I think it's pretty safe to say it's a one of a kind (if not the only) non-profit organization / facility that allows you to drop off your child(ren) with special needs, for a day or two on the weekend to allow the parents some time of respite. Absolutely love their mission and the fact that they care specifically for an otherwise marginalized population. They have three "lodges" each with 10 rooms (half singles, half doubles), outdoor playground, pool, indoor gymnasium, chapel, a variety of rooms for computers, music, arts & crafts, sensory stimulation and quite rooms. And practically everything has a theme. It really does look like a kids' paradise...and hopefully it will be. You'll need to register on their website to utilize their services.

From the carefully thought-out interior decor to the doting, compassionate staff, Jill's House is one of the most tangible manifestations of love for a group of children often overlooked by the general public. Jill's House is an overnight respite home for special-needs children. For the kids, it's like a fun sleepover - there's a music room with musical instruments, sing-a-long DVDs, and space to dance, a technology room with touch-screen computers, an art room, a gym, an indoor pool, a playground, and nature-themed "pods" with more games, puzzles, toys, video games, and even a movie screen (tell me you didn't have to take a breath in between reading that list). For the hard-working parents (for whom I have such great respect and admiration), it's a chance for them to have a night to themselves. Furthermore, Jill's House is an incredibly safe place for these children. The intake coordinators are very detailed in recording each individual child's diet restrictions, medical concerns, and methods of communication. They also make sure to give the parents (and the child) a tour of the facility beforehand. The intake coordinators, then, propagate all of this information to the staff who work directly with the children. Now, the staff are a group of people who are not only efficient caretakers, but are also genuinely loving people. It's apparent that the children quickly form bonds with the staff and recognize them when they return. It's heartwarming to witness. I could go on and on, but (as another review has pointed out) it might be easier to just visit the website or call. Ultimately, this facility houses an amazing group of workers and a precious group of kids.

No indication of any problems. A few days later we were rejected, no explanation given. The pup went to another family, which is fine. Maybe the other family was more of what they wanted. But when I asked what we could do better going forward, I got no response. Nothing. I waited. Asked about another dog or fostering. Again, no reply. Very frustrating. I've had dogs my whole life so I'm experienced. I just can't imagine what went wrong and it is very unfair to not have a conversation about it. Made us feel awful, too. We met every criteria they required and have given exemplary care to our 14-year-old dog, and Mutt Love still treated us like we were going to abuse an adoptive dog. This was after weeks and weeks of us emailing and completing all the paperwork, and asking for them to schedule a home visit and call our vet. I feel bad for the volunteers who spend hours trying to get these sweet dogs out of the kennel and into loving homes. Mutt Love doesn't care about its volunteers, nor the dogs. My family's offense that moved the person screening us to decide against us: my husband used to let our dog off leash when we were hiking in the woods. There's a number of large rooms if you want to host a conference or a community fair. There's also a bunch of classes you can sign up for, for a fee. (Vienna residents pay less.) I also like how close this place is to the center of Vienna. You could ride your bike here since the bike trail passes right by it. You could walk here right after going to the library. You could grab lunch and then walk over. You could hop over while your kid is playing baseball. In fact, car is probably the most annoying way to get here since the parking can be a pain, especially if you come during the Saturday morning farmers market when part of the parking lot is closed.

I like the statue of kids reading. There are some nice benches as well. When my son was younger, took him here for a music and puppet show. That was fun and the arts thrive here. Definitely a nice community center, although I wish they could add a few activities.

We were greeted by 3 staff members (apologies I don't remember their names). I initially thought this was just a venue to smash stuff but it was explained that this is a mental health venture aimed at spiritual healing. After signing the waivers and donning our PPE, we went in. The wooden structure isn't huge so you cant get running starts or make any long over hear arm movements, but it ended being just the right amount of space to get your smash on. Initially I was caught up in the novelty of smashing things, but a point in time came where that novelty faded and I found myself tapping into an aggression and emotion I did not go there with. It wasn't until I stood there out of breath with my hands sore that I truly understood what this place was for. That session provided a space and avenue for me to truly let go, for just a little bit. If you haven't done that recently (or ever), you need to book a session to understand what im talking about. A challenge was issued to me to put in work on the water heater and I made a decent hole in it but that thing was tough. They sure don't make em like they used to.

The site was well furnished with safety gear (goggles, gloves, etc.), tools (bats, sledgehammers, etc.) and objects to smash (microwave oven, water heater, glass bottles, etc.). It was stress relieving and fun with the opportunity to damage and destroy inanimate objects in a normally civilized world. I definitely recommend if in the DMV area.
