar experience is just as good as the online experience! If you're a hardcore horseperson, you know how shockingly rare this statement is: Equus Now is full of helpful and friendly employees who aren't pushy or intrusive, they stock products that you'd actually need and want in your barn, the prices are very fair/not hugely marked up compared to online vendors, the store is clean and well organized, and there's a big consignment/closeout section in the back. They also have sales all the time, so if you're not on their Facebook Page and their email list, get on it so you find out about the sales! They also have a good price matching policy and a decent saddle trade-in program. Let me put it this way: If I had a friend who was a noob to horses, and I needed to send them to a tack store to get outfitted for their first riding lesson, I feel like I could send them to Equus Now without being afraid that they'd get ripped off, upsold, or told to buy a bunch of crap they don't actually need. Similarly, as an experienced horseperson, I know I can call Equus Now with some super-specific and esoteric question, and they always humor me without batting an eyelash. You need someone to walk over to the fly spray section and read you the percentages of pyrethrin in three different fly sprays? They'll do it. You need someone to break out a tape measure and measure the sleeve length on that RJ Classics coat that's on sale? They'll do it. You have no idea which of these five breastplates might work best for your horse? They'll have that conversation with you. Although their inventory is particularly strong in hunter/jumper tack, as someone who mostly does dressage and eventing, I find the inventory works for my disciplines too. They also have a Western section (can't speak to the inventory in that department since I don't ride Western) and a pretty sizeable children's section. They also maintain a pretty decent selection of consignment saddles--not tons and tons of them, but maybe 15 or so used dressage saddles and 15 or so used hunt-seat saddles at any given time. I also appreciate that Equus Now is engaged with the local horse community. They have discount nights for the local IHSA teams, the Pony Clubs, etc. You see their trailer at many local shows, including shows that double as fundraisers. They keep not just one, but two big bulletin boards at the back of the store for local horsepeople to post flyers and ads. Rose, the owner, has a great memory and seems to know everybody in this area. I just wish this place was closer to my house! But it is nice to be able to order stuff I need online and go pick it up whenever I'm in that part of town, saves me the shipping $$ and time. Sometimes prices aren't as good as other online retailers, but a visit to the retail store completely explains it - the service is great. Plus you never know what you might find on the clearance/consignment racks! My favorite riding tights were gently used and only $10. I consigned a pair of boots and some other items last year and they are happy to just keep store credit on file, or give you the cash. I purchased a saddle from them earlier this year and Jen went out of her way to try to change the gullet in it for me this weekend, even though we thought it might not be possible after the brand changed the style. Didn't work out and we discussed how to change the shims in my ThinLine pad to hopefully help it fit better until I locate the discontinued gullet plates somewhere. I've been out of the game for a while and only got back into riding in 2013, and I never feel stupid when asking for help at Equus. I'm also happy that a percentage of my purchases goes to the horse-related charity of my choice. I'm glad to give up a 5% discount for that. read more
