We recently moved to Santa Monica on a house that is on a rather large lot on the corner, with parkways all around the house measuring over 200 feet, as well as sprinkler irrigation on pretty much every inch of the property. We were shocked when our first water bill was nearly $1000. We talked to the city who sent an inspector and told us that we could qualify for a substantial rebate if we converted the grass to drought tolerant landscaping including drip lines, and converted all of the non-grass areas, which were substantial, from sprinkler to Dripp. They gave us a lengthy package of requirements that were pretty complex and technical. I work from home, so it was easy for me to get estimates from 12 different companies who all had five star reviews on yelp. After having all of them come out, I felt that Mario, even though he wasn't the absolute cheapest but was close to it, would be the best person to do the job. He would always call me amigo, not because he was trying to be polite or burn a customer but rather because he really truly became my friend and partner throughout this process. Mario's plans were thorough and confident. Budget was reasonable and in a detailed written quote. No surprises or bait and switch. Got the job done on time and each time the crew was here they left it far cleaner than when they arrived (tough because we love under a dozen pine trees!). The city inspector came and same soMe of the work had failed inspection -- drip lines needed to be a different brand, new valves were needed, and drip lines needed to be buried. Mario immediately did that work with no labor charge and minimal material charge for things we hadn't budgeted on initially. Again the work was beautiful. A couple issues with the drip line which Mario personally and IMMEDIATELY (even on weekends or late at night) came to fix. Courteously, respecting social distancing, and professionally. He even repaired some of our prior drip lines free to be nice. If you want drought resistant plants or drip irrigation or a complete redo, talk to Mario. Be prepared to be partners - share photos, be explicit, and he will give you exactly what you need and stand behind his work. His team is very sweet as well. I hired Mario because I wanted drought tolerance landscaping. What I got instead was the worse looking yard on the block. Mario was unable to draw up a plan, instead telling me his vision. He gave me an estimate & paid him a down. He presents himself as a humble, soft spoken man. Do not let him fool you! He does not follow through with his guarantees. He does not respond to text regarding problems. He doesn't even know the names of the plants he bought. Shortcuts all the way. He uses the cheapest materials. Disabled my sprinklers that were working fine. Will not come back to fix it. I have weeds popping up everywhere. The weeds are growing and the plants are dying. He took advantage of me. I am a senior woman with a disabled husband. He saw that as an opportunity to take advantage. After my first initial contact, Mario came out in a timely manner. He was pleasant and professional. On their originally scheduled date, Mario's two workmen arrived on time. With further inspection, they determined one of our main sprinkler valves needed replacing which I thought fairly added to the original estimate. I did not give five stars because a few weeks post our sprinkler system repair, a sprinkler broke. Due to unforeseen circumstances from Mario's workmen, I had to wait five days until Mario himself did the repair.
