That is my story with Dr. Philip Meltzer of Spectacles in Great Neck, NY. You might think this is an exaggeration on my part. Read on and judge for yourself. I think you will find yourself agreeing with me. I was not a customer of Dr. Meltzer when I called him. Originally I called him looking for an eyeglass frame that I already owned that cost me $700 when I bought it 6 months ago. I love the frame. Best looking frame I ever purchased. Unfortunately, while pulling a sweatshirt over my head, it got damaged. I returned to the vendor in Manhattan who I bought the frames from and he lead me to believe (against my gut instinct) that the frame was beyond repair and I needed to purchase a new frame even though it is no longer available in the color that I purchased it in. IF I was going to go that route I certainly was not going to buy another frame from a vendor who was highly belligerent to me. Seeking help from another source I used the company's website to locate another vendor of these French frames. I found Spectacles listed as a premium partner and decided I had nothing to lose by trying to see if another vendor carried my frames in any color. At this point I was literally trying to savage my lenses which cost appropriately $2,000. So in essence I was trying to save myself $2,700 that I spent approximately 6 months ago. I spoke with Dr. Meltzer on the phone after I had returned from the dropping off my frames in Manhattan at the original vendor. I bought the frames from him and had my prescription for my lenses filled by a professional I have known for around 25 years. An hour after dropping off my eyeglasses I received a distressing call from the Manhattan vendor basically telling me the only solution was for me to purchase another frame from him for an additional $700 and that I would have to do it at my own risk and that he could not promise that he would not damage my prescription lenses in the process of trying to remove them from the frame. That was totally out of the question. Luckily despite the heavy feeling in my stomach, I went to see Dr. Meltzer today and after examining the frame briefly he began to work on it and literally in less than 2 minutes fixed my beloved frame and saved me $2,700. He then apologized that it took so long. He also reused to accept any payment for his work. I think that this story tells you the kind of person and professional that Dr. Meltzer is. I for one can tell you that when I am in the market for another pair of frames I know exactly where I will be heading. The whole team is so friendly, helpful, caring, welcoming and incredibly kindhearted. We couldn't have asked for a better experience. Dr. Leung was very knowledgeable and didn't rush the exam, all my prior optometrists always speed-ran the lens portion by flipping the lens back and forth like a coin without allowing my eyes to focus and then berating me with the "this or that" question. He was the first optometrist who asked "Would this lens appear a bit sharper than the other or does this appear less?" He was very thorough and answered every concern/question I had, esp whenever I couldn't make out the last line, no judgment. Joy was a delight and had helped with my pre-tests as well as finding me a pair of glasses. Never once pressured into pricing options/lenses/frames but was open to an answer and did offer a genius solution on deciding between two pairs of glasses. I guess you'll have to go in to find out!! They do require a retinal scan which I always advocate for since it gives you/them clear results of how healthy your retinas are. They were always upfront with the cost and I genuinely felt like they cared about my wants/needs in a solid frame/lens package, and was never pressured into frames or upsold unless I specifically asked (blue light/antiglare/compression). (it was my insurance renewal in Jan which I would be eligible for another pair). Also, kid friendly!

Even though I had dealt directly with the insurance company, they still needed paperwork from the Doctor. Many times, Doctors must request a prior authorization. The office staff seemed to Discard the urgency of my medication needs. Ultimately, the physicians' staff contacted The Incorrect insurance company. I found this unbelievable and upsetting. I believe that Eye & I is a company that did not feel obligated to assure me of my necessary medication. I feel extremely uncomfortable with the way that I was treated. In addition, the office staff - Esther, was extremely rude, curt , abrupt, and unprofessional. She was Very Nasty. I believe they did not want my business because I am Black American. She should not be allowed to deal with customers. I will put in further complaints with New York State. No one should have to deal with this unprofessional behavior. As a regular patron…read moreof the Americana, Manhasset, I made the mistake of choosing Morgenthal Frederics "MF", one of the boutiques at the shopping center, to make the lenses for my vintage Cartier sunglasses. After waiting several weeks for my sunglasses to be ready, I picked them up. When I first saw the completed frames I was unsure if I liked the lenses that "MF" made for them. Once home I realized that I detested the lens color and and degree of tint. So, earlier today, four days after I picked up my frames, I sent my husband to the boutique to see what can be done regarding my dissatisfaction with the finished product. After my husband explained all of the reasons for my dissatisfaction, the sales representative, a dark haired woman wearing black eyeglass frames, basically said "screw you," albeit in a very polite, Manhasset, way. Specifically, it was explained that if I wasn't happy, my only recourse was to start from scratch and pay the full price for another pair of lenses. That, although I wasn't happy with my purchase, MF would do nothing except offer a slight discount on the next pair of lenses. Is this what we pay a premium price, for a premium service for? It's always a good sign when you call and can get a hold of a live person over the phone. That was the first draw in. When our appointment came up, we were greeted by friendly staff. The store is bright and inviting, but smaller than the last eyeglass supply store (a larger chain) we'd gone to. The selection of eyeglasses are limited to pricier designer frames, but upon inquiring, I was told that they have affordable (read: frames covered by insurance) available upon request, it just hasn't been put up on display yet. Plus, it was nice to see there were some refreshments and a clean bathroom available while we waited. Most importantly, this store was CLEAN-- there ample hand-sani at the ready, plus signs they clean their display frames between customers. Once the initial paperwork was done, the rest of our service was expedient. We were taken to a room for pre-testing, and then soon after met with the doctor. He answered all our questions, and never pressured us into buying lenses/frames. While this is a smaller store, the doctor has another office in NJ where he can check his inventory should there be something specific you want. Hope this location does well, it's good to have options other than large chain optical stores.
