Derek was amazing. My dad and I both came in to get tattoos, and he made the whole quick for both of us. I got two pieces--handwritten text on the outer sides of my left wrist--and I couldn't be happier with how they turned out. Derek was super friendly, conversational, honest, and helpful the entire time. He was patient, explained everything clearly, and made sure we felt comfortable throughout. The studio was clean and simple, with each artist's personality reflected in their space. We felt totally safe and welcomed--everyone we interacted with was kind and professional. Booking was super straightforward--we just called in, and they easily accommodated both of us in the same visit. Derek also went over aftercare really thoroughly. Both of my tattoos turned out phenomenal--it looks like my dad just wrote on my arm. I will be returning to Derek for any future tats. Easy to schedule appointment. Did it all through text! Got started on the process right when I walked in the door. Receptionist was friendly. Met my artist, Derek, who was super chill. They even added a little more to my piece and I think it turned out beautifully. Not a ton of conversation but honestly I kind of prefer that myself. My piece was also extremely detailed so I appreciated the focus on his part. I can't tell you enough how much I adore my piece. It turned out SO well. His lines are incredible and the way he was able to make everything look so well put together. It was a big one so it took about 3.5 hours with a couple breaks in between. This dude is a champ. Price was also very fair. I was happy with everything here. The experience was great and I felt very at ease. I got my first tattoo at Envy in 2015 right after I turned 18. It was from Biz (he is since long gone - he's at Evolved Body Art now). Biz was an absolute disgrace to the tattoo game and I refused to return to Envy for the longest time due to this experience. WHAT A MISTAKE. I have since opted to give Envy a second chance and I could not be any happier. The staff are friendly, the environment/atmosphere is such a positive and energized one, and my artist, Jamie, is the best in the world. I absolutely love coming here and being a regular customer. I absolutely love this place. Billy has everything together and it feels safe and clean. Two friends and I all scheduled tattoos around the same time and they were incredibly accommodating. One friend worked with Dart and couldn't stop raving about how much she loves both Dart and her tattoo. My other friend and I worked with Derek. He is absolutely fabulous, made sure I was comfortable throughout the entire process, and completely free handed the tattoo. I got lavender on my hand and my friend started her sleeve. For my 18th birthday my mom and I decided to get matching tattoos. While we sat in the waiting room the owner made degrading and sexual comments to my mother and the artist openly we're drinking in the shop.. in the middle of the day. My artist was great, I would give him 5 stars, the lines of the tattoo have since blown out a little but that could be due to my thin skin. I went back for my second tattoo, this time I had a different artist. I wanted a small tattoo on my wrist and my artist then told me It wasn't possible to get the tattoo as small as I wanted, which was disappointed but I went forward with it anyway. My tattoo is bigger than I wanted and the line work is sloppy. I definitely wouldn't go back. I have since gotten more tattoos from other shops and the work is amazing.. I wish my other tattoos were as quality as my others read more

She did not take the time to understand what I wanted and then was frustrated when I had her make several changes such as size and thickness. My favorite tattoo shop in Columbus! Super clean and Covid safety-conscious (much appreciated). I've had two sessions in one month and my third is coming up to complete my Vikings piece. Matt Mullens is my artist and he's amazing. I originally went in with an idea which he executed perfectly. I went back to add something else to the piece, which he also did perfectly. But then he recommended something additional which was bigger than I initially planned but I decided to trust his creative instinct, and I'm so glad I did. Matt took my concept to the next level and now I can't wait for session 3! Everyone I encountered there has been wonderful, from Nikki at the front desk texting back and forth with me ahead of time to Matt, who is as nice as he is talented. My BFF is getting her very first tat today and booked her appointment here with Matt, on my recommendation, because I felt confident he'll put her at ease and will bring her own tattoo vision perfectly to life. Whether you've already got ink or are a first timer, I highly recommend this place. Also when it comes to tattoos, you get what you pay for and Skin Envy charges appropriately for high quality work without price gouging. Last but not least, the work Matt has done so far has barely weeped or scabbed at all, very little itching either, especially compared to work I've had done elsewhere. Two part review! Part one: The Tattoo. I walked into Skin Envy with 3 friends to get small tattoos on a Saturday Afternoon. The place was clean, a little scattered as we filled out forms and were passed from the desk person to an apprentice to the artist, but overall, happy and positive. I thought we'd have to wait but we got right in! Our artist, Gumby, was fun. Nice, funny, made us laugh, did great work. This is my 5th tattoo and I adore it. He did amazing. FIVE STARS TO GUMBY. Part two: The Owner. Everything was going great, until the owner showed up, busts into the room during our tattoo and started yelling at our artist. Apparently only two guests in a room at a time, and while there were only two in our room, our two friends were in the hallway cheering us on. That is a no-no to the owner apparently, so he began yelling at our artist and announcing he now had to pay him a $50 fine. "I just love free money!" It's fine to have rules, truly. It not fine to lose your shit in front of customers. The best part is that I was Facebook Live'ing the entire experience to my 26k friends and the whole painful thing was caught on video. Which the owner apparently began to realize as I held my camera in my hand, jaw open, shocked that anyone would start yelling while someone was physically tattooing another human being. He just jumped up on the counter in our tattoo room and ribbed the heck out of our artist over and over. It was painfully awkward and honestly, we'll never go back. And it's all because of the owner. Which is shame for all the amazing artists there, including Gumby, who was awesome. read more

