Sylvan Tutoring Center is the worst tutoring center among the four I have enrolled my two kids in…read morefor past 6 years. Sylvan has the worst make-up policy and is overpriced. I thought I paid for one-hour lesson, but the teachers end the lesson 15 minutes earlier than the lesson schedule. The 15 minutes time period is the waiting time for students to get picked up. Sylvan also forfeit your lesson if you missed a lesson. that means they will charge you for the lesson your kid didn't attend. we as parents, already are stressed so much for our daily expenses, but when our kids need help on their homework and school assignments, we send our kids to tutoring. One of my younger kid's parent persuaded me to enroll my kid in Sylvan because she could get some referral lessons once I enrolled. We got the 500 hours package because the price is a bit less than regular price. There are regularly 2-4 kids per 45 minutes lesson. My kid don't get much actual help in one lesson because she needs to share lesson time with other kids. We still have some purchased lessons. I won't renew after all purchased lessons are used for sure and definitely won't refer any of my friends to Sylvan. Sylvan entices students for a prize or gift to ask their parents to write good reviews on the internet.

Kittredge is a small, established school located in a corner three-story house in a scenic…read moreneighborhood nearby Rochambeau Park. The tuition is comparatively attainable for an independent school with impressive academic outcomes (high school acceptances). The school has a strong athletic component with daily P.E. and students can participate in traditional school sports (cross country, volleyball, futsal, etc.) or after-school electives (theater, science club, fencing, etc.). A year ago, my child joined Kittredge in 6th grade from SFUSD. We were looking for an environment where students are interested in learning and support each other. Going in, my main concerns were how my kid would adjust to a much smaller school with rigorous academic expectations in math, science, and composition, and whether my child would fit in quickly with others who have been at Kittredge for years. It took my child about one quarter to adjust to the high academic standards, and the transition was a lot easier due to the nurturing environment. At the start of school, students were thoughtfully provided with calendar planners and shown how to schedule due dates. The students have group projects such as a bridge construction challenge and presentations as well as individual assignments like making an everyday invention and writing a history thesis. In 7th grade, students will be matched to multiple levels of math classes. My child made friends with classmates in the same year and across different grades. His cohort is an even mix of kids who joined from SFUSD and other private schools over the years or who attended the school since kinder. Kittridge is not only about academics. The school holds an annual talent show, school dance, and field day. The students attend field trips and hike to the beach and Land's End, and 7th/8th graders attend camp in Yosemite. The dedicated parent association also enlivens the environment with parties, picnics, lion dances, Diwali celebrations, etc.

We could not be happier with Kittredge, a truly special home away from home. It has been amazing to…read moresee our son thrive after transitioning from a larger school to a small family-like atmosphere. Individualized approach - Kittredge is designed as a small community to meet each child's specific needs and empower each child to flourish. Whether a student is struggling or wants to be challenged in a particular area, not only does Kittredge differentiate learning for varying skills levels, teachers customize their approach to support each individual. This applies not only for academics, but also social emotional issues. I was impressed that our teacher was open to incorporating behavior strategies that work well at home. Small knit community - The faculty often wear multiple hats and get to know the students well from different contexts. For example, the reading teacher assistant can also be the extended care teacher. By interacting with the students in different settings, they gain various perspectives and find approaches that resonate. It is valuable that students of all ages have the chance to interact closely and learn from each other. In his mixed age class, the teacher told me that my son acts as big brother, proudly explaining math concepts to the younger kids. After hearing the 8th grade student council election speeches, voting, and discussing school issues, my young son is now inspired to run for student council president one day. Personal attention -The extended care teachers are not merely babysitters ensuring his safety. I am impressed that they are loving and actively engaged whether it's playing hangman, chess, or board games. It is no wonder he does not want to leave even after a long day! When my child transferred to Kittredge, I was quite nervous for him in his new environment. On his first day of school, the principal arrived at school on a hectic morning and from a distance I saw that she made the effort to stop, and kneel down to his eye level to give him a warm welcome. These small gestures of kindness make a big impact. I appreciate that Kittredge focuses on the development of the whole person - academically, socially, and emotionally. Their curriculum includes teaching "Habits of Mind", cognitive skills which foster personal success. Every month, the theme is integrated through stories, discussions, and projects. I was filled with pride when my young son taught me "When you fail, you just try again". Once a child has a healthy mindset, and feels seen and heard, I believe he or she is set up for academic success. It is not a surprise that Kittredge graduates get accepted into San Francisco's top high schools. I met a lady who has worked in pediatrics in San Francisco for many years. When I mentioned that my son attends Kittredge, her eyes widened with excitement, "Ooooh that is a good school! All the kids I've met there are well rounded!" We feel extremely fortunate to have found a gem at Kittredge - a well balanced, warm and nurturing environment with solid academics.

I love that the…read morecenter director has a systematic way planned out to focus on different writing types, one at a time, then to debate, then to publish their own story, then to college essay writing. They do group different grades of students together in a class, but it doesn't matter because students are of the same level. When my two daughters started, there were older kids in their classes but they didn't need to catch up ever. My younger daughter is now in 10th grade and she just finished the presidential debate project recently. My older one is now a college freshman in a university across the nation. She's a Posse Scholar with full tuition covered for all 4 years. She's also accepted to the UCs she applied including UCLA, UCB, UCSD, UCI. Writing has never been a struggle for her and I'd give credit to UpGrade for giving her a strong foundation!

I really wanted to like this learning center. The staffs/tutors there are very respectful, helpful,…read moreand friendly to the small children. They are mostly high school students. My kid really liked Shu Lin, but as a parent and our need for learning center is education. Reading & Math Subjects: are from an App that has reward points and your child can use that points to play game. You can purchase it at home. Most parents want the Writing subject, but they NEED to sign up for Reading & Math in order to sign up the Writing. For my 3rd grader, I felt this is fine because he has much to learn. It should be an option for student with strong Reading and Math skill. Writing class: 2hrs long with a small break. She's teaching grammars, definitions, descriptive words, sentence structures, and above all those, taking note (I really love this about the class). My biggest drawback: She has too many students in one class, all from different grade levels. 5th graders+ have much faster to learn concepts and this unfair to them or maybe unfair to 3rd graders. My 2nd biggest drawback: there is no feedbacks for their writing assignments. Feedback is most important for kids to learn. Overall I feel that she just jams all students in one writing to collect money. She obviously can divide the class base on their grade/age level throughout the week. I really hope Shu Lin can improve on these: feedbacks, class base on their grade/age, and give option to students base on their assessment test (also because she's teaching grammar in her writing class). As a parent, what degree you hold doesn't matter as long as you can teach with humble and kindness.

We couldn't have asked for a better SAT tutor for our son Taylor than Josh Lim. Josh has a strong…read moreengineering background, just like Taylor, so they clicked from the very first session. Josh understood how Taylor thinks and knew how to explain concepts in a way that made sense to him. Josh's guidance made a difference even before tutoring started. I had assumed the ACT would be the better fit, but Josh assessed Taylor's strengths and quickly helped us see that the SAT made more sense. Taylor is very strong in math and needed more support in reading and writing. That one piece of advice set us on the right path. Over just 10 weeks, Josh helped Taylor raise his score by several hundred points. He pushed Taylor's already-strong math even higher and, more impressively, helped him make real, measurable progress in reading and writing, the area where he'd struggled most. Taylor scored 1290 on his first official SAT in August and 1320 in September, and he's heading into his third attempt feeling confident and well prepared. Josh is patient, knowledgeable, and strategic, and he genuinely cares about his students' success. If your teen is preparing for the SAT or ACT, especially a STEM-minded student, I can't recommend Josh and AJ Tutoring highly enough.