I've waited a long time for my tattoo from Billy Hill, owner of Envy Skin Gallery. And like anything good in life, the beautiful rocket on my back was totally worth the wait (how long has it been? Three years?). We've been talking about him doing work on me forevs, and never quite gotten around to it (although we have gotten around to many instances of consuming adult beverages and whatnot in the meanwhile, of course). Wellllll now I can finally write a well-deserved stellar review. I've changed my mind about 97 times about what I want Billy to do on me... at one point I was looking for examples of Cyrillic script, which derailed the whole process for a while, but it became apparent that what needed to happen was basically just freestyling. I went to BH with a quickly drawn sketch the boy had done on a napkin, to show the perspective of the rocket that I wanted. Billy literally just drew directly on my back for about ten minutes, and came up with something quite amazing. No carbon paper, no waiting around while he painstakingly drew something original... no, Billy Hill is the most professional, efficient artist I have ever encountered. Direct to skin sketch and rocket/flames color tattoo (which stretches all the way across my shoulders) took under two hours and is very high quality original art work. I was pretty much dumbfounded. I'll post a picture when it stops peeling (eww). It should be noted that Billy Hill studied in Japan, Europe, and all over this crazy country - he is extremely well traveled and well taught. His studio has a vaguely Japanese aesthetic and is incredibly clean, with a calming color of green on the walls. Billy himself is hilarious, crazy, and ultimately geniune and down to earth - a completely amazing guy. He and his West Virginia accent had me in stitches, as usual, the whole time he was tattooing me. Even more awesomely, BH has a collection of YouTube videos about tattooing and about his exploits... just look up IAmBillyHill on youtube, or go to his website iambillyhill.com. He also has an iphone app. Just saying. I highly recommend checking out Billy Hill and the other talented artists at Envy Skin Gallery. This was a pretty mind-bending experience. :D read more

I made an account here on Yelp just so I could review my experience with Envy Skin Gallery, which means my review is probably going to end up in the "not recommended" section. But please, if you've decided to read it anyway, learn from my mistake and don't go here to get a tattoo. I decided to get my tattoo done here because of how much difficulty I was having finding an artist who was able and willing to tattoo over scars. Billy Hill, who works at Envy, was willing to do so, and assured me over and over that the scars wouldn't impact his ability to produce a good-quality tattoo. It turns out that's because he wasn't able to produce a good-quality tattoo period. I suppose if I weren't such a noob to getting tattooed, I would have recognized the danger signs. Number one: the fact that Billy told me I had no choice but to get a tattoo that was considerably larger than what I actually wanted because it was "impossible" to do quality needlework at such a small scale if he made the design any smaller. Number two: the fact that the sketch he did on paper looked sloppy and uneven in places. But hey; it's just the rough draft, right? It's going to look better when it's on my skin, right? Wrong. The snowflakes I got tattooed on my hip look cartoonish and clumsily drawn, as if they're something I sketched on myself with a Sharpie. Worse still, the lines of the tattoo have blown out terribly. I've read this is more likely to happen if you get a tattoo over scar tissue, but the thing is, most of the blowout occurred in an area that wasn't even scarred. So that's definitive proof that, however many years of experience Billy has in the tattoo trade, he hasn't honed his technique very well at all. To cap it all, the employees at Envy are some of the most foul-mouthed, unprofessional-acting people I've ever encountered. Honestly, you'd be likely to hear more polite, intelligent conversation at a frat party. The worst of it was, as I was lying in the chair, tears streaming down my face and screaming into a towel I'd stuffed into my mouth, one of the other employees walks into the room just to say how much my screams of pain turn him on. So not only do I go through the worst pain I've ever experienced in my life and get a lousy tattoo out of it, but I get sexually objectified on top of it all. Wow. It's experiences like this which make me contemplate getting a tattoo that says "people = sh*t". Speaking of the pain, Billy seems to have no idea how to deal with people who don't have a high tolerance for the pain of the tattoo process. His attitude towards my pain was very patronizing; in fact, he acted as if he thought I was making up how much it hurt. The one bright side to this is that my reaction unnerved him so much that he refused to color in the tattoo in the same session that he inked the lines. Which means I'll have a better chance of getting this mess revised and colored in nicely by a competent artist. So please, do yourself a favor and go to a tattoo place where you'll be satisfied with the work, where the employees are professional, and where they'll give you what you really want without hiding behind the excuse of "it can't be done". read more

The owner, Billy, did my tattoo in January after the death of my unborn baby. I wanted a tattoo of the baby's name and prints on my wrist. It was my first tattoo and I was nervous, but I wanted something to honor the baby's memory. I felt that the tattoo artist did very little to make me feel comfortable or to allow me to make sure I was comfortable with the design. I have been tattooed twice by BH. 1st was good. Had him add on to it. He put no effort into it, not even looking at the original until the day of my 2nd appointment. He just half ass drew on me with a marker and traced over that. Finally got his effortless work fixed by another artist. His half ass add-on ruined the original tat he did. The place is clean for sure. If you can get passed the owner constantly talking about himself, swearing, being interrupted by employees, and the owner constantly yelling at employees, and WAY over paying for average work, then this place is for you. I've discovered another shop where I have had 12 hours of work done for 30% less an hour, cleaner lines, peaceful atmosphere, enjoyable conversation. Don't get caught up in this over hyped shop perpetuated by an obnoxious owner who thinks he should be on tv. Not worth it. Place is clean though. read more
